Every photograph tells a story. When part of a body of work, the photograph takes on a new meaning, becoming part of a larger and more complete narrative. A portfolio allows the photographer to explore the complexities of their subject, and provide context that gives it richness and meaning that is more than the sum of its parts. The Kiernan Gallery is pleased to announce its third annual portfolio showcase.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

DEADLINE: May 22, 2014

NOTIFICATION: Approx. 8 days after deadline.

ENTRY FEE: $50 for 10 – 15 images

JUROR: In 2010, Gordon Stettinius founded Candela Books, a publishing company, and, to date, they have produced three fine art photography monographs with more in the works. In 2011, Gordon founded a fine art photography gallery dedicated to featuring the work of nationally respected photographers. Candela Books + Gallery now inhabits a renovated 3,800 square foot building in the downtown arts district of Richmond, Virginia and is one of the leading advocates for fine art photography in the mid-Atlantic region.

As a photographer, Stettinius has been exhibited nationally and internationally over the last twenty years and his work can be found in numerous private and public collections. His work is represented by Robin Rice Gallery in New York and Page Bond Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. Stettinius is also an emeritus member of 1708 Gallery and an adjunct professor at Virginia Commonwealth University.

AWARDS: For this exhibition, four photographers will be selected to show their complete bodies of work.

Sudden I was 5 years old watching her dump marshmallows & coconut in cocktail fruit and excitedly explaining all about the food of the gods… ambrosia, a fantasy food. Photographers have a wonderful ability to turn ordinary surroundings into an otherworldly realm. Optical illusions, chemistry, and the mechanics of modern tools, have opened new possibilities for artists to untether their imaginations. Artists exploring make-believe use their dreams and memories as subject matter. Their work distorts reality, making everyday objects and environments alien and magical. Photographers construct their own fantasies, creating alternate worlds that straddle the line between reality and fiction. For Fact and Fantasy, The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that explore the unearthly and strange.

JUROR: Melanie Craven has exhibited her photographic work both in the United States and abroad. She was first published in Hayen’s Ferry Review in 2003 with her Identical Otherness series that she continues to work on in collaboration with her identical twin Michelle. In 2006 she was included in Collotype Past, Present and Future in conjunction with the exhibition at The Foyer Gallery at the Center for Fine Print Research in Bristol, England. Recently, her work was included in Jill Enfield’s Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes. Over a decade ago Melanie Craven and her sister Michelle founded Tilt Gallery. And in 2012 with nearly a 100 exhibitions under her belt, Melanie Craven moved Tilt from its home in Phoenix to the Arts District in Old Town Scottsdale. In Tilts new location Craven continues to offer individual artist exhibitions, juried and group shows and serves the local art community.

I am no longer fascinated by deconstructed food. I’ll admit that for a while there, it seemed like an art to be served a deconstructed Caesar salad, but I’m over it. If I wanted deconstructed food, couldn’t I just partially create dishes at home and save myself both the extra preparation of making the completed meal and save the trip to the restaurant? JUROR: Jennifer Schlesinger Hanson is an artist, curator, and educator based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Schlesinger Hanson has exhibited widely at Southwest regional institutions, as well as national institutions such as the Southeast Museum of Photography and the Chelsea Art Museum.

Her work has been published online and in print with international publications such as Black and White Magazine U.S and UK, Diffusion Magazine and Fotoritim. Schlesinger Hanson is represented in many public collections, including the Southeast Museum of Photography, FL; The New Mexico Museum of Art and the New Mexico History Museum / Palace of the Governors Photo Archives.

She has received several honors in recognition of her work including a Golden Light Award in Landscape Photography from the Maine Photographic Workshops and the Center for Contemporary Arts Photography Auction Award in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her awards include the Santa Fe Prize for Photography by the Center and the Eliot Porter Fellowship by the New Mexico Council for Photography. She has been the Director of VERVE Gallery of Photography since 2005.

Feeling too lazy to make it from scratch, I decided to BUY a ready-made mix for hot chocolate last week. Then I read the label. Damn the labels. I just cannot knowingly consume another artificial sweetener. Acesulfame Potassium is in almost every mix out there–even the non-diet ones. So, I went home and pulled out my recipe. Alternative process photography today is a blend of contemporary ideas and historical techniques. Many photographers have rediscovered some of the forgotten early processes, bringing a unique style to present-day image making. Incorporating these processes into their work involves both skilled craftsmanship and a creative blending of new and old. For our third annual alternative process exhibition, The Alternative Approach, The Kiernan Gallery seeks photographers who use handmade and historic photographic techniques in their work. 19th century photographic processes dominate this genre.

JUROR: Christopher James is an internationally known artist and photographer whose photographs, paintings, and alternative process images have been exhibited in galleries and museums in this country and abroad. His work has been published and shown extensively, including exhibitions in The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The George Eastman House, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The first two editions of his book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes (Delmar Cengage -Albany, NY), have received international critical acclaim and are universally recognized by artists, curators, historians, and educators as the definitive texts in the genre of alternative process photography and photographically integrated media and culture. A significantly expanded 850 page, 600 image, 3rd edition will be published in 2013.

Christopher, after 13 years at Harvard University, is presently University Professor, and Director of the MFA in Photography program at The College of Art and Design – Lesley University. He is also a painter, graphic designer, and a professional scuba diver.

I have been on a personal voyage for the past 9 months, and there is no end in sight. My father died in December, betrayed by his body and love of food that didn’t love him back. My grandmother struggles with Alzheimer’s and the loss of both her memory and her appetite. I have been battling my health and grappling with the loss of my decades-long love affair with wheat. I can’t help but believe that it is all a voyage taking me to some unknown path that will be my future. The voyage has already spurred new art. In addition to organizing and curating physical exhibitions around the country, Mitchell curates Plates to Pixels, an online photographic gallery that bridges the gap between antiquated photographic processes and new digital media. He is a fine art photographer, educator, and graphic designer currently serving on the Board of Directors for Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, Oregon. Self-portraiture is often used to explore and manipulate identity. There is a performative aspect to this genre. By turning the camera on oneself the photographer is brought out from behind their lens, and able to choose how they would like to the world to see them.

The photographer invites judgment and critique on not only their artistic message, but also their appearance and demeanor. For this exhibition, The Kiernan Gallery seeks self-portraits that provide insight into the “second self” that appears when artist becomes subject.

JUROR: Stephen Sheffield, a native of the Boston area, is an alumnus of Cornell University, where he obtained a BFA in painting and photography. He received his MFA in photography from the California College of the Arts, in Oakland/San Francisco, studying under Larry Sultan and Jean Finley.

His photographs, often self-portraits depict both everyday and unusual events, all framed by his unique, and occasionally dark, sense of humor. His masterful storytelling, use of traditional silver, alternative processes, mural printing, and large-scale photo assemblage bring to his work a unique and cinematic mood.

Stephen has exhibited nationally for over 20 years, and has a number of large and small-scale commissions in, Boston, Cambridge and Brooklyn NY. He has worked out of his studio in Boston’s Fort Point for over 18 years. Stephen is represented locally by the Panopticon gallery, and runs the advanced black and white silver photography major at the New England School of Photography in Boston.

Jennifer Schwartz co-founded the Fraction Retreats program, and she regularly participates in portfolio reviews such as PhotoNOLA, PhotoLucida, Atlanta Celebrates Photography, FotoFest and others.

Jennifer Schwartz is originally from Richmond, Virginia, and has her BA from Colgate University and her MA from Georgia State University. The owner of a successful commercial photography business for ten years, she opened her gallery in 2009 to give Atlanta’s thriving photography community a venue to showcase the work of emerging photographers.

This next Call is a perfect example. One of my favorite photography-specific galleries is offering their FIRST non-photographic solo show. So exciting…

Check out this Call for Entries for Spring Featured Artist – Abstraction from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, VA). The entry fee is higher than our norm, but remember…you’re gambling on a SOLO show.

CALL for ENTRIES:
Abstraction

Abstract art is an exploration of color, form, movement, or other intangibles that need not be wedded to a recognizable subject. Such work is limited only by the imagination. Non-figurative art, nonobjective art, and nonrepresentational art are all acceptable.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: The Kiernan Gallery seeks a body of 2D, non-photographic work that partially or fully obscure the recognizable world.

DEADLINE: February 20, 2013

NOTIFICATION: Approx. 8 days later

ENTRY FEE: 8 -10 pieces for $50

AWARDS: A one-month solo show. A feature on The Kiernan Gallery’s blog and website. An electronic show card designed and distributed by The Kiernan Gallery.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. But, they DO still have incentive to sell your work. The Kiernan Gallery was founded by an emerging artist, and recognizes the importance of selling work; they believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.
