Learn more about the Sylvia White Gallery!Each summer, Sylvia White Gallery offers an exhibition opportunity to all artists interested in applying.  This year selected artists will be exhibited in their 4th Annual Juried Show.  Additionally, three artists will be selected for concurrent solo shows at dates to be arranged.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all US/International resident artists at least 18 years of age.

MEDIA:  Eligible entries include paintings, mixed media, works on paper, photography, sculpture, installation art, digital media, video and performance.

DEADLINE: Midnight, June 30, 2011

ENTRY FEE:  $35 (US dollars only) for 3 images, $5 each additional image, maximum 11 ($75).  If you want a website review in lieu of reviewing individual images, entry fee is $50.

AWARDS:  Selected artists will participate in our 4th Annual Juried Show August 3-September 3.  Additionally, three artists will be selected for a concurrent solo exhibition.  All entries will be considered for both opportunities.

SALES:  Unless otherwise specified, accepted works will be considered for sale at the price indicated and 30% of the selling price will be retained by The Sylvia White Gallery.  A purchaser may not remove work until the end of the exhibition.

Learn more about the Celeste Prize 2011The Celeste Network announces a call to artists for Celeste Prize 2011, November 11-13, 2011 at The Invisible Dog, Brooklyn, New York.  The prize has been established to promote international contemporary art in the widest possible sense. 

There will be a final art exhibition with 50 artworks, a final catalogue of circa 150 pages with circa 120 illustrated works of art and critical texts, as well as 5 prize awards and benefits totaling 30,000 € (approx. $42,000 US).  The exhibition of finalist works, voting and awards will take place at The Invisible Dog, Brooklyn, New York, 11-13 November 2011.

On feeling sacrificable by 2010 Painting Winner Gianni PolitiELIGIBILITY: The art competition is open to any person practicing art either as a professional artist in full-time or part-time, student artist or self-taught artist from anywhere in the world. There is no age limit for applicants and the prize is open to all artists whatever their qualifications, with or without experience of public or private exhibitions, critical acclaim, or collectors at a national or international level. The prize encourages participation by artists at every level.

MEDIA:  Painting, photography, graphics, drawing, print, video, sculpture, installation.  Excellence in content, contemporary aesthetic, technique, and material is sought in the selection of works for the final exhibition.  Works of art submitted to the prize must have been completed in the last 24 months, and do not necessarily have to have been exhibited before.  There is no special subject, title or theme required for participating works, they can range from being figurative to abstract, from conceptual to participatory in content and presentation.

NUTS for YOU!

I believe that food has a sense of place.  When you eat cotton candy, don’t you think of going to the fair?  When I taste boiled peanuts (Yes, Virginia, they do exist), I am instantly transported to South Carolina.  You have associations of your own, no doubt. This Call is named Sense of Place, but it isn’t a theme.  Maybe it comes from the enormous sense of place felt even through photographs of this beautiful gallery space.  Inspired yet?

Check out this Call for Entries from the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, GA for the 2011 National Juried Exhbition: A Sense of Place.  The entry fee is low, and once again, the juror is well-documented and happens to be a printmaker, although many media are embraced.  This looks like a winner…

Learn more about the Sense of Place show from GHIA!The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art (GHIA) is pleased to announce its 2011 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place.  Open to participants from throughout the United States, this 31st annual event seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists. 

Founded in 1937 and housed in the historic Nicholas Ware mansion (c. 1818), GHIA is Augusta’s only independent nonprofit visual arts school and gallery.  The Institute serves as a showcase for local, regional, and national artists, offering rotating exhibitions of outstanding contemporary artwork year-round.  In addition, professionally taught studio art classes in a wide variety of media are provided to students of all ages and experience levels.

ELIGIBILITY:  The 2011 juried fine art competition is open to all US artists age 18 and older.  All works must be original, not previously exhibited at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, and completed on or after June 1, 2009.

Learn more about the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art!JUROR:  Tom Hammond, noted printmaker and professor emeritus at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, will serve as juror for A Sense of Place 2011.  Over the past thirty years Hammond has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows throughout the United States and abroad.  His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Royal Museum of Art, Antwerp, Belgium; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina.  Hammond holds a master of arts from East Carolina University and also studied at Atelier 17 in Paris.

AWARDS: Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror’s Awards.  Award recipients will be announced at the exhibition’s opening reception on Friday, September 16, 2011.

SALES:  Sales will be encouraged, and all works are assumed to be available for purchase unless designated “Not For Sale” (NFS).  A 35% gallery commission will be charged on sales of all exhibited artwork.

Learn more about the Miniature Show at the Parklane Gallery!Parklane Gallery in Kirkland, WA welcomes miniature artists from across the country and around the world to enter their 19th Annual International Miniature Show, May 3 – June 5.

ELIGIBILITY:  Entries are admitted to the show following strict adherence to the international definition of miniature art:

1. Miniature paintings and sculptures are fine art on a small scale with minute attention to detail which can be enlarged or withstand close inspection without revealing any faults.

2. A representational subject should be no larger than 1/6th of its actual size. Subjects too small for portrayal in 1/6th or smaller than their actual size, may meet the spirit of a miniature if the work meets the above definition of miniature art. Non-representational work such as abstracts or surrealism may meet the spirit of a miniature if all other factors in the definition of a miniature are met.

3. Image size not to exceed 25 square inches (161cm). Sculptures may not exceed 8 inches (20.5cm) in any dimension, including the base.

Don't you just LOVE the miniature sculpture by Dalton Ghetti? He is not associated with this show. Ghetti is just one of my favorites.

MEDIA:  Photography, computer-generated art and any art that does not conform to miniature art and hanging guidelines will not be accepted. Artists may view or download the American Miniaturists’ Association Guidebook  for additional information.

ENTRY FEE:  US Funds Only. First entry fee is $25.00 plus $5.00 for each additional entry, up to 7 total entries. Local artists who hand-carry paintings to the gallery are not required to pay the shipping fee.

Miniature painting by Juror James F. Smith!JUROR:  James F. Smith is currently teaching at Portland Community College, adult classes at the Walters Cultural Art Center and at Cornell Estates, as well as the Sequoia Gallery in Hillsboro, Oregon.  He has exhibited his works in several International shows including the Cider Painters of America and the Seaside Gallery in North Carolina.  He has won a number of awards from the Cider Painters in past years including 2010.  He has also exhibited at numerous galleries on the Oregon Coast and in the Portland, Oregon areas.

AWARDS:  Jurors will award Best of Show $500, 1st Place $300, 2nd Place $200, PLUS Numerous Sponsor Awards.

Today, I am going to give you a time-tested Southern recipe for success.  Use sugar, not vinegar.  It worked for Mary Poppins; it will work for you.  When sending in your Calls for Entries, your submissions for the $2 Art Contest or submissions for ANY show.  Be professional, but above all else… be nice.  I am going to have to quit saying that I do not usually recommend online exhibits because here is another one.  It is a great exhibit sponsored by a great site (albeit a competitor, of sorts)Consider the benefits.

Learn more about the Art Kudos show sponsored by Artshow.com!Art Kudos is an annual international juried competition that serves to recognize and honor excellence in the visual arts.  Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from world-wide exposure in a year-long online exhibition and have the opportunity to win cash awards for their exemplary work.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to artists anywhere in the world, 18 years of age or older. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists.

JUROR:  Holly Koons McCullough is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia.  She began her career at the Telfair in 1996, serving as the museum’s Curator of Education before assuming leadership of the curatorial department.

A. in English and art history from the University of Georgia and a M.A. in art history from the University of Notre Dame.

AWARDS: Exemplary works will be displayed in a year-long online exhibition at www.artkudos.com beginning August 15th, 2011.  Cash awards totaling $4,400 will be distributed as follows: Best of Show – $1,200; Second Place – $900; Third Place – $750; Founder’s Award of Distinction – $500; (3) Merit Awards – $250 each; (3) Honorable Mentions – $100 each.

SALTY BUT SWEET

I grew up with a single father from age 3 to 13, and it was a culinary adventure.  One of my fondest memories is of weekend-long motorcycle trips when I was around 8.  We’d climb on and hit the road.  I would freeze in the morning early-morning air.  My father’s solution?  We’d stop at every other golden arches we could find for french fries and hot fudge sundaes.  This next Call is a whole different way to celebrate two-wheeled freedom.

Nature Abstract by Juror Susan LehmanJURORS:  Susan Lehman, Oregon artist and art educator, began life-long passion for motorcycles that began with her first ride on the back of a restored 1951 Vincent Black Shadow. Fans of British café-style racers, she and her husband have owned and ridden dozens of motorcycles. Susan’s formal art training was at California College of Arts in Oakland, CA. She has co-produced two juried art exhibitions for the museum.

Philip Koenen, Since an early age, Philip has had two passions; motorsports and film making. Among the founding students of the now famous Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University, Philip was asked to join the Eisaman, Johns & Laws advertising agency to work on the U.S. Suzuki motorcycle account and later to be the Executive Producer for their Film and Television Department. In 1983, he joined the Stunt Driving Team, Driver’s Inc. the clientele of which included Ferrari, Jaguar, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. In 1984 he left advertising to follow his passion for building and restoring automobiles. Today Philip continues to successfully operate Grand Touring Garage with a worldwide clientele.

Artwork by Christiaan Dutch MostertChristiaan “Dutch” Mostert, is an internationally recognized watercolor artist. Born in Holland he received early training from his artist father. A full-time freelance artist since 1978, his travels through Europe, Africa the Middle East and the Pacific Rim countries have provided him with a wealth of subject matter for his works. Though known for marine subjects Dutch has also developed a love of classic vehicles.

Mike Boyle, is an avid collector of vintage Motorcycles. He began restoring cars and motorcycles in 1964. For 32 years he owned and operated a large repair and restoration business in San Diego. Since his move to Coos Bay in 2006 he does restoration work only on his own collections of cars and motorcycles.

Artwork by Juror Mike HolmMichael Holm, works primarily in digitally manipulated photography, printmaking and design. He has had a life-long interest in motorcycles. Mike received a BA in Art and photography from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been instrumental in the upcoming exhibition of motorcycles and motorcycle art.

AWARDS:  First Place Award will receive cash prize of $500, Second Place Award will receive cash prize of $350, Third Place Award will receive cash prize of $250 and Four Honorable Mention ribbons will also be awarded.

SALES:  Works in the exhibition may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale as commission to Coos Art Museum.

CALL for ENTRIES: 100th Exhibition

I have made hundreds of grilled cheese sandwiches.  I have entered hundreds of art shows.  I have made hundreds of canapes and attended hundreds of opening night receptions.  I believe that the 100 mark is to be celebrated.  This blog will soon celebrate its 300th post.  This next Call for Entries should put you in the mood to celebrate.

MEDIA:  All fine arts media: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics.

Anne von Stuelpnagel
is Director of Exhibitions at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut; Since 1995 she has been responsible for the design of the 12-14 exhibitions per year of the Museum; Having worked at the Bruce Museum since 1980, her responsibilities included art, history, anthropology, and science.  She received her BFA from Blocherer School of Fine Art and Applied Sciences, in Munich, Germany with a Major in painting and a Minor in Interior Design.  Anne initiated and has carried out, for many years, the Outdoor Art Show of the Bruce Museum.  After settling in the United States, in 1977, she studied printmaking and has since worked primarily as a printmaker.

Look Homeward Angles by Robert WinklerThe Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition is a national juried competition presented annually by the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

Made possible by the generosity of longtime arts supporters Martin & Doris Rosen, this national, juried competition continues a long-held tradition of showcasing the best of large-scale, contemporary American sculpture. Each year, 10 sculptures are selected and are situated in outdoor, public settings across campus. A cash prize is awarded to the artist whose work is chosen as that year’s Rosen Award winner.

Since its establishment in 1987, The Rosen has become an integral part of An Appalachian Summer Festival, the university’s annual multi-arts celebration, with the announcement of the Rosen Award winner coming during the festival’s annual Sculpture Walk with that year’s juror.

Fresh Air Freshener by Lee MillardELIGIBILITY:  The 25th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition  is open to artists currently residing in the US and at least 18 years of age. Artists exhibited in previous Rosen Competitions are not eligible to enter for three years. Previous recipients of the Martin and Doris Rosen Award are not eligible to enter for five years.

ENTRY FEE: $20 non-refundable entry fee

Fuel for Fire by Jim BuonaccorsiAWARDS:  Ten finalists will be selected for installation on the Appalachian State University’s (ASU) campus. All finalists, whose works are installed on campus, will receive a $1,000 honorarium. The Rosen Sculpture Competition will provide installation equipment and will cover the cost of installation and lodging during installation and de-installation.

One artist will be named as the Martin & Doris Rosen Award Winner and will receive a cash prize of $5,000 plus a weeklong residency with additional stipend, within ASU’s Department of Art during the 2011-2012 academic year.  Awards and Honoraria total $16,500.

In addition, the Rosen Sculpture Competition is a featured exhibition offering a printed catalog, audio tour powered by Guide By Cell, sales program, optional insurance coverage & archives on the competition’s website.

The holy grail for most of the emerging artists I know is a solo show in New York City.  The myth of the NYC show as the tipping point for wealth, success and fame is as idealized as NYC diners, bagels and street hot dog vendors. 

Don’t misunderstand, I LOVE diners, bagels and hot dogs.  I recognize that none of them will change my life, but I will enjoy one and all if you offer me one.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to U.S. resident artists at least 18 years old.  Exception: Artists currently represented by First Street Gallery. 

MEDIA:  Eligible works include oils, acrylics, watercolors, mixed media, pastels, drawings, prints and sculpture in any medium. No photography, video, film, or installations. No mechanically reproduced artwork (computer, printer, giclees, etc.).

DEADLINE:  Received by March 31, 2011

NOTIFICATION:  May 15, 2011

ENTRY FEE:   The fee is $35 for 1 – 3 works. $5 for each additional work up to 10 works total. Entry fees are non-refundable.

AWARD:  A Solo Show

 

COMMISSION:  The gallery will take no commission on any work sold . Work not for sale must be marked “N.F.S.”. No “P.O.R.” sales.

Regatta by Juror Paul ResikaJUROR:  Paul Resika is a highly-respected American painter. Using bold colors and recurring motifs inspired by nature and the world around him, his work merges the representational with the abstract.

At 19, he began studying with Hans Hoffman.

Represented by Lori Bookstein Fine Art in NYC, he has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums around the world including galleries in Madrid, Rome, London and Venice and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, The National Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Academy of Design, where he is an Academician. 

Resika’s numerous awards and honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship.

Have you ever wondered why most women fill the family role of cook?  (although not in my house)  …But in the professional world most Chefs are men?  Me too.  I like being female, despite the issues…even in the South.  Today I’m paying tribute to one of my favorite female Chefs, Cat Cora, who proves gender doesn’t matter…at least in this case.  But we all know that gender does matter, especially in this next call for entries.

Check out this Call for Entries for Gender Matters/Matters of Gender from The Freedman Gallery at Albright College.  The entry fee for up to three images is only $20, and the juror, Judith Tannenbaum,  is spectacular.  Did I mention that this art exhibit is open to entries from BOTH genders?  Take a look…

Ever since Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized the collective Womanhouse project in San Francisco in 1972, as well as Judy Chicago’s 1979 Dinner Party, shows centering on women’s reality have become a staple in galleries nationwide.

Download the Prospectus for Gender Matters/Matters of Gender!Gender Matters/Matters of Gender, expands this tradition to include works by artists of both sexes who work from a consciousness of how gender is reflected in art, how the artist’s gender influences her or his medium, and how gender often affects the circumstances in which the artist creates. This show will include a range of artists who make art which explores sexual identity, evolutions in biological reproduction and art which is sometimes informed by an awareness of gender based craft and traditions.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to everyone. Entries must represent original works of art or design and represent or address the theme in some way.

JUROR: Judith Tannenbaum is the first Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. From 1986 until 2000, she served as curator, associate director, and interim director at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
