hold the SHRIMP

The people with whom I eat most often have lots of food allergies –milk, shellfish, wheat.  So how does a food co-exist with food allergies?  The secret is parallel thinking.  For example, I need to make chili paste for Thai dishes, but my husband is deathly allergic to shellfish.  Who might love Thai food, but naturally wouldn’t eat shrimp?  Vegetarians.  Vegetarian chili paste is made with shiitake mushrooms as the substitute for shrimp. Problem solved.  This next Call is about coexistence, diversity & inclusion on a much larger scale.  Take a look…

Reflections no. 4: Politics (mosaic 56 x 15 x 36 cm) by Peter Vial

“Watch from your gut, listen to your soul” Peter Vial

___

We are, in total, comprised of the pieces and parts of our experience –both those celebrated and those survived.  The mosaic work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day Peter Vial speaks to that patchwork in such a visual way.  This work is so relatable, even though some of it is incredibly large.  I bristle at the ubiquitous Nietzsche what-doesn’t-kill-you quote because it typically comes across as condescension or gaslighting, but Vial’s sculpture is a celebration of life, regardless of circumstance. There IS a difference, and I appreciate that sort of optimistic realism.  No unicorns & rainbows.  Thanks, Peter.

SOUR?

There’s a battle brewing in my house.  We live within 15 miles of two apple orchards.  We only have room for a 5lb. bag of apples each week.  This time of year, Crispins (green/golden apples) get my vote, while my husband seems single-mindedly obsessed with Braeburns (red apples).  I don’t care what color they are, but red apples tend to be sweeter.  We’ve finally taken to trading off weeks.  On my weeks, I get to eat my slightly sour raw green apples; on his weeks, we make apple tarts, pies & crisps out of the red variety.  I’m trying to embrace our differences–like the them of this next Call.  Take a look…
