As people celebrating Independence Day in the U.S. are want to do, my neighbors are grilling all manner of food. In the fifteen feet I walked to my car, I was assaulted by the smell of lighter fluid. What is it about the 4th of July that makes people want to light charcoal on fire and char meats & marshmallows. Is that motivation uniquely American? I made enchiladas; does that make me less American? This next Call is looking for uniquely American work. What will you show them?

JUROR: Ruth Erickson is Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. She co-curated the major exhibition “Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933-1957” with Helen Molesworth and has organized exhibitions of the work of artists Rokni and Ramin Haerizadeh and Ethan Murrow at the ICA/Boston. She is currently at work on the first U.S. survey of Mark Dion’s work to open in 2017. Erickson received her Ph.D. in art history from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014 and has published and presented her writing widely. She serves as a visiting critic at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts and Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

I’m on week 3 of no dishwasher. It isn’t that bad. I was dreading it before the move, but I knew downsizing was important enough to get over the inconvenience. His passion for photographing graffiti gained him publication in outlets such as Brooklyn Street Art Blog, Graffiti Art Magazine & Juxtapoz. Once in Oakland Brock worked as an intern at Hamburger Eyes and as an art handler at White Walls & Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. As a supporter & facilitator of the Bay Area Art community, Brock continues his “extended” art education by working as an art handler at various galleries and museums both locally and out of state.

Today I had a view of 7 U.S. States (Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama) during lunch at Cafe 7, high atop Lookout Mountain. I navigated the short climb through Rock City up to Lover’s Leap and took the obligatory selfie with my husband before being seated at the last available table for late lunch. After a weekend of hard work on the road, I felt a sense of culinary karmic justice when my fried green tomato sandwich arrived at my table topped with Benton’s bacon, avocado puree & chipotle mayonnaise. I am trying to lose weight. Yes, again. I don’t really care about my size. I am trying to get off some meds to make me less tied to doctors & pharmacists, less tied to one place, more able to travel. Tapioca is an other-worldly food. I love the pearls in pudding and starch as a thickener, but I still find it odd. Many people think it is a grain, like wheat, but it is processed as a product of the cassava plant. You may know it as yuca, which can be found from Brazil to Nigeria, but don’t confuse it for yucca, the similar-sounding decorative plant that is related to the Joshua Tree. So, the move is complete. My husband & I have downsized our home by half as the next step in our being completely mobile. I drove from Tennessee through Arkansas to Texas in two days this week, then immediately got on a plane from Dallas to Atlanta and then on to Charlotte. Yes, I AM road weary. All that traveling means a lot of restaurant and convenience foods. I was also traveling with a teenager in tow, so the food choices weren’t always the healthiest. CURATOR: Lisa Gizara has been both a photographer & painter for over thirty years. Educated at the University at Massachusetts, she feels she had no choice but to be an artist. Gizara has extensive exhibition experience including the upcoming exhibit at The SFO Museum from May 18th – September 7th of this year. Gizara’s infrared photographic series “Surreal Escapes” was shown at the Annenberg Space for Photography’s Iris Night Series with a solo show at the G2 Gallery in Venice. A limited edition portfolio of Gizara’s work was placed in the Oscar Nominee Gift Bags, and Jennifer Lawrence and Bruce Dern added Gizara’s work to their private collections.
