Love is a powerful affection or personal attachment and comes in a variety of forms, which can encompass romantic, sexual, platonic, narcissistic, or even religious feelings or attitudes. And sometimes love and lust overlap. What images capture these emotions for you?

JUROR: After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

She has exhibited widely. Aline founded and writes the blogzine, Lenscratch, that celebrates a different contemporary photographer each day and offers opportunity for exhibition. She has been the Gallery Editor for Light Leaks Magazine, is a contributing writer for Diffusion, has written book reviews for photoeye, and has provided the forwards for artist’s books by Tom Chambers, Flash Forward 12, Robert Rutoed, amongst others.

EXTENDED DEADLINE: Love + Lust

of my heart

Second chances make the world go round. For years I professed a hate for beets and asparagus. I LOVE almost everything edible, but I had bad experiences with these two. In hindsight, my asparagus experience had been of the gray canned variety, and my beets experience had been with the canned pickled variety as a child. I was convinced a while ago to retry FRESH asparagus and now I am addicted. I had a roasted beet and goat cheese salad in Arizona two years ago, and now I keep beets on hand at all times. I am fascinated by idea of aphrodisiac foods. For the record, ALL foods are aphrodisiacs in my house, ha. Food is always a sensual experience for us, but I, as you know, have issues. I enjoy unexpected pairings of food and wine. I am addicted to blackberries and raspberries. I dare say that I would consume them at EVERY meal if I was financially able to afford them that often. And, many of you know that I am addicted to my BlackBerry as well. I never could be convinced to make the leap to iPhone and have remained jealous of the photo apps available. Until now… I have found a couple of great photo apps for Blackberry, and my shots are getting better by the day as a result. I wonder if a cell phone pic could take the cover of this Juried Book Competition featured in this Call for Entries? Hmmm… sounds like a challenge.

JUROR: As founder and director of Vision Quest Photo Workshops, Douglas Beasley provides workshops that emphasize personal expression and creative vision over the mechanics of camera use. He believes in helping each student find their voice rather than making pretty pictures. Much of his personal work, including Sacred Sites of the Lakota, Disappearing Green Space, Silent Witness: Genocide and the Landscape, Sacred Places and Earth Meets Spirit are supported by grants and commissions and have been widely exhibited and collected. His second book Earth Meets Spirit will be coming out in late 2010. Doug continues to explore the notion of what is sacred in his photography and in his life. He lives in a passive solar home surrounded by trees in Saint Paul, MN. When not out traveling the world he can be found tending his Japanese gardens or enjoying a strong cup of coffee while listening to loud music. Personal heroes include Jimi Hendrix, the Dalai Lama and whoever invented the espresso machine.
