FARMING
of sorts

Fresh sea bass, rainbow beets & marinated mozzarella pearls.  The marinade was herbed with basil from my window sill.  The tartar sauce was accented by chow chow canned by my mother with cucumbers & cabbage grown this year.  The only things not fresh were the olive oil, Himalayan salt & Moroccan red pepper.  Is it Spring? Unfortunately not. just the day after a trip to the farmers market.  In my dream world, I would live within walking distance of a fresh market so that every meal could be this wonderful.  This next Call wants to know what fills you with wonder.  Take a look…

BOTTLE

I drink everyday–bottles & bottles of water.  As my alter ego, I perform 4 to 5 days per week, and on stage, I suck down approximately 24 ounces of water every 45 minutes to keep my voice in check.  So, let’s talk about the bottles.  I know that disposable bottles are not ideal due to the waste issue, but I am paranoid about being able to be certain that I am really getting disposable bottles truly clean.  I have searched for a reusable bottle that has a large enough opening (for proper cleaning) but is both very compact (has to fit on a mic stand) and non-descript (so it doesn’t stick out in every picture).  I am open to recommendations.  In the meantime, here’s an idea of what to do with YOUR water.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Darkroom Gallery (Essex Junction, VT) for H2O. $24 entry. We’re proud our readers have been both shown & awarded at Darkroom. You know you have work for this theme…

CALL for ENTRIES: 2016 Nat’l Juried

fiends

Every last member of my family is a mustard fiend.  There are rarely ever appearances of plain yellow mustard in my house.  Dijon is the mustard of choice for the majority of the family.  And while I have a soft spot for homemade, hot Chinese mustard, I rarely indulge (too lazy to make it).  Brown mustard gets an occasional at bat around here on a whim, but Dijon is our comfort zone, our fall back, our home base if you will.  This next gallery is a little like home base for me.  Please don’t miss this opportunity…

Check out this Call for Entries from The Arts & Culture Alliance for the Nat’l Juried Exhibition of 2016. This is a great arts organization. I have shown work here.  I have juried a show here.  I teach here.  I would love to see your contribution at this opening. Take a look…

EATS

My grocery bill is absurd.  I’m not having dinners of foie gras & truffles.  In fact, most of our meals are vegetable laden.  I try to stop by the farmers market at my local apple orchard.  This week, it was $25 for apples, onions, 4 sweet potatoes, 3 bell peppers & 2 eggplant.  As you might imagine, I then proceeded to spend a fortune at the grocery store to supplement my farmers market finds.  I have a family of only three people + my four-legged child.  I buy in-season, cost-conscious items.  I consider myself a master food shopper, and I can barely hang on to a healthy menu.  How are people without access to locally-grown produce options supposed to avoid eating processed food?  The economics of hunger are devastating.  This next Call is an excellent use of YOUR $25.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from WorkingArtist.org for the $1000 Working Artist Grant/Art Purchase Award.  This may very well be the simplest process for the biggest possible return.  $25 Entry.  Don’t miss this one…

Herbs and spices always tell a meal’s story.  And those stories are shaped by our experiences. Did you know there is an edible form of the dogwood? Cornus Mas, aka Cornelius Cherry Dogwood, produces small ruby red or yellow fruit that makes great jam.  The fruit is a common Iranian snack when salted, and I’ve even heard rumors that a few home brewers have been make wine from the fruit.  I’m thinking that finding the jam might be the easiest start.  In the meantime, let’s celebrate the non-edible dogwood by making art for this next Call.  Take a look…

I spent my childhood as the family cook & server.  I was raised by a single father that couldn’t cook.  I think he realized early on that ANY talent I had in the kitchen would surpass his own.  Even before I could cook with aid of a step stool, I was already setting the table and serving dinner.  I remember serving a plate of spaghetti and tomato sauce to my father, already seated, who quickly discovered you shouldn’t trust a 4 year old to secure a drop leaf table.  Ha.  he called it the “spaghetti incident” until the day he died.  This next Call wants to see how your imagination frames your early memories –food optionalHandle this theme thoughtfully…

Food oddities abound –from century eggs to snake wine. But I find the biggest food oddity is the waste of food in massive, organized food fights.  How do you use tons of food to make a mess when it could be feeding someone?  I don’t understand.  I suppose that some make an argument that food art is also a waste; however, I think the difference in scale might be the defining factor.  I have to admit to loving Kevin Champeny‘s gummy bear chandeliers.  This next Call is looking for oddities, but they don’t have to be food related.  Take a look…
