I have made hundreds of grilled cheese sandwiches.  I have entered hundreds of art shows.  I have made hundreds of canapes and attended hundreds of opening night receptions.  I believe that the 100 mark is to be celebrated.  This blog will soon celebrate its 300th post.  This next Call for Entries should put you in the mood to celebrate.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists.  One or two works may be submitted.  Work must not have been previously shown at the CAFA or the Mystic Arts Center.  If you are not in the United States:  They do not currently have capability for converting currency or receiving international shipments.  But, if you have a contact within the US, you can work through them.

MEDIA:  All fine arts media: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics.

DEADLINE:  March 25, 2011 is the mail in deadline.  May 22 and 23, 2011 is the hand-delivery deadline.  Artists may enter up to two works.  Entries will be received Sunday, May 22 and Monday, May 23, 11AM–5PM at the Mystic Arts Center Inc., 9 Water St. Mystic, CT 06355.

Anne von Stuelpnagel
is Director of Exhibitions at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut; Since 1995 she has been responsible for the design of the 12-14 exhibitions per year of the Museum; Having worked at the Bruce Museum since 1980, her responsibilities included art, history, anthropology, and science.  She received her BFA from Blocherer School of Fine Art and Applied Sciences, in Munich, Germany with a Major in painting and a Minor in Interior Design.  Anne initiated and has carried out, for many years, the Outdoor Art Show of the Bruce Museum.  After settling in the United States, in 1977, she studied printmaking and has since worked primarily as a printmaker.

I typically only post once per day.  Any more smacks of double-dipping of your time and inbox space.  I get notified everytime someone unsubscribes from this blog, and I am sincerely sorry when I found out that an artist has decided that AAAD isn’t something they want or need or have time for.  So, I am self-conscious about double-dipping… except in ice cream, of course.

So why double-dip today?  Well, I am also self-conscious about straying too far from bringing you the art deadlines and opportunities that are the whole purpose of this blog.  Last Monday I posted a housekeeping blog, earlier this morning I posted the Artist of the Year blog, and tommorrow I unveil the first Featured Artist of 2011.  That is three non-deadline posts in 8 days.  I just have to break it up with a little opportunity!

I’m told the Super Bowl is in January.  I say, “I’m told” because a football would have to hit me square between the eyes to make me aware of when the season begins or ends for any sport.  Yep, I’m just not that girl.  Interestingly enough, the idea of the Super Bowl does conjure image of very specific foods for me despite the fact that I’ve never been to a Super Bowl party.  Hmmmm… Chicken Wings anyone?

SCROLL BOWL V will be the featured event at The 22 Magazine Launch Party, on April 2nd, 2011.  Harnessing the ancient power of scroll storytelling, some of world’s finest creators gather to show off their work on large and small rolls of parchment.  Scroll art is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, and the folks at The 22 Magazine want to make the experience of viewing a scroll more accessible to everyday life.

Check out the Scrollie Viewer on YouTube!MEDIA:  There are many different ways to approach art on scrolls, and they ask artists to push those limits-linear storytelling to abstract ideas.

Larger format works are shown on their huge SCROLLIE VIEWER, but they also appreciate smaller format or long scrolls that hang on the wall.  Solo, group collaborations, video or performance pieces are acceptable.  How each artist attacks the “page” is what makes these events fun.

WHERE:  The Scroll Bowl V will take place at Frost Street Art Space in Williamsburg (Brooklyn), an exciting new gallery and screening venue that provides live online streaming of events!  Click here for videos of the space.

BUFFALO…in brief.

When you think of Colorado and food, does it conjure images of snow bunnies and hot chocolate?  Then clearly you need to revisit Colorado.  When I think of Colorado, I think of Buffalo Burgers.  Buffalo burgers, once a fringe food, have now found their place in everyday fare.   In South Central Colorado, the buffalo burgers are unmatched.  I wonder if there’s any chance buffalo will be on the menu at this next exhibit’s opening night…

Check out this Call for Entries for The Arts Center’s 14th National Juried & Invited Contemporary Exhibition at the Center for the Arts in Western Colorado.  The entry fee is low, and I like the idea of a mix of invited and juried artists…that usually means a built in crowd for opening night.  Take a look…

JUROR: Michael Chavez is the Curator of Exhibitions and Education at Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colorado.  He has a BFA in sculpture from the University of Wyoming and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Kansas. Over the past 16 years he has worked at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Spencer Museum of Art and the University of Wyoming Art Museum.  In addition to curatorial duties, Chavez is active in the Colorado art community serving on public art committees and judging several exhibitions for Colorado’s cultural institutions.  (continues below)

Have you ever wondered why most women fill the family role of cook?  (although not in my house)  …But in the professional world most Chefs are men?  Me too.  I like being female, despite the issues…even in the South.  Today I’m paying tribute to one of my favorite female Chefs, Cat Cora, who proves gender doesn’t matter…at least in this case.  But we all know that gender does matter, especially in this next call for entries.

English Pointers by Juror Joseph SulkowskiJUROR:  Joseph H. Sulkowski began his studies as a painter at America’s oldest art school, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts founded in 1809. He then continued and finished his studies after five years at the venerable Art Students League of New York. There, he met his greatest influence and mentor Frank Mason, the foremost authority on the principles and techniques of the Old Masters, and became, in the very traditional sense of the word, his apprentice.

Mr. Sulkowski has received numerous awards including the AAPL Grand National Award, the Grumbacher Gold Medallion Award and the Best in Show Award at the Art in the Mountains exhibition sponsored by Southwest Art magazine. He is a signature member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists, the National Society of Mural Painters, the National Arts Club, the American Artists Professional League, and he is a Life Member of the Art Students League of New York.

My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York.  So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider.  Thanks to this next call, it can now remind me of phenomenal art opportunities as well!

Roswell, New Mexico

Well known by artists as the “Gift of Time”, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program was established in 1967 to provide gifted studio based visual artists with the unique opportunity to concentrate on their work in a supportive, collegial environment for a whole year. This “gift of time” allows artists to work without distraction in an effort to break new ground and focus on individual goals.

CURRENT DEADLINE: December 1, 2010 

MEDIA: In-residence grants are offered to artists involved in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation and other fine art media. Grants are not made in the disciplines of performance art or production crafts. 

HOUSING & STUDIO FACILITIES: The studios are large, open spaces that measure approximately 20’x25’x10′. These areas are well-lighted and convertible to the artist’s requirements within reason. The printmaking facility is a small, fully operational studio – basically lithographic/etching in nature. 

Artists are housed in a complex of six houses and 10 studios located on forty acres of land. Each artist is provided with a house that can amply accommodate either a single person or a family. Rent, utilities (except telephone), repairs and maintenance costs are borne by the Program. Houses are furnished with major furniture items, appliances and utensils. (continued below)

STIPEND:  A stipend, or living allowance, of $800 per month is offered along with $100 per month for every dependent living with the grantee. Currently, the cost of art materials is borne by the grantee.
