SEASON

It is ramp season in the Smoky Mountains.  I am thrilled to have a locally-grown, fresh vegetable of any sort after the winter of snow & ice we just endured–even if it gives us all dragon breath.  If you aren’t familiar, ramps are spring onions with a strong garlic smell and onion flavor.  They are called “spring leeks” elsewhere.  We’re using them in salads, soups, casseroles and atop nearly every dish consumed in my house right now.  You name it, we’re finding a way to eat them.  Another sign of Spring is this next Call.  Maybe this one is for you…

Check out this Call for Entries from Oil Painters of America (OPA) for their Spring Online Showcase. $14 entry & huge awards.  You DO have to be a member ($60), but great benefits exist for oil painters.  Take a look…

CUT YOU

I used to be the queen of the hand cut garnish and/or decorative knife skills.  I think tournée-cut potatoes simply taste better; I do.  But, my recent cooking laziness has forced me to return to a more fresh-cut approach, like carambola (star fruit).  I’ve looked at them decoratively for so many years, I’d forgotten how delicious they really are.  I have not forgotten how delicious the magazine hosting this next Call is however.  I’m thrilled to have them as a sponsor, and I wash bowled over when I received my last hard copy.  Simply beautiful (and tasty)

Grocery shopping is often a small world experience for me.  I’ll be thinking of having teriyaki wings, and my husband will come home with the chicken.  Or, I’ll be dreaming of pineapple-infused rice for my salmon, and my stop at the grocery store with produce a beautifully ripe pineapple that just happens to be on sale.  I’m just lucky that way, I suppose.  Just the other day, I was thinking of a couple of pieces I saw in someone’s personal art collection, and what do you know–the juror pops up in this call.  It’s a small world…

SUNNY SIDE UP
hold the salsa

Don’t throw tomatoes.  I never search my own blog history before I write these segues.  So unknown to me, I might be contradicting/repeating myself, but I am always being sincere–I swear.  Having said that, I remember having written about this topic many times.  That’s right, it is time for what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food.  This week, I’m thinking I would be an egg.  Really.  They are ultimate in adaptive foods.  They are in everything from cookies to lasagna.  My family OF THREE now eats approximately 3 dozen a week.  Really.  This episode of what-would-I-be-if-I-were-food was brought to you be this self-portrait Call–the ultimate what-would-I-be-if-I-had-only-one-shot-to-show-the-world experience.  Enough hyphens; I digress…

Check out this Call for Entries from the ENMU Runnels Gallery for Me, Myself & I, a self-portrait show.  No entry fee, and this is a great institution.  Take a look…

Me, Myself & I

Social, cultural, political, gender, age and sexual orientation are part of our identities as individuals. Each of these elements play a part in how we identify within various constructs such as family, workforce, community and greater society.

The aim of this exhibition is to feature self-portraits that best depict our own individual identity and the ability to be a camellia of uniqueness or to fit within the statuesque.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Must be 8” x 10”. No landscapes orientations accepted. B&W or color photography, digital photography or illustrations, and photos or scanned replications of drawings, paintings or sculptures. Self-portraits will not be returned; do not submit original prints/artwork.

May 1, 2014

NOTIFICATION:  “All artists will be featured. Artists are welcome to submit as many self-portraits as they wish; however, the gallery can only guarantee a minimum of six photos per artist will be displayed. If space permits, more photos will be used from each submitting artist.” — quoted from from the Me, Myself & I prospectus

ENTRY FEE:  No fee to enter

SALES:  Artwork will not be sold. (or returned)

Editor’s Note:  According the prospectus, this is a National Juried exhibit; however, it also claims to be open to ANY artist, and no juror is listed.  The quote above indicates it is a form of all-hung show.  So, my guess is it is only juried for awards.  However, the awards are not defined in the prospectus either.  Normally I wouldn’t publish a Call without getting all of these questions answered…but I  HAVE shown at this gallery myself and it was a FANTASTIC experience.  If you’re looking for a line on your resume, this is a great academic gallery with an historically great curatorial vision.

Today I spied organic alphabet soup in the grocery store.  There is some humor to be found in the idea that someone invested in eating organically would also want a food so tortured & processed that it can spell out words.  And, I don’t believe anyone is REALLY teaching their children to read with soup.  So do we really need to communicate with food, literally, or am I just a huge hypocrite for constantly preach about the transformative & communicative power of food?  Okay, I’m a hypocrite, ha.  But, this next Call speaks to the power of text; however, I suspect they are not searching for alphabet pasta mosaics.  Check out this fantastic venue…
