list of DISTASTE

On paper, I am NOT a finicky eater, but there is a list of things I don’t eat by choice.  I’ve always disliked Ranch dressing until this 40 Aprons recipe changed my mind (not a sponsored post). The remainder of the list includes collard greens, anything eaten alive, American “cheese”, licorice & few other random odds & ends that are not normal options anyway. Sometimes you don’t know until confronted with an unedible.  I had to eat American cheese last week, and it is still on my mind, obviously, ha.  What are your outside food limits?

This next Call is on another of my lists, but this one is for far better reasons.  I appreciate academic shows, and they align with my list of shows that will help push me toward my career goals. OSU’s Art Department has a great record of good shows and excellent jurors.  This one is no different.  If you work on paper (including photography), and are looking for a quality show, try this one. ENTRY FEE: $30 up to 3

JUROR:   Jodi Throckmorton, curator of contemporary art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. As PAFA’s Contemporary Curator, Throckmorton oversees such programs as, the Morris Gallery Program and the Sculpture Plinth Program. Prior to her current position at PAFA, Throckmorton served as Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University and as associate curator at the San Jose Museum of Art. She holds an MFA in Museum Studies from San Francisco State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Art History and French from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. 

AWARD:  $2,000 will be available for purchase awards. Purchased work will be added to the permanent collection of the Department of Art, housed in the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art. Awards will be selected by the juror after the accepted work has been received.

nuts for NUTS

I make a lot of granola these days.  I tripped across this mostly Paleo recipe & altered it to taste.  (We don’t eat Paleo, specifically, but I am often drawn to the recipes.) This version is absent the oats found in most granola, so it lacks the chalky, starchy lethargic quality of the stereotypical bagged cereal.  My version is mostly nuts & seeds with a bit of dried fruit, coconut oil & a dash of honey.  There seems to always be a batch in the oven, and I’m going through roll after roll of parchment paper.  It is brain food; try it.  This next Call is looking for works on paper.  Take a look…

JUROR:  Rebecca Lax is a Senior Specialist in Contemporary, PWC and Prints & Multiples at Artnet auctions in New York City.  Her background is extensive in contemporary art having spanned 30 years.  Early in her career, she worked at several blue chip galleries: Leo Castelli at 420 West Broadway, Knoedler, Pace Prints and Galerie Lelong, NYC.  Aside from the directorial, curatorial, management and sales knowledge gained from those experiences, she also worked as a corporate art consultant in acquisitions for Goldman Sachs, Banco Santander and Pitney Bowes.  A very important position in her career was spent in the academic sector acting as Director of Finance for the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University. She continues to be a contributing member to Arttable and the Association for Women Art Dealers as well as a Benefit Committee member of the International Print Center of NY.

He has received numerous honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. McElhinney is also a published author who has conducted numerous oral history interviews for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, Coleccion Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, the Frick Center for the History of Collecting, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, other foundations & private individuals.

my CREME-filled heart

My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary with Chinese takeout because neither of felt like cooking or grocery shopping.  It was our typical night egg drop soup & steamed dumplings, but the thing that made the night a celebration came in a paper bag.  A beautiful, fresh chocolate eclair from our local doughnut shop, a guilty pleasure from the middle years of our marriage when that was one of the only splurges we could afford.  Since then, I tend to watch my sugar intake and my husband was diagnosed with a wheat allergy.  But with a that single damn-the-consequences pastry, I felt the heart flutter that says he’ll stick for another twenty.  Some of the best things come in, or on, paper just like in this next Call.  Plus the gallery is gorgeous…

JUROR:  Paul Wong is Artistic Director (retired 2017) of Dieu Donné and a master papermaker/artist who has collaborated with many artists producing groundbreaking work in the creative papermaking medium for over 38 years. Wong has widely exhibited his work in paper, books & installations since 1975 at museums & galleries including Neuberger Museum, Plains Museum, Columbia College Center for Book and Paper Arts, and Dieu Donné. He has conducted papermaking lectures and workshops including: NY Library, Haystack, Penland, Banff, Oxbow, PBI, UArts-Philadelphia, UA-Tuscaloosa, Columbia College-Chicago, Morgan Conservatory-Cleveland  

AWARDS:  $1,300 in prizes –two $500 prizes & two $150 prizes.

SALES:  Barrett Art Center will retain a 30% commission for sales (20% for members).

Tapioca is an other-worldly food.  I love the pearls in pudding and starch as a thickener, but I still find it odd.  Many people think it is a grain, like wheat, but it is processed as a product of the cassava plant.  You may know it as yuca, which can be found from Brazil to Nigeria, but don’t confuse it for yucca, the similar-sounding decorative plant that is related to the Joshua Tree.  And whatever you do, don’t eat a Joshua Tree, ha. ARTIST of the DAY: Anne ten Donkelaar

gone NOT FORGOTTEN

I live amongst the big trees, copious wildlife and dizzying views of the Great Smoky Mountains.  Nature HERE seems rough and rugged and and indomitable. It is easy to forget the delicate wonder and our responsibility to protect it.  Nothing could be clearer in the work of Anne ten Donkelaar, today’s Artist of the Day. (continues below)

“Weeds become poetry, each unique twig gets attention,
nature seems to float.” 

“A damaged butterfly, a broken twig, a bumblebee, some strangely grown weeds: I find all these unique discoveries in my path and then take them home to my studio. Here, I take my time to explore the objects and try to work out how I can show each one to it’s best advantage. My finds inspire me. While looking at them I can invent my own stories about their existence and their lives.  By protecting these precious pieces under glass, I give the objects a second lifeand hope to inspire people to make up their own stories about them.” Anne ten Donkelaar

secretive, ISOLATED GIRLS

My own work has been a study in process & a lot of silhouettes these days. It is no wonder that I have completely fallen for the work of today’s Artist of the Day, Meghan Stratman. She has found a way to gives us little glimpse of the lives of folks like us…and not. Dark & sweet & funny & sad; idealized & unearthly people & creatures & those that lie between. I want to own this work. (continues below)

“I am drawn to stories and lore in all forms… Recurring subjects in my art include ghosts, girls, monsters, and animals, and themes of friendship and loneliness. I like to include bright colors and a sense of humor in my art and enjoy combining elements to humorous effect, such as badgers sporting fezzes or weasels wearing rocket packs. I am also drawn to urban decay, abandoned places, and ghost stories: people and places that are lost and forgotten. My art world is populated with secretive, isolated girls and silly creatures that may or may not be wearing space helmets. I create my work with cut, layered paper, which allows for a sense of texture and dimensionality.”
