Did you know that water lilies are edible? ME EITHER. I tripped across Edible Wild Plants of Pennsylvania and Neighboring States by Richard J. & Mary Lee Medve from Penn State Press (©1990). Don’t ask how I ended up in this rabbit hole; let’s just blame Instagram or Pinterest. Not only are water lilies edible, now I have recipes too. I can’t find any reference for their flavor, but I’m guessing floral and grassy like most edible flowers & greens. ELIGIBILITY: Open to U.S. artists 18+

THEME: Summer Song. The exhibition is open to varied interpretations of the subject, from literal to far-ranging. Representational images of summer-related sights, activities, impressions, or atmosphere—as well as surrealistic or abstract evocations inspired by the subject—are welcome. Expressions may range from images of sun, sea, surf, and verdure to a more melancholy awareness of summer’s last gasp, a prelude to fall. Artists may also respond to the musical aspect of this call for entries. One could interpret the rhythm of the season, composing a visual image of summer’s harmonies.

MEDIA: All media considered except photography, digital & computer generated art.

DEADLINE: March 29, 2018

NOTIFICATION: April 27, 2018

ENTRY FEE: $45 up to 3 entries. $35 for STAC artist level members.

JUROR: Throughout years of writing on art, juror Carol Strickland‘s motive has been to democratize the subject of Impressionism, to remove the impediments of fear and snobbery. She has a doctorate from the Univ. of Michigan & contributes to Art in America magazine, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Art and Antiques, MOMUS, and Private Journey magazine. Strickland writes a monthly column for clydefitchreport.com. Strickland’s screenplays for feature films have won prizes in prestigious script competitions.

THEME: This exhibition/competition will encompass ALL varieties of nocturnal art: twilight/dusk, dawn, urban, interiors, landscapes, figures, etc.

JUROR: An art collector for over 25 years, Tim Newton has amassed a collection of some 300 works in an array of genres—still lifes, figures, landscapes, wildlife works and bronze sculptures. His collection shows great diversity which includes pieces by many prominent living master artists. He is currently in his third term as Chairman of the Board of the Salmagundi Club, and he also serves on the Board of the Artists’ Fellowship, the Board of Trustees for the Stobart Foundation & the Board of Advisors for the Clark Hulings Foundation.

Grass won’t grow in my yard. There are too many trees, too much shade & too much moisture. But on the mountain slope behind my house there is a beautiful sunny spot that grows clover like a cash crop. Have you eaten clover? Oh my. JUROR: Wendy Hollender is a botanical artist, illustrator, author, and instructor. Hollender’s illustrations have been published in The New York Times, “O” The Oprah Magazine, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, Sunset Magazine, The Observer (UK) and in a recent large advertising campaign for the National Peanut Board. Her work was included in the 13th International Exhibition at Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, and in exhibitions at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, and the Smithsonian National Museum for Natural History. She began a career in botanical illustration after completing a certificate at the New York Botanical Garden in 1998. In 2009 she moved from Manhattan to a farm in the Hudson Valley so she could live among the plants she documents in her work.

AWARDS: 1st Place $250 Award of Excellence & 2017 Winners Exhibition Opportunity. 2nd Place $150 Award of Merit.

Childhood Memories

Memories are often the inspiration for art. Artists give life to the characters and environments of our childhood memories, recording fragments of dreams, snippets of passing time, and experiences that have shaped our lives.

This call asks artists to explore childhood memories…the early rituals, the rites of passage, the innocence of early life experiences that celebrate the passionate world of childhood. Examples include childhood memories pertaining to a specific event or experience that has previously occurred. For example, recollection of an episode among friends or family members in a specific time (holidays), places (school), and/or and memories of the associated emotions of the event.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists 18+

MEDIA: Open to all media except photography

DEADLINE: August 30, 2013

NOTIFICATION: September 23, 2013

ENTRY FEE: $45 for up to 3 entries. $35 for STAC member artists.

JUROR: Seung Lee is a Korean-American contemporary artist. He received BFA in Drawing from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland and MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Seung Lee is a Professor of Art at Long Island University, Post Campus, where he is a director of Fine Arts and Graduate Studies. His paintings, drawings, and large-scale installations have been exhibited extensively in the US as well as internationally.

In 2011, Seung was awarded as “Best International Korean Artist” from Korean Art Association. Seung Lee was invited to lecture for “NY Artist Series: Seung Lee” which was part of National Art Educators Association Conference in NYC.

I won’t presume to give you life advice, and there are dozens of sites dedicated to give you advice on how to be a “successful” artist. So, I will only repeat what we all learned in kindergarten. You are what you eat. You are given only one life with which to be creative. Fuel it well and your efforts will be reflected in your work. This next Call will ask you for even more reflection. Reflections

Reflection can be either a physical or a psychological phenomenon. Together they evoke the interplay between perception and conception.

Entries will be judged on the originality and insight with which they embody this theme visually in traditional as well as new media. A brief explanation such as might be printed on a label along with the artist’s information can be helpful, but the best work will succeed in conveying meaning by itself. Longer explanations will not be considered. The use of mirrors in the work is permissible but neither necessary, nor necessarily desirable.

JUROR: James Henry Rubin is an art historian specializing in the history, theory and criticism of nineteenth-century European art, especially that of France. He teaches at Stony Brook, the State University of New York, at both the graduate and undergraduate level. His interests are interdisciplinary, with special attention to cultural history and art and politics. He was educated at Phillips Andover, Yale (B.A.), Harvard (PhD) and the Institut d’Art et d’Archéologie of the Sorbonne in Paris (license-ès-lettres).

Rubin has taught at Harvard University, Boston University and Princeton University. He is currently Professor of Art History at Stony Brook, where he was department chair for fifteen years. He also taught part-time for many years at The Cooper Union, New York City. He has published over fifty articles and essays on subjects ranging from the eighteenth century to the present.

He is the author of ten books. He has served on the International Committee of the College Art Association and represented the CAA at the United Nations. He is a member and Vice President of the Société Paul Cézanne, based in Aix-en-Provence, France. He is a dual French-U.S. citizen, speaking fluent French and English. He travels frequently and lives in New York City and in Mittelbergheim, Alsace.

JUROR: Hilary Harkness, who exhibits with the Mary Boone Gallery in New York City, holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale University School of Art. A former professional violinist, she honed her unique artistic worldview while living in San Francisco, and now splits her time between New York City and New England.

Harkness’ work has been exhibited worldwide, including the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain, and the Deste Foundation in Athens, Greece and is in the collection of the Whitney Museum. She has taught painting and sculpture as Artist in Residence at Yale Summer School of Art and Music, and lectured at Columbia University, Boston University, Yale University, Brandeis University, and the Baltimore Museum of Art.

JUROR: Christopher James is an internationally known artist and photographer whose paintings and alternative process images have been exhibited in galleries and museums in this country and abroad. His work has been published and shown extensively, including shows in The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The George Eastman House, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The 1st edition of his book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes received unprecedented critical acclaim and was the winner The Golden Light Technical Book of the Year. In 2008, a greatly expanded, and lavishly illustrated, 2nd edition was published by Delmar Cengage and has become universally recognized as the definitive text in the genre. A 3rd edition is currently underway and will be published in 2013. James, after 13 years at Harvard University, is currently University Professor, and Director of the MFA in Photography program at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. He is also a working graphic designer.
