CALL for ENTRIES: Overlooked

Learn more about the Overlooked and In-Between exhibit from LA Photo Curator!dim SUM

Have you ever looked at a menu so many times that you quit seeing the obvious offerings?  I get stuck in a rut with menus, ordering the same thing over & over again.  Last week I was standing in my favorite Chinese take-out staring at the back-lit menu when steamed dumplings appeared to me as though they had never been there before. How have I overlooked them for months & months?  This next Call is all about the moments surrounding the pose, the overlooked genius.  What are they missing?

Check out this Call for Entries from L.A. Photo Curator (online) for the Overlooked & In-Between exhibit. $20 entry, no shipping, plus art publication for ALL entrants.   What do you see that others are overlooking? Take a look…

“I’m a huge believer that we often overlook the potential that is right in front of us. This might be because we’re trained by society to focus on what it thinks is important and separate out everything else.  We’re constantly required to go through this kind of exercise in our daily lives and become so used to it that we might be inclined to carry it over to our photography as well. A good example is the posed photograph . . . What about the moments building up to and after the shot.  Don’t these tell an interesting story as well?” –from Jeff Alu via laphotocurator.com

Dissonant Frequencies (chalk pastel) by Kristen Brown

“I am interested in the idea of recollection & how time & moments can feel distorted if one fails to grab hold of any memory landmark.” Kristen Brown

My grandmother lived with Alzheimer’s; her mother lived with Alzheimer’s.  Every lost memory scares the wits out of me. Logically, I know that wasting my lucid years worrying about a feared eventuality of non-lucidity is just the most stupid waste of a lifetime, but some days it gets the better of me.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Kristen Brown, brought me to tears.  It is that blurred perception of reality, that soft focus of memories just out of reach that she captures so well.  Thanks for the perspective.

Sugar is sugar, right?  I don’t think so.  Fried sugar takes me to morning doughnuts in the office.  Melting powdered sugar transports me to Saturday afternoon elephant ears at the flea market.  And spun sugar, spun sugar sends me straight to the state fair standing in line on hard-packed earth waiting for my turn on the Alpine racer.  Each smell is distinct, truly, and each conjures a certain place I hold dear to my heart.  Where is your certain place?  This next Call wants to know.  Explore the possibilities…

Tuna & salmon are sometimes a person’s first introduction to food politics.  The “dolphin safe” label has been appearing on cans of tuna since the 1990s, helping consumers influence industry-wide changes in fishing methods. And, the wild vs. farmed salmon arguments continues to be hotly debated by nutritionists, chefs, foodies & environmentalists.  Contaminants vs. nutrition, sustainability vs. over-fishing or Atlantic vs. Pacific.  If you’re looking for a food fight, there’s always one to be had.  This next Call is all about salmon –no arguing required.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Sugar Rush

Learn more about the Sugar Rush Juried Show from the Sugar Hill Arts Commission!

a SWEET treat

I’ve been hired to write a series of budget dessert recipes that encourage local, organic sourcing.  I try to limit my personal intake of sugar because I am so easily addicted.  As a result, I am struggling to balance the sweetness in these concoctions.  I don’t want to use artificial sweeteners.  Honey is a flavor, not a just a sweetener.  Stevia can come with a bitter aftertaste. Agave nectar has the same glycemic impact as a sugar, so why not just use sugar?  At what point is sweet just sweet?  This next Call is all about the sugar.  Take a look…
