CALL for ENTRIES: Relationship

Learn more about the Relationship exhibit from LA Photo Curator!

CHEESE glorious cheese

I still get email about my relationship with food.  A number of my friends & peers are vegan and are bothered by my cheese obsession.  I dare say the majority of the people I know are vegetarian; therefore, any mention of meat ends in a little hate mail from frenemies.  And I still regularly get the “why do you write about food” question even though we’ve been at it for almost 10 years now.  I am surprised EVERY time.  I forget people read what I write, ha.  This next Call wants to know about your relationship to anything you care to share.  How will you answer this Call?

Check out this Call from L.A. Photo Curator (online) for the Relationship exhibit. $20 entry, no shipping, plus art publication for ALL entrants.   $20 entry and a curatorial them to which everyone can relate.  Take a look…

FRUIT bowl

My husband has been throwing new bowls for me. (He’s a commercial potter.) I now have bowls of fruit and yarn and onions and paper clips.  Because I can’t decide on a glaze color, he keeps throwing while I cannot part with any of them.  Now it appears that all things in my house have to be stored in bowls.  I’m am currently rationalizing it as a study in perpetual still life.  This next Call encourages a far broader interpretation of still life than fruit in a bowl.  Send them your best…

THEME:  Still Life 2.0. “From the Greco-Roman art, mostly depicting offerings for the gods, to the Dutch masters of the 16th and 17th centuries, to the vanitas and, later on, to impressionism and cubism, still lifes have always been providing keys to understanding cultures of different eras and regions, as well as the psyche of each individual artist. Forget about fruits and flowers or bowls and skulls. Or not. Introduce us to your world by arranging and displaying your updated version of still life. Invite us into your fears, desires, dreams and attachments. just NUTS

I shop from a half-dozen grocery stores. Because all but one is out of town, my menu is often reflected in my travels for the week.  Thai food only shows up on the table when I make it 30 miles out to get natural peanut butter.  I mean, the local grocer has something called “natural”, but I think we can agree that just because something CAN be eaten doesn’t mean it SHOULD be eaten –natural or not.  However, I do love the junky peanut butter cereal available everywhere that is neither natural nor contains actual peanut butter.  Hi, my name is Rachel, and I’m a food snob hypocrite.  It’s complicated.  This next Call is all about our relationship to the natural world.  I can’t wait to see this one…

THEME:  Natural Encounters. We now know that 60% of primate species are threatened with extinction, as are hundreds of other species. In the the Arctic, large areas of permafrost are melting, and an ice swath the size of Delaware is separating in Antarctica. These are signposts for a hopeless future for our planet, and it’s our responsibility as artists to call attention to, and alter, this course.  Please submit images that address the connection and interdependence between humans and the natural world. The images may or may not be documentary. I’m looking for emotional impact as well as a strong composition. Learn more about the Alternative Techniques Call from LA Photo Curator! a little LEMON or LIME

During the winter, I’m grateful for the extra heat of the oven after lunch or dinner.  I usually leave the oven door open until it reaches room temp.  However, come Summer, or even Spring for that matter, I will start looking for alternative ways to cook without having to combat the heat of the oven for the rest of the day.  Ceviche may be the simplest of them all.  Ceviche is a method of cooking fish or seafood in citrus juice alone –without heat.  It doesn’t produce the flaky fish you get from the oven, but if you’re a fan of sushi, you’ll love ceviche.  This next Call is all about Aternative Techniques.  I can’t wait to see this exhibit…

I am the queen of comfort food.  I know that the secret to award-winning mac ‘n’ cheese is Dijon mustard. HOME again

I have downtown déjà vu.  Surely you’ve been in a situation that feels overwhelmingly familiar but that you know for certain you’ve never previously encountered.  Have you walked down a street and thought, “have I been here before”?  It happens to me often, but I’ve finally put my finger on it.  It always happens to me in small downtowns.  The street level experience of downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has, at its hearts, abiding similarities to Troy, New York, and Savannah, Georgia and even the Old City in Knoxville, TN.  I don’t have to have same food vendor or restaurant experience to feel “at home” away from home. It can be comforting, but it also makes escaping reality more complicated.  This next Call is interested in that same direct-from-the-sidewalk experience, no déjà vu necessary.  Take a look…

THEME:  Street Shooting. “What is street photography? It is candid moments on the street or in any other public place such a grocery store, a mall, or a park. It is chance encounters and random incidents in public places. Street photography generally focuses on people and everyday life and shares the same ethics as photojournalism and documentary photography, meaning nothing is set up or changed in the digital darkroom. Street portraits are also considered to be street photography and like photojournalism, portraits are the only type of photograph that can be set up. Some street photographers shoot in an artful way, with shadows and light. Others shoot like a newspaper photographer, concentrating on moments among people on the street. Don’t just photograph someone walking down the sidewalk. The genre is saturated with these images. Look for unusual locations and aesthetically pleasing backgrounds. The background content is as important as the subject. The combination of the two makes the picture. Do not photograph anyone less fortunate than yourself, meaning no photos of homeless people unless you can make a strong social statement.”

DEADLINE: December 13, 2017 (Midnight PST)

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3. 20% of artist fees go to 2 charities –½ to the curator’s choice of charity & ½ goes to the 1st place winner’s choice.  Julia Dean has chosen the SPARK program.

For the past six years, street shooting in downtown Los Angeles has been her primary focus.  Julia was selected for a book about to be produced by Acuity Press and PDN magazine featuring 20 street shooters around the world.  Julia received a B.S. in photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology & a M.A. in journalism at the University of Nebraska.

teenage mutant ninja CHICKENS

My house smells like tom kha gai, a Thai coconut soup with chicken.  It is my personal chicken-noodle equivalent.  My husband bought chicken breast, and I weighed out the pound I needed.  Chicken is ingrained in the food vocabulary of the meat-eating population of the U.S.  We feed our children nuggets & tenders and our families buffalo wings & whole roasters.  But today, my one pound of chicken consisted of ONE boneless breast.  Regardless of how you feel about the ethical, environmental or health issues surrounding meat, you should be afraid of any chicken that has two 1lb. breasts, right?  Isn’t that chicken destined to lead an uprising against factory farmers?  Dude.  If chicken is a part of our food vernacular, then these mutant chickens are the trendy slang that I will be happy to see fade.  This next Call is about the vernacular of you and yours.  Take a look…

“I’d like the photographers to take a picture that has the elements of a snapshot, something you might find at a flea market, while at the same time including an aspect of their own aesthetic.” –from Paul Kopeikin via laphotocurator.com

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography

THEME:  Vernacular.  Kopeikin came up with this theme as just having seen the Walker Evans retrospective at SFMOMA, where Evans work, American vernacular, or the language of everyday life found in roadside attractions, postcards, storefronts, and signage across the country stuck out in his memory.  Over five decades, Evans’s powerful images responded to and reflected the spirit, suffering, and fortitude of a nation. His iconic images of the Great Depression and his postwar photo essays depicting shop window displays, urban architecture, and junked automobiles defined a new documentary style that continues to influence generations of artists.  This call is not just about American vernacular. It’s about vernacular in all countries.

My kid came home from college for the weekend.  At school, he has access to everything from a wok station to carving board and, what I suspect is a seldom-used, salad bar.  I asked him if he wanted anything special for dinner, and his answer was “asparagus”.  When pushed for a reason, he said, “It doesn’t taste the same anywhere else.”  I suppose family is like that, nothing special to most of the world, but uniquely special to each of us –for better or worse.  This next call wants your views on family.  Show them what you’ve got…
