The freezer saves dinner about two days a week in my house. We purposefully cook more portions than we can eat and save the leftovers. It started out as a way to send lunch with my kiddo for school, but it has become a dinner rescue regularly. When you get busy and have forgotten to plan for dinner and live nearly a half hour from the closest grocery or restaurant, you’re grateful for frozen leftovers. We live fairly remotely –2.5 miles from the closest two-lane road and nearly 10 miles to a minor four-lane highway. So, when the water pump on our car erupted in the driveway, getting groceries became a challenge for the weekend. I’m not really a milk drinker –never have been. I use it in cooking and to make cheese, but by the glass is uncommon. It has in recent years, though, become helpful in the winter months. In the winter, my writing for AAAD & creating my own art (both visual & performing) keeps me indoors most of the time. A lack of sunshine for extended periods of time is often accompanied by a general malaise –the winter blues. Milk isn’t a miracle drug, but the boost of Vitamin D does seem to help. Being both a visual artist and a professor, she has worked and taught nationally at visiting artist residencies & internationally in Ireland, Italy &France, earning opportunities to exhibit at many venues.

AWARDS: Three monetary awards: Best in Show and two honorable mentions.

SALES: Works will be for sale unless noted as NFS (not for sale) on the entry form. ARC does not take commission on any work sold, but will act as a liaison for sales of the artists’ work.

I am grateful for the apples, but I am missing fresh local veggies already. My local orchard serves as my farmers market most weeks. With their cold storage program, I can get local apples for most of the year, but the veggies they offer are limited as of November. Aside from winter squash, the only thing LOCALLY fresh I’ll have until spring are potatoes, onions and maybe a hot house bell pepper or two. My grocery bill is absurd. I’m not having dinners of foie gras & truffles. In fact, most of our meals are vegetable laden. I try to stop by the farmers market at my local apple orchard. This week, it was $25 for apples, onions, 4 sweet potatoes, 3 bell peppers & 2 eggplant. As you might imagine, I then proceeded to spend a fortune at the grocery store to supplement my farmers market finds. I have a family of only three people + my four-legged child. I buy in-season, cost-conscious items. I consider myself a master food shopper, and I can barely hang on to a healthy menu. Voices X, the anniversary exhibit of Voices from the Warehouse, is a month-long art exhibit and cultural event located in a re-purposed industrial warehouse within Dubuque, Iowa’s Historic Millwork District. Voices from the Warehouse is a grass-roots art movement wrought by distinctive artists and like-minded advocates.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all 18+ artists

MEDIA: All media–ideally suited for the transformative art experience, which includes installations, video, two- and three-dimensional art.

ENTRY FEE: No fee for 5 to 10 images

AWARDS: Voices X is pleased to support the artists by offering a $300 stipend to each artist selected for the show, which will take place September 6 through October 4, 2014. JURORS: Each art collector may select one or more pieces by artists that are not currently represented in their private collection. Collectors’ names will be kept anonymous until the opening reception. Editor’s Note: My assumption is these are collectors that purchase work in the Sylvia White Gallery. Because they are anonymous, the best recommendation I have for research is to spend some time investigate the artists the gallery represents, since in theory, it is their work these collectors are purchasing–at least in part.

AWARDS: Selected artists will participate in 2014 Collector’s Choice exhibit April 23rd to May 24th, 2014 at Sylvia White Gallery.

SALES: Unless otherwise specified, accepted works will be considered for sale at the price indicated and 40% commission will be retained by The Sylvia White Gallery.
