FROM SHIP TO SHORE

Letting go of most of my stuff a few years ago was a life-altering experience.  When I decided to move to Gatlinburg, it just happened that the mountain-top chalet I chose came completely furnished.  After some thought, my husband and I decided to keep our own dishes & cookware, computers & TVs, art & art supplies and all of our child’s furniture and toys.  Everything else had to go.  I could pack everything I own in one day.  That’s freedom, folks.

This Call for Entries is another symbol of freedom.  What do you get when you cross a university art department, a dilapidated storage container, wooden palates and a few solar panels?  An art gallery, of course.  The folks at Container Space are looking for submissions for work for the 2011 season.  Check it out…

Container Space

The Container Space is now accepting proposals for installations performances, recent video, sound, print, & sculpture works.

The Container Space is located in the Sculpture Yard at the rear of the George Mason University’s School of Art.  The shipping container is a recycled object itself.  The container stood deteriorating in a field for two decades before it was re-purposed utilizing found & recycled materials from the garbage & local community. 

A 130 watt solar panel offers power supply for multi-media artist & 24 hr. lighting for visual artist to display work.  Their aim is to engage artist in the context of the shipping container in contemporary society. 

Container Space in 2009!How does the container represent mobility, space, access, economy, memory, & consumption, in a global context?

Submitting artist should consider the notion of the gallery space as sustainable, the close proximity to Washington DC, & the relationship of the shipping container to the global historical narrative.

DEADLINE: December 30, 2010

ENTRY FEE:  No Entry Fee
 
International & National (non-regional) Artist:  Non-regional artist may submit up to 5 recent video or sound pieces created after 2009.  Non-regional artist may propose an installation or performance, drawing resources from the inventory list below. 

An example would be to mail a series of instructions to be carried out by the curator or members of the community student body or faculty in the DC metro area.  Keep in mind that George Mason University is located in close proximity to Washington DC.  All installation proposals will be considered.
 
http://www.containerspace.org/Non-regional artist may also submit prints, drawings, paintings or sculptures.  However, artist should be aware that cost of shipping and insurance, (All work being shipped must be insured).

George Mason University and Container Space hold no liability for work being installed.

All costs will be covered by the artist. 

Regional Artists artist may submit proposals for installation, and performance to be executed by the curator, community, student body or faculty in the DC metro area. Regional Artist may travel to George Mason University and execute an installation or performance. Regional artist may also submit prints, drawings, paintings, sculptures and up to 5 recent video or sound pieces created after 2009.
