I find myself craving carpaccio lately, but I’m not much of a meat eater anymore.  Carpaccio is typically made using the highest quality, thinly sliced beef sirloin then served raw.  But in recent years, the same term is now used in reference to the same treatment of fish and vegetables.  The only unifying factor is the dressing of raw ingredients with lemon and olive oil, salt and pepper.  Done correctly, the balance of ingredients in like a delicate collage.  That beautiful balance is what I really crave. It can’t be done by recipe, only by feel, by taste, by experience.  This Call wants the same collage.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Sweetwater Center for the Arts (Sewickley, PA) for Poetic Logic.  Great space. Thematically sound.  Talented juror.  What’s not to love?

Poetic Logic

“In the early 20th century, with the advent of mass production of materials and media artists like Pablo Picasso, George Braque and Kurt Schwitters began developing collage as a way of reappropriating and repurposing materials and images to imbue their works with juxtaposed information that expressed a kind of poetic logic of association.  In our current culture of mass information and media it is not surprising that artists are finding a continued purpose in investigating such relevant processes.” –from sweetwaterartcenter.org

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists residing in the U.S.

MEDIA: Open to collage, assemblage & other processes of incorporating elements of repurposed materials as a way of expressing our contemporary experience

DEADLINE:  December 14, 2015

NOTIFICATION:  December 28, 2015

ENTRY FEE: $25 for up to 4 works

GLASS

I rarely drink alcoholic beverages at home.  I have a sort of daily ritual that starts with two carbonated drinks which are followed by unsweetened, decaffeinated, iced black and/or orange tea until bedtime.  It never really occurs to me to deviate from that norm except when we are on stage or out for a special occasion.  Maybe I would be more inspired if I had something creative out of which to drink, like the ones found in this next Call.  It isn’t just about pottery either…

Check out this Call for Entries from Sweetwater Center for the Arts (Sewickley, PA) for Sips, Shots & Gulps an exhibit of handmade drinking vessels. Only $25 to enter, and it is NOT limited to ceramics. Take a look…

Stuffed cabbage is a recipe that takes me back to my childhood.  My grandmother had such a talent for making perfect little rolls.  I wish I had paid better attention to how she did that because I struggle to make them presentable.  Imagine my delight when I found a recipe for Deconstructed Stuffed Cabbage.  So excited to try this one.  In the meantime, this next Call is all about the CONstructed not the DEconstructed.  Loving this theme…

SALAD
anyone?

My frugality DOES know boundaries.  The one thing I don’t do is public foraging.  It isn’t that I am necessarily opposed to eating wild things, like dandelion greens.  Actually, I’m all for it, to be honest.  But I am fearful of things unknown that might be sprayed ONTO the wild things.  I live on the boundary (within a 1/2 mile) of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but since you cannot legally forage in any National Park, that doesn’t really help me find a safe place to forage. I suppose my wild things will be limited to art, for now–like this next Call.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Sweetwater Center for the Arts (Sewickley, PA) for Wild Things, an exhibit of art with unrestrained spirit.  What more could you want than a description like that?
