ARTIST of the DAY: Mel Prest

"Off Screen" (acrylic & phosphorescent acrylic on panel) 2014 by Mel Prest
“Off Screen” (acrylic & phosphorescent acrylic on panel, 2014) by Mel Prest

“My work shifts and changes in response to light and proximity. I layer conflicting personal references, such as fog colors, music, fabric and thought patterns, to create a new shape-space. I want spontaneity and chance to influence the outcome and direction of each piece.” Mel Prest

As Winter shifts into Spring, I find my creative inspiration also seems to shift in focus and tone, both physical and metaphorical.  I was intrigued to read about the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day Mel Prest and her awakening to the influence of the difference of the quality of light from San Francisco and Brooklyn.  I’m facing a move of nearly 2300 miles; will my work change too?  Does your work change depending on your geographical location?

Let your mind wander to warmer climes with the work of
AAAD Artist of the Day, painter Mel Prest!

DARKER
the better

I usually like to get food as close to the source or source process as possible.  But, I cannot bring myself to love Mexican chocolate.  Most of the world uses a conche for varying lengths of time to incorporate cocoa butter within chocolate.  The longer the processing, the smoother the chocolate.  But Mexican chocolate is still often stone-ground which produces a gritty texture.  I am addicted to dark chocolate, but I want it smoooooth.  This next Call offers the opportunity for you to be dark and either smooth or gritty.  To each their own…

Check out of this Call for Entries from the Arc Studios & Gallery (San Francisco, CA) for Dark. Everyone needs to explore their dark side.  Here’s your chance…

fiasco

I recently reclaimed my kitchen.  Lately, the time I spend outside of my home office, art and music studios is greatly reduced, and now I handle almost ALL of the cooking again.  I’m loving it, but I have become SO territorial.  My husband can make popcorn, and it looks like someone has been killing zombies.  And why, pray tell, if the dishwasher is empty can the dirty dishes not go there instead of on the counter?  Deep breaths; I digress.  This next Call is all about Mayhem; Send them your best…

Check out this Call for Entries from Arc Gallery (San Francisco, CA) for Mayhem. The entry fee is reasonable, and I like this selection of media.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Consequences

please

Merlot sings to me.  But the next morning, I will harm anyone attempting to sing to me.  I am allergic to the tannins after years of enjoying the taste of an earthy glass at art openings.  Now, just one glass makes me feel like I’ve been hit by a bus.  I still have a glass occasionally and deal with the consequences.  This next Call wants to see how you deal with the consequences.  Fabulous…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Arc Gallery (San Francisco, CA) for Consequences.   This is a great space, AND I LOVE this theme.  For those of us that live life with little thought of the consequences, this is pure fantasy.  Take a look…
