CALL for ENTRIES: Boys will be Boys

Learn more about the Boys will be Boys Exhibit from Whitdel Arts!

COOK for me

Why are there so few female chefs and so many female cooks?  It turns out that professional cooking jobs are like so many other jobs –ruled by gender stereotypes.  I lived most of my pre-adolescence without a residential female figure, and I was always taught it was my job to learn to cook.  I cooked most of my familial meals from age 5, yes 5, to age 15.  Imagine my surprise when I got to cooking school and found myself the only woman in my class.  This next call explores masculinity. Do you have something to say? Take a look…

“This exhibition will explore different archetypes of masculinity, today’s societal pressures on men, and ramifications of institutionalized expectations.  Masculinity has a long and varied history, but with the current climate, the constructs of manhood have come to the forefront of conversation. With this exhibition, we aim to continue the conversation on the limitations and outcomes of the concept of masculinity.” –from whitdelarts.com

 cheers TO YOU

A family member gifted me with some orange bitters over the holidays.  It was supposed to be a snarky jab at newly found inability to keep my opinions to myself.  I accepted it with a smile, a nod and a feigned chuckle.  It was an ironic gesture of politeness in the face of passive aggressiveness.  The jokes on them though; the martini’s have been fantastic. This Call wants all the bitter you can muster.  They’re reading my mind…

“In times of cynicism, disgust and hopelessness, we look for outlets to express our frustrations, as well as our aspirations for action and change.  We decided to take one of our favorite exhibitions and reboot it in this current time of disillusionment and subjective truth.  Whitdel Arts is currently accepting submissions for The Bitters 2: We’re Fucked.   This exhibition will explore how we currently cope with lies, greed, conflict, inequality, and paranoia – with all the sarcasm, and overall disenchantment that made the first “The Bitters” exhibition so satisfying. “ –from whitdelarts.com

What are the most used tools in your kitchen?  Aside from knives, mine are the vegetable peeler, 2 sizes of whisks & measuring cups/spoons.  In my head, I can’t imagine not having a food processor & an immersion blender, but I don’t really use them that much.  The newest tech isn’t always the best tech for the job.  This next Call is a reflection on a the evolution of tech through art.  You’ll love this one…

“Ever since Pong took the world by storm, video games have been a rapidly growing and evolving art form.  Earlier video games, limited by the technology of the time forced designers to think of new ways of rendering figures. However as the technology evolved so did the art form, with modern games limited only by the imagination of the developer.  8-Bit examines this evolution through the lens of visual art and how style, technology & art interact & influence one another, channeling inspiration from “retro” technology into art.” –from whitdelarts.com

GREEN

We are all careful about dairy products & cross contamination as a result of years of PSA-style campaigning about food-borne illness.  But, did you know that leafy greens are among the most dangerous types of foods?  Remember the bagged spinach epidemic from a few years ago.  Leafy greens are at high risk for contamination from manure in the growing process.  You’re not off the hook for eating greens, you just have to promise to wash this type of food really well.  This Call wants to know your type; food references are optional.  Great opportunity at a great gallery…

Whether the typeface is used as a means of communication, or celebrated in its purest form, ‘Just My Type’ aims to showcase it.” –from whitdelarts.com

CALL for ENTRIES: Sensory Overload

Learn more from Whitdel Arts!an APPLE a day

So I picked a peck of peppers today.  Not really.  But I did buy a bushel of apples out of cold storage from my local orchard.  I just couldn’t wait any longer for a sensory overload.   I usually wait for the first bite of sauteed ramps, but that wasn’t enough this year.  So, I am home with a bushel of Mountain York’s.  This week will be filled with the making of apple sauce, apple chips, apple butter, and fresh apples in everything from chicken salad to peanut butter sandwiches and pancakes.  An orchard grown apple (even out of cold storage) is overwhelming abundant in flavor.  I can’t wait.  You don’t have to wait either; this Call is looking for YOUR sensory overload.  Love this theme…
