CALL for ENTRIES: Abstract 3

Learn more about "Abstract 3" from Art-competition.net!FOOD cubed

I recently attended an “abstract” dinner party.  I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting into, and that made me MORE eager to attend, ha.  Upon arrival, I found that every dish was comprised of food cut in an identical manner. I couldn’t tell cubes of potato from turnip or cubes of yellow carrot from summer squash.  From appetizer to entree to dessert, it was an evening of simple foods prepared with time-consuming precision.  I was forced to savor the preparation and intent since nothing was representational of its original form.  Abstract food.  Fascinating. This next Call is all about the abstract as well.  Investigate…

CALL for ENTRIES: Still Life

Learn more about the Still Life exhibit from Art-competition.net!goin’ BANANAS

The landscape of my kitchen counter is changing. My day is incomplete without fresh fruit. While the happy dance of the clementines begins soon, it is otherwise just the banana bunny hop for most of the winter.  I find that most in-season winter produce is either not finger food (cranberries, pomegranates) and/or expensive (guava, kumquat, kiwi).  So clementines & bananas still life it will be.  This next Call invites you to create your own still life.  Orange you glad? CALL for ENTRIES: Hometown

Learn more about the Hometown Exhibit from L.A. Photo Curator!easy being GREEN

I’m still eating local greens even though it is almost November.  Pressure-cooked mustard & collard greens served with a dash of vinegary hot sauce is a rite of passage in the South.  You aren’t really an adult if you don’t love cooked greens, but I’ve never had a taste for anything except creamed spinach, making me feel like the hometown heel.  But, I am newly-enamored of raw greens.  Everyone yearns for Spring lettuce, but my Fall salads of peppery mustard greens highlight my recent menus–still available locally, and they last forever.  What reminds you of your hometown? This Call wants to see your hometown images.  Take a look…

Grocery cashiers aren’t my biggest fans.  They seem to take issue with my lack of packaging.  Why do my two lemons need to be in a plastic bag?  Onions come in their own wrapping.  Why would I protect them from getting dirty when I am just going to peel them? It is the first day of Fall, and I am still nursing my garlic chives from Spring.  I received a gift of a 6″ starter of garlic chives from a farmers market vendor.  And, instead of re-potting, I just sat it in a dish in my window sill and kept clipping and watering.  Miraculously, it is still here –testament to an excellent offering from an excellent farmer.  This next Call is excellent.  Trust me, you won’t regret sending a proposal. Here today, gone tomorrow –ah, transient tomatoes.  Just last week I was lamenting how many ways I could quickly preserve the abundance of tomatoes I brought home from the farmers market.  Now?  I have a handful of tiny Romas left before I have to suffer the grocer’s sad selection of hard, hot house harlots that pass as tomatoes. CALL for ENTRIES: Embracing our Differences

Learn more about the Embracing our Differences exhibit! say CHEESE

I witnessed a cheese fight this week.  Okay, a cheese argument.  I was having dinner in a restaurant and overheard a fairly ugly discussion about sheep’s milk vs. cow’s milk cheeses.  As we finished our dessert, the conversation was headed toward a goat’s milk cheese debate, and fearful that I would be unable to jump in, I promptly exited.  Ridiculous. Given the world’s issues, the differences that separate cheese lovers may be the stupidest thing I have ever heard.  This next debate celebrates our differences, even amongst those passionate about cheese.  Take a look…
