CALL for ENTRIES: Is there a Mother in the House?

Learn more about the Is There a Mother in the House exhibit from the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago!

finger FOOD

I have a soft spot for mothers in restaurants.  I remember that struggle eat, feed the child that wasted all their good behavior in the waiting area, try to manage the mashed up mess and smile at the wait staff and hope they think you’ve got it all under control.  I don’t know why so many mothers feel the need to sustain the illusion that being a mother is easy.  We know better.  We are better.  It is hard.  We are up to the task.  This next Call wants all the facets of “mother” we can conjure.  Up to the task?

Check out this Call for Entries from Woman Made Gallery (Chicago, IL) for Is There a Mother in the House?  $30 entry & only open to female-identifying artists. There is nothing more widely-open to interpretation than the concept of “mother”.  Show them your viewpoint…

We consume a lot of extra virgin olive oil, but I have found yet another reason to love this elixir.  It has topical applications too.   I suppose it should occur to me that it would make fantastic lotions and eye creams, but I always thought of it as an ingredient –not for use in pure form.  This next Call is as virginal as my new make remover.  Take a look…

One in Herself

“According to the book, Villa of Mysteries… by Katherine Bradway, the original definition of the term, ‘Virgin’ describes ‘a woman who is one-in-herself, belonging to herself alone, being her own mistress,’ and that the ‘virgin goddesses symbolized women who were complete in themselves and not merely counterparts of male consorts. They were capable of developing their own wholeness through integration, realizing their separate qualities inside themselves rather than through projection onto other persons to whom they were related.’  One in Herself invites artists to present work that expands our ideas of virginity and of what it means to be a woman, “who is one-in-herself.”–from womanmade.org

CUISINE

I get a lot of questions about living without gluten.  When I tell waitstaff at a restaurant, I am met with “I’m sorry” or the sad-trombone-look-of-pity almost every time.  Don’t cry for me Argentina.  GF eating IS what you make it.  It has made my family more adventurous, open and creative when it comes to food.  Feminism is the same; it IS what YOU make it–good & bad.  This next Call wants to know what YOU make of it.  Take a look…

The creativity of food preparation has fundamentally changed on a mainstream level in the past 20 years.  A larger segment of the population cooks with abandon now.  The great divide between foods destined to be either savory or sweet seems to have slowly disappeared.  Chocolate is as likely to show up in an entree as bacon is to show up in a dessert.  This next Call encourages you to explore and challenge boundaries presented by both materials & concepts.  Take a look…

PASTA

Today I spied organic alphabet soup in the grocery store.  There is some humor to be found in the idea that someone invested in eating organically would also want a food so tortured & processed that it can spell out words.  And, I don’t believe anyone is REALLY teaching their children to read with soup.  So do we really need to communicate with food, literally, or am I just a huge hypocrite for constantly preach about the transformative & communicative power of food?  Okay, I’m a hypocrite, ha.  But, this next Call speaks to the power of text; however, I suspect they are not searching for alphabet pasta mosaics.  Check out this fantastic venue…

It’s that time again. What would I be if I had to portray myself as food?  This week I choose kefir.  I am fascinated.  My new gluten-free regimen had increased my dairy intake, and my son has dairy sensitivities.  Enter milk kefir.  Kefir is simply milk that is fermented at room temperature with kefir grains for about 24 hours. It has many wonderful health benefits, a great flavor and is also usually tolerated well by the lactose intolerant.  I’ve been buying it commercially for $4 a quart, but now I’m going to make it myself.  Think of it as a self-portrait…
