Enter the Small Plates Exhibit at The Balcony in Knoxville, TN sponsored by AAAD!ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists.  You may notice that we have eliminated the Featured Artist program in an effort to publish more of the ART in our name, Art & Art Deadlines.  If you have an interest in being an Artist of the Day, we want to hear from you!  Look in the juror section for an add’l bonus!

MEDIA:  Are we including all the media Calls you want?  Am I missing something?  Am I under-representing your media?  Please tell me.  I largely post at the request of jurors and gallerists, so sometimes I unintentionally wear blinders.

DEADLINE:  April 18, 2016.  AAAD has a #smallworks (9×12 or smaller) Call out with an April 18th deadline, SMALL PLATES: A Response to Hunger.  $5 Entry & open to prints. Please enter so that we can provide more show opportunities in the future!

NOTIFICATION:  Now.  Tell me what you need from AAAD.  We have incorporated a lot of changes over the years based on readers’ suggestions.  And, I am open to more.  The site will undergo some dramatic aesthetic changes and alterations to the formatting of posts and subscriptions, and you can help shape that process.  The resources will remain the same, and you’re simply stuck with the food references.  But, I’m open to hearing you.  Email me, leave a comment on the post (link to comments at top) or reply to your subscription email.  Any way you wanna…

(Rachel) Gibson, continues to be the Editor.  Me.  Publication has been a bit sporadic lately because of events that left my family stranded in rural Virginia for a while.  Dramatic, I know.  I try not to publish personal posts often.  But you were so kind when I lost my father a few years ago, that I thought I would share.  Here’s the whole #saveERNIE story.  So many of you ask me if there is anything you can do to help out at AAAD.  There is.  Instead of paying a $5 Artist of the Day fee or the $15 Artist to Love fee, donate $10 to #saveERNIE, I will enter you for FREE in both the Artist of the Day competition & Artist to Love directory.  Plus, you have a chance to win a house concert.  Time runs out Monday, August 18th, so hurry.

CALL for ENTRIES: Garbage

It isn’t about how little you spend; it is about how little you throw away.  That is the key to keeping our household food budget on track.  We throw very little away.  When celery goes limp or carrots dry out, we add them to the collection of chicken bones in the freezer to make stock.  I haven’t purchased broth or stock in years.  A little cream  makes a whole new meal from left overs.  Overly ripe fruits make fantastic preserves, coulees, granitas & trail mix.  Stale bread makes great croutons.  Don’t let throwing things away become the habit, recycle or re-use or re-invent it–even food.  This next Call wants your insight on garbage re-use & reduction.  Love this one…

Today we swim in garbage.  The world we live in is over populated, over polluted, over everything.  How we deal with garbage needs a new approach, a new way of dealing with this overgrowing problem. Recycling is one of the possibilities. But how do we view garbage?  How we use it, re-use it and what our personal relationship towards it is–those are the questions to be asked. 

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  All 4″ x 6″ media (10cm x 15cm) that can be mailed

DEADLINE:  Received by September 21, 2015

NOTIFICATION:  All hung.  The works will be exhibited in an exhibition space at the Goriska regional museum on a Kromberk Castle, online and an online catalog will be made for this purpose.

ENTRY FEE:  None (but no return of work either)

AWARDS:  1st Award  100€ 2nd Award 50€ (54.32USD) & 3rd Award 50€ (54.32USD).  Award winners will be announced in December 2015.

Food marks most of the special occasions in my life from birthdays and vacations to weddings and anniversaries.  Some of you are aware that my husband Jon and I sing together as the Pea Pickin’ Hearts, and food often makes our gigs memorable too.  One of my favorite gigs includes the Spring & Fall Gatherings at the Cliff Dwellers Gallery, where we sing on the front porch and are rewarded with a pea-themed lunch.  This next Call is a perfect fit for the ladies of the Cliff Dwellers, and hopefully it will be a fit for you too…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Greater Denton Arts Council for the 2012 Materials Hard & Soft Contemporary Craft Exhibition at the Meadows Gallery, Center for the Visual Arts, Denton, TX.  Over $5000 in Awards will be given away!

Learn more about the Materials Hard and Soft show!ELIGIBILITY:  Artists must reside in the United States or its possessions.

MEDIA:  Works produced in any of the craft media: clay, fiber, glass, metal, paper, wood, or any combination of craft media, are acceptable. Entries must be the complete work of the submitting artist. Kits or commercially designed works will not be accepted. All work must have been completed within the past two years and not previously exhibited in the Center for the Visual Arts.

JUROR:  Monica Moses became editor in chief of American Craft magazine in June 2010.

Moses brings to that role 20 years’ experience in media organizations as an editor, designer, and creative director – as well as a lifetime of passion for the visual arts. Moses is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in English of St. Olaf College and has a master’s degree in visual communication from the University of Minnesota. 

See the 2011 Materials Hard and Soft winners!Moses was on the visual faculty of the world’s leading training institution for mid-career journalists, the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, for four years and served as a Pulitzer Prize juror in photography in 2006. When she is not editing the magazine, Moses paints, makes jewelry, works with handmade paper, and dabbles in clay.

AWARDS:  GDAC will provide $5,000 in awards. Winners will be determined by the juror, on site, after the accepted works are received at the Center for the Visual Arts.

SALES:  A 30% commission will be retained from all work sold during the exhibition. Works which are not for sale must be clearly marked as such.
