of HOME

My mother makes the ugliest chocolate chip cookies.  They look like lumpy rocks, and as a teenager, I always longed for a mom that made Martha-Stewart-worthy sugar cookies decorated with colored sugar and dregees.  But alas, I got a mom that makes ugly cookie that may taste better than anything I have ever put in my mouth!  Home doesn’t always come in the pretty package you dream about, but it is still home.  BTW, the secret to my mom’s cookies is semi-sweet mini chips and walnuts instead of pecans.  This Call asks you to investigate what HOME means to you …good or bad.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Center for Fine Art Photography (Fort Collins, CO) for Home.   This is a beautiful gallery that has repeatedly shown excellent curatorial vision.  Don’t miss an opportunity to show at C4FAP!

I am frugal, or cheap, depending on your viewpoint. I spend more on food each month than I do on rent, electricity and water combined.  Ouch.  One of the ways I combat the food bill is the local farmers’ market.  We have lots of apple orchards in Tennessee, and one of them, Carver’s (pictured left), also features a farmer’s market.  It is my first stop before going to the grocery store.  This next call invites you to share a single image or your agricultural influence.  Make me proud…

Photo Contest

Photographer Paul Mobley traveled the country documenting America’s unsung heroes of industry and agriculture in his book: “American Farmer: Portraits of the Heartland”. What began as a break from his commercial photography soon became a journey which led Mobley down a path of self-discovery with a renewal in his passion for making images.

Mobley’s work for American Farmer was recently optioned for presentation as a feature-length documentary. The film goes deep into our nation’s agricultural heartland to tell the personal stories of the indomitable men and women who literally sustain us all. Dubbed “American Farmer” by its producers, the documentary will launch followed by a national PBS broadcast.

Mobley would like you to share your experiences with the country’s beautiful agriculture, farm, farmer’s market and garden world. Capturing your favorite fall harvest scene, summer fruit stand, farmer’s market or road-side stand, share your view this country’s beautiful landscape, agriculture and harvest. I prefer immediate gratification, be it chocolate or laundry. I simply don’t like to wait.  That is one of the many reasons that I don’t bake chocolate soufflés–because I cannot handle the agony of seeing if it will turn out beautiful and puffed or flat and dreary.  I lose enthusiasm for the whole laundry process during the dry time too (not that I am generally very enthused about it to start with).  Although, I will take soufflé baking over laundry any day of the week.  This next Call is a perfect opportunity for you to contemplate the passage of time, and not just of food and laundry. Think about it…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Kiernan Gallery in Lexington, VA for In Time. This entry fee is low, and I love the concept of contemplating the passage of time, a reflection if you will. Take a look!

In a sense, every photograph is an embodiment of time.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists internationally.

There is boundless beauty in our natural environment, from the intimate view of a blade of grass to the vast panoramic horizon.  We need only show up with our cameras!  How do we translate our personal visions of the natural world, through our photographic tools, and then to our audience?

Each of our relationships to nature is highly personal – they want to see yours.  From the tonal depths of an Ansel Adams expansive environment, to the quiet pictorial gestures of an Edward Steichen moment, to contemporary masters’ views, such as our Juror George DeWolfe, who’s contemplative designs on natural beauty insight envy and inspiration.
