Light makes photographs. When photographers are especially attuned to light, photographs become special, wonderful, even magical. For THE MAGIC OF LIGHT, we seek photographs in which light is the decisive component, transforming the image from ordinary to extraordinary.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists age 18+

MEDIA: Photographs in any style or medium in which light plays a special role.

JUROR: After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

She has exhibited widely including solo shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lishui Festival in China, the Tagomago Gallery in Barcelona and Paris, and the Wallspace Gallery in Seattle and Santa Barbara. In addition, her work is held in a number of museum collections.

Her photographs have been featured in publications including PDN (cover), the PDN Photo Annual, and Silvershotz magazines. In 2012, Aline received the Rising Star Award through the Griffin Museum of Photography for her contributions to the photographic community.

Aline founded and writes the blogzine, Lenscratch, that celebrates a different contemporary photographer each day and offers opportunity for exhibition. Aline has curated and juried exhibitions for a number of galleries, organizations, and on-line magazines. Though she was nominated for The Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 and for The Santa Fe Prize in Photography in 2009 by Center, she considers her children her greatest achievement.

It is partially a gift of the subject itself, how varied the genre of landscape photography can be. Combine the extremes of the land each of us has walked, with the variety of visions each of us chooses to communicate, and we’re bound to witness just how rare our earth can be.

They are looking to see a range of what landscape images can be: macro details to vast panoramas, conceptual narratives, abstractions, document, or relational gestures. They hope to feature varied points of view from every crook and bend, angle and junction, on the globe. With your unique images, Darkroom Gallery will honor the extents of this Rare planet we call Earth.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: It is no wonder William Neill has developed a deep, spiritual connection with nature, being a resident of the Yosemite National Park area since 1977. His award-winning photography has been widely collected and exhibited in museums and galleries.

His work has been published in several books, and a retrospective collection of his finest landscape photographs was published by Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown & Co, in 1997, entitled Landscapes of the Spirit. Several periodicals have published his images, and Neill writes a monthly column “On Landscape”, for Outdoor Photographer magazine. Neill’s corporate clients include: Sony Japan, Bayer Corporation, Canon USA, Nike, Nikon, The Nature Company, and Sony Music/Classical.

Perhaps most important to the task of jurying Rare Earth, is Neill’s extensive experience in close observation of others’ work – he has been an instructor of photography for 32 years. Mr. Neill is looking forward to the opportunity to see your work, for the purpose of curating what will be an awe-inspiring exhibition of landscape photographs.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

I am always on the hunt for great snack foods. I crave a crunchy, salty snack to take with me on the go, but I try not to inhale garbage. Well, I tripped across a fantastic one this weekend. It gave me the same feeling I had watching my brother watch my nephew walk for the first time or watching my Dad watching Rodney Dangerfield or seeing the expressions of the loved ones of returning soldiers. I remember once when my friend’s brother, during the Disco era, got a plaid leisure suit — we were all smiling. JUROR: Susan Barnett will be the juror for “Smile”. When George Harrison arrived in New York for the Beatles’ historic visit he was carrying a Pentax Spotmatic as he descended the airplane’s steps. Susan, then 15, soon bought the same Pentax and began to photograph her everyday life such as it appeared to her.

With a formal education in Art History and Studio Art, she landed a job at Perls Galleries on Madison Avenue, where she worked for twelve years as Associate Director. She handled Picasso, Braque, Leger and Matisse as well as preparing exhibitions and catalogues for Alexander Calder.

Next door to Perls Galleries was Light Gallery, one of the earliest galleries to show Contemporary Photography. There Susan experienced first hand the work of Steven Shore and Lee Friedlandler. Susan currently lives in Manhattan, where she maintains a working studio in Tribeca and sails in Hampton Bays.

AWARDS: 45 to 50 images will be selected for exhibition and a Blurb full color catalogue of the exhibit with all the accepted entries will be available for purchase. Awards are $325 for Juror’s Award, $250 and an exhibition catalogue for Director’s Award, five Honorable Mentions each receiving an exhibition catalogue and $100 for Visitors’ Choice Award.

Prior to launching UPI, Sam was the Director of the New York Photo Festival. In his dual capacity as curator and festival organizer, he has curated photo exhibitions and lectured on current trends in contemporary photography as far afield as China, Greece, and Japan. Over the past few years, Sam has also served as juror, editor, and reviewer for the Prix Pictet, Les Recontres d’Arles, Houston FotoFest, the New York Photo Awards, Artists Wanted, the Google Photography Prize, and the FotoVisura Grant, among others.

Ellen Fleurov is the Executive Director of Silver Eye Center for Photography. The founding curator of photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, Ellen has curated over 85 exhibitions for American and international museums, galleries, and photography festivals. She is a frequent guest lecturer, grants panelist, exhibition juror, and previewer for Houston FotoFest; Photolucida and Critical Mass, Portland, OR; Atlanta Celebrates Photography; Society for Photographic Education; and InVision Festival, among others.

AWARDS:

One (1) International Award Winner receives a solo exhibition at Silver Eye opening mid-January 2013; $3,000 for exhibition-related expenses; an online gallery on Silver Eye’s website (with link to artist website); and media outreach and promotion.

Music dictates food and scheduling in my household. As musicians ourselves, we spend a lot of time grabbing food before a gig. Too much of the wrong type of food (read Mexican), makes for unpleasant belching through most of the first set, but insufficient food (read salad) makes for a grouchy guitarist and missed chords. CALL for ENTRIES:
Encore: A Look at Music

From tribal drumming to radio DJs, advertising jingles to Italian opera, music is important to every culture. Even though it is more accessible than ever before, our thirst for rhythm and melody continues unabated.

Show them your record collections, instruments, and portraits of musicians and fans. Show us stadium concerts, jam sessions, and street performers from distant nations. Most of all, show us what music means to you. For Encore: A Look at Music, The Kiernan Gallery seeks photographs of and inspired by music.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

DEADLINE: November 22, 2012

NOTIFICATION: Approx. 8 days after deadline

ENTRY FEE: 5 for $25, each add’l $5

JUROR: Michelle Egiziano is a Photo and Art Director specializing in celebrity, fashion, portraiture, still life, reportage, and youth/street culture. She served as Photo Editor of SPIN Magazine until its closing in mid-2012. Egiziano has worked with some of the most talented photographers in the commercial photography business. She has been a recipient of a Society of Publication Designers award every year since 2005.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery retains 30% of the sale price as commission.
