We’ve eaten out a lot more than usual in October. This month is always fraught with an increase in workloads and looming deadlines. As a result, cooking is often pushed to the side. This was the perfect opportunity to try new restaurants. I was looking for comfort and kept finding convenience. I love fries, but they are no substitute if you want a baked potato. THEME: Red “Colors often symbolize a variety of emotions, an artist’s truth, perhaps wild fantasies—from war, power, heat, love, sexuality, anger, and joy to ‘soft’ idealisms—these are but a few examples. Red, in particular here, can be used to draw the viewer closer emotionally in a way which enhances their reaction to the art. My kid came home from college for the weekend. At school, he has access to everything from a wok station to carving board and, what I suspect is a seldom-used, salad bar. CALL for APPLICATIONS: Paris Residency

While most of the U.S. is pumpkin spice obsessed this Fall, I am looking forward to potatoes. Yes, I can get potatoes year ’round, but most of my favorite potato dishes are French-inspired, winter comfort food. Raclette is a firm cheese made from cow’s milk, meant to melted and served over potatoes. Gratin dauphinois is a glorious combination of potatoes, cream & garlic reminiscent of scalloped potatoes. How about hachis parmentier, consisting mashed potatoes & ground beef, layered with cheese? The only thing better than these winter foods would be eating them in Paris. I eat SO MANY tacos. Because I travel so often, I find picking a good restaurant, be it counter service or table, has odds not unlike roulette (37 to 1). But I have consistently had great tacos, nearly everywhere. I rarely meet anyone that doesn’t like a good taco. They are like the great joiners of people. Aside from being bad eating-while-driving food (due to the mess), I can eat a taco almost anywhere with almost anyone. Differences seem to disappear. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the answer to embracing our differences was a simple as the ordering from the local taco truck? Everyone has a food boundary, a line they will not cross, an item they will not even consider consuming. For many of my friends, eating something once alive, meat-poultry-fish, is out of the question. My boundary is a moving target, but I absolutely will not eat things WHILE they are alive. He has over 25 years of artistic, photographic, editing and curating experience. He has been included in many group exhibitions and most recently awarded an Honorary Mention for the Irvine Fine Arts Center’a (IFAC) All Media 2016 exhibition. Stockdale is a portfolio reviewer & workshop leader for L.A. Center for Photography.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

The viewer is invited to decipher metaphor and delve into dreamscapes, to draw meaning or simply to ponder a fantastic, irrational moment.

JUROR: Sarah Sudhoff is a fine-art photographer based in Texas & was the owner of Capsule Gallery. Sarah is a former photo editor of Time magazine and Texas Monthly magazine, and has taught at a number of institutions, including the University of Texas at San Antonio, Trinity University and the Art Institute of San Antonio, among others. Sarah holds an MFA in photography from Parsons The New School for Design in New York City as well as a Bachelors in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. She has won multiple grants including a recent Houston Arts Alliance and a Louis Comfort Tiffany and awards for her photography, and has had many solo exhibitions.

I have never been a big fan of rice. As a child, I only experienced rice as white, short grain & topped with copious amounts of brown gravy. When put up against the family of starches, including potatoes and pasta, rice has always paled in comparison. But lately, I have a newfound respect for the subtleties. Available in a rainbow of hues, this delicate grain makes the best of additions from tomatoes & cumin to mango & orange juice. Rice has emerged as one of my favorites.
