I love an amuse-bouche as much as the next foodie. I love tapas & small plate menus too. But, I don’t understand the tiny food trends I am seeing. The videos of tiny food being made on tiny appliances? I am clearly missing something. I cannot find a point to the concept of tiny food except for the cute factor. Where food is concerned, more is almost inevitably better in my house. But there is a time & place for everything. This next Call is the perfect way to dive into tiny works. MEDIA: Hand-made books no larger than 3″ square. Content is up to the artist, these books do not have to be “How to” titles, but certainly can be if you’d like!

Remember having “eyes bigger than your stomach”? That was the automatic response to an overly large-portioned plate at my childhood dinner table. It was then immediately followed by a lecture reminding me of children thought to be starving in a far away country that seemed, well, other worldly to a five year old. The truth would have been more effective. There were starving children in my own country, my own state, my own town, probably my own neighborhood. I was fortunate not to want for food as a child. But today, my eyes are always bigger than my stomach. I always take on more than I can easily digest, gastronomically and otherwise, and yet I always find myself both hungry to pile on more–even while suffering the indigestion of my last turn at the proverbial table. Here at AAAD, we believed that the food metaphor is a perfect vehicle to inspire you to feed your creative self. We shun the demeaning cutesy-ness of the bohemian “starving artist” image as it numbs us to the real struggle of hunger & starvation worldwide. Starvation, in a literal way, robs humanity of being human and ends even the possibility of a creative self. For SMALL PLATES, AAAD wants your views on hunger —physical, spiritual, political, emotional and/or creative. Food references are optional.

The SMALL PLATES will be exhibit will both open & close on May 6, 2016 as a part of the First Friday festivities at The Balcony Gallery, located in The Emporium Center in Knoxville, TN –a one-day show.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists —any age, any gender, any location.

THEME: Hunger—physical, spiritual, political, emotional or creative. Food reference optional.

MEDIA: Open to all media that will fit in a 9”x12” envelope (aka 229 mm x 305 mm or No. 10 ½), including but not limited to: painting, drawing, fiber, collage, digital, photography, graphic design, illustration, pen and ink, printmaking, etc.

DEADLINE: April 18, 2016

NOTIFICATION: Ongoing by April 19, 2016

ENTRY FEE: $5 for up to 5. Entry fee waived for members in good standing of The Haggus Society.

CURATOR: R.L. Gibson (yours truly), a working artist, also serves as the editor of artandartdeadlines.com (AAAD). Trained in classical, French culinary techniques, Gibson created AAAD as a food-themed resource to motivate artists to create their own community, standards & artistic opportunities. In addition to producing her own solo & collaborative art, Gibson has served as a gallerist, juror, teacher & arts administrator for nearly two decades.

AWARDS: To assist resume building, designations of Best of Show, 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place will be awarded; however, cash prizes will NOT be awarded. Award designations will be chosen from the physical work and will be judged based on artistic merit and interpretation of the theme. If not chosen for the gallery exhibit, please note that at the curator’s discretion, ONE image from EVERY artist will go into the online exhibit* with a link to the artist’s website. *Editor’s note: So if you follow all the rules, you can at the very least add the online exhibit to your resume, even if you are not selected for the physical exhibit.

SALES: All work will be considered for sale unless marked NFS. A commission of 30% will be taken on all sales. Please note, 20% commission on cash/check sales and 25% commission on credit card sales is held by Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville. The additional 5-10% commission is retained by AAAD. Unsold artwork will be returned and payment for sold artwork will be made within 30 days of the close of the exhibit.

As many of you know, galleries spend thousands of dollars purchasing booths and individual artists are not allowed to participate without gallery representation. This year, up to 5 lucky artists will join our stable to be represented by SWG. Entries will be judged as a whole, instead of by individual piece. Each artist may submit up to 3 applications. JURORS: Rosalyn Richards received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design & MFA from Yale University School of Art. Her work is represented in many museum & university collections. She has held artist residencies at numerous locations in the U.S., including VA Center for Creative Arts and Ragdale in Illinois. She was a visiting artist and critic at Colby College, Cornell University, the University of Dallas and Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in Tianjin, China. Richards retired as Professor of Art at Bucknell University in 2014.

Chad Andrews received his BFA in studio art from Kutztown University & his MFA in printmaking from the University of PA. He has taught at The University of PA for five years, and held the position of Director of Visual Arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts (Interlochen, MI) for six years. He is currently a full-time instructor of printmaking and 2-dimensional design at Bloomsburg University. He maintains a private studio at the Pajama Factory in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

She has exhibited at the Ellen Miller Gallery, University of Richmond Museum, Ridderhof Martin Gallery at the University of Mary Washington, 55 Mercer Gallery, International Print Center New York, the 808 Gallery at Boston University, Columbia College, The Xavier University Art Gallery& the RISD Museum of Art.

She received an artist’s travel grant to study Eastern woodblock printmaking techniques at Kyoto Seika University in 2005. Since then, Hankin has attended residencies at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, the Women’s Studio Workshop, and Vermont Studio Center. She has taught printmaking, design, and drawing at American University, George Mason University, and the Rhode Island School of Design. She is currently represented at the Ellen Miller Gallery.

Each summer, Sylvia White Gallery offers an exhibition opportunity to all artists interested in applying. This year selected artists will be exhibited in their 4th Annual Juried Show. Additionally, three artists will be selected for concurrent solo shows at dates to be arranged.

Sylvia White Gallery opened in 2008 and has exhibited artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Robert Graham, Ed Moses, Dale Chihuly, William Wiley, Viola Frey and others.

AWARDS: Selected artists will participate in our 4th Annual Juried Show August 3-September 3. Additionally, three artists will be selected for a concurrent solo exhibition. All entries will be considered for both opportunities.

Brand 40 – Works on Paper

The Associates of Brand Library & Art Center and the Glendale Public Library announce a call to artists for an exhibition September 17 – October 28, 2011 at the Brand Library Art Galleries in Glendale, CA. The Brand Library Art Galleries offer visitors a professional gallery experience and showcases works by established and emerging artists that educate, enlighten, challenge and enrich people’s lives.

ELIGIBILITY: Participation is open to artists residing in the United States. Entries must be original work recently executed and not previously shown at the Brand Library Art Galleries. Do not submit work, unless available August 12 to October 29, 2011.

MEDIA: Any work on paper: collages, drawings, paintings, photography, prints, watercolors, 3-dimensional work, etc. The “topic” for this show is “Entrances & Exits.”

DEADLINE: June 1, 2011 for receipt of signed entry form, CD, fees and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

NOTIFICATION: Jury results will be mailied June 9, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: Non-refundable fees must accompany the submittal form: $20 for the first work, $10 for each additional work. A maximum of 3 works may be submitted. JUROR: Peter Frank is art critic for the Huffington Post and Adjunct Senior Curator at the Riverside Art Museum. He is past critic for Angeleno magazine and the L. A. Weekly and was Editor for THE magazine Los Angeles and Visions Art Quarterly. Frank was born in New York, where he served as art critic for The Village Voice and The SoHo Weekly News, and moved to Los Angeles in 1988.

Frank contributes articles to numerous publications and has organized numerous theme and survey shows, most notably “19 Artists – Emergent Americans,” the 1981 Exxon National Exhibition mounted at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. McPherson & Co. Documentext published his Something Else Press: An Annotated Bibliography in 1983. A cycle of poems, The Travelogues, was issued by Sun & Moon Press in 1982. Abbeville Press released New, Used & Improved, an overview of the New York art scene co-written with Michael McKenzie, in 1987.

AWARDS: $4000 in prizes will be awarded.

SALES: Unless specified “NFS,” all works will be offered for sale. If the price is not indicated, the piece will be considered NFS. The commission to the Brand Associates is 25%. But for many, New York City is the holy grail of “making it” as an artist. For those of you that cannot move to New York to pursue your holy grail, this next opportunity will get you a little closer.

fuelNYC.com is currently accepting submissions for representation in it’s online store. Representation includes a Featured Artist spot for one month on it’s home page and inclusion in two exhibitions annually in New York City.

COMMISSION: The store takes a 50% commission and pays in around 30 days. A simple consignment agreement will have to be signed with fuelNYC.
