My husband is a tea drinker, and it is my fault. So, I don’t like the smell of brewed coffee. (I hear the nasty emails being pecked out on keyboards across the world.) I haven’t drank a cup of coffee in 18+ years. I think brewed coffee smells like skunk spray. No joke. So for a long time, my husband used a French press because the odor was lessened. Six Summit Gallery presents “Illumination of Imagination” their 3rd Annual Holiday Art Celebration, juried by David T Wenzel. Thousands of people descend upon their little village the first Saturday of every December. They hope you will join this special art exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists, and despite the title and the support of breast cancer awareness, the theme is wide in content.

MEDIA: Original work in oil, water color, pastel, acrylic, mixed media, collage, graphics, photography, sculpture. Photo-mechanical reproductions of original work (giclee prints) are not eligible.

JUROR: David T. Wenzel is an illustrator and children’s book artist. He is best known for his visualization of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, illustrated in graphic novel format. The Hobbit, Graphic Novel is one of the most successful graphic format adaptations of a piece of classic literature David has worked on Kingdom of the Dwarves, written by Robb Walsh, published by Centaur Books.

David has left his artistic mark on a variety of non-book related projects including puzzles, greeting cards, and two entire miniature kingdoms of collectible figurines. Many may remember him from the days when he worked on The Avengers for Marvels Comics.

SALES: Gallery receives 35% on accepted sold work. 5% of sales will be reserved for charity. Artists will receive 60% of sales.

JUROR: For over 30 years, Craig Nelson has been depicting figures landscapes and various environments in rich vibrant oils. His passion for the subjects relates directly to his brush work, weaving mood and emotion into each work of art.

After graduating from Art Center College of Design with distinction, Craig began his career working in Los Angeles for recording companies and motion picture studios, creating portraits and other subjects with strict deadlines. Craig’s countless movie posters include “The Cowboys”, “Slapshot”, and “Homeward Bound” among many others. His album cover credits include, “Sammy Davis Jr. Live”, “Rick Nelson, Country” and “Natalie Cole, Thankful” along with many more.

In 1974 Craig began teaching at Art Center College of Design and for the past 13 years has been sharing his knowledge at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco where he is Director of Fine Art, Drawing and Painting.

Craig teaches two to three workshops a year which have gained in popularity attracting students from all over the United States. His annual January workshop held at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California is in its 24th year.

Zohn’s previous work was with Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Reynolda House Museum of American Art and Albany Museum of Art in Georgia. Ms. Miller Zohn served as Curator of Education at the Columbus Museum for six years before moving to her current position in 2007.

Zohn is a contributing author for American Art in the Columbus Museum: Painting, Sculpture and Decorative Arts and to the forthcoming The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture, Vol. 20, Art and Architecture.

Heart smart foods have become the norm in my house. I have scary-low blood pressure, and my doc says it makes me far less likely to have a heart attack or stroke. However, my husband is one of those string beans that can consume 5000 calories per day. If Captain Consumption is going to grow old with me, the meats are going to have to be lean, the vegetables plentiful, whole grains a constant and cheese…just an occasional indulgence. These days Kim also feels at home painting in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming and Texas. Kim received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kansas State University in 1992.

Kim’s work has been featured in numerous magazine articles. She has exhibited in many prestigious national competitions, winning many awards, including Best of Show at the 2010 Nomades del Arte National Invitational Exhibit held at Southwest Gallery. Kim has also particpated in museum shows in Arizona, Wyoming, Montana and Oklahoma.

Surprised!

Salt and pepper are the basics of all seasoning. Given nothing else, you can still do wonders with this pair. However, while menu-planning for an upcoming cabin vacation with my family, I have had to take sodium content into mind for my mother’s sake. WOW! What an eye opener. One-half a frozen average-size pepperoni pizza (3 slices of 6) has her recommended sodium intake for 2.5 days. I suppose that too much of a good thing really does exist. I typically only post once per day. Any more smacks of double-dipping of your time and inbox space. I get notified everytime someone unsubscribes from this blog, and I am sincerely sorry when I found out that an artist has decided that AAAD isn’t something they want or need or have time for. So, I am self-conscious about double-dipping… except in ice cream, of course.

So why double-dip today? Well, I am also self-conscious about straying too far from bringing you the art deadlines and opportunities that are the whole purpose of this blog. In 3rd grade, I took “European Art Lessons” for one hour per week. They weren’t like sauer kraut, foie gras or kidney pie that immediately hint at their origin. I never figured out exactly what made the lessons European, but I did learn if you overwork soft pastels, you will end up with a brown mess. They were worth their cost in wiener schnitzel. I hope this next Call will inspire you to create some un-brown work.

JUROR OF SECLECTION: Wende Caporale is a nationally recognized leading pastel and oil portrait artist. Her special ability for capturing likenesses of children and families has brought her much acclaim including the New York Times praising Wende as a leader in the field.

Wende is the author of the book Painting Children’s Portraits in Pastel which has been selling worldwide since its publication in 2001.

In addition, her work has been featured in American Artist, International Artist, The Pastel Journal, Portrait Highlights and Pastel Artist International magazines. Wende’s work has been shown in museums and national exhibitions, garnering awards and honors including a designation of Master Pastelist from the Pastel Society of America.

JUROR OF AWARDS: Lucy Petrie is recognized primarily for her highly realistic images, each marked by vivid color and intensity. Dr. Petrie studied art and was selected for her first juried show in 2004.

Since 2004, she has won numerous awards in national and international competitions, including many at the Northeast National Pastel Exhibition, for which her work has been selected in all six previous years.

In 2007, Lucy was elected to Pastel Society of America signature membership, and in 2009 Lucy received the Master Circle Award from the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS). Her paintings have appeared in The Pastel Journal, American Artist and more. “Painting is about learning how to see and using that skill to unravel the mystery of representing what’s seen on the paper.
