OPEN CALL: 2014 at the Firehouse

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!5-ALARM

In the game of word association, extreme food edition, the word “firehouse” is always followed by “chili”.  Where I live, the fire department ALWAYS wins an award at the Annual Chili Cookoff, and it has just become a natural association for me.  This next Call is all about the Firehouse and nothing about the chili, although it does take ANY MEDIA.  Take a look…

Check out this Open Call from the Firehouse Art Center for the 2014 Season.  This is a great opportunity for a solo show and to become a member of a great organization as well.  Investigate this possibility…

I just found out my stove won’t go below 225°.  I was preparing to roast chickpeas instead of drying them in my dehydrator.  But, I usually slow roast them at 200°.  Hmph.  Those 25 degrees make a difference.  You know what I mean.  Haven’t you ever split the difference when you had to bake two things at two different temperatures at the same time?  Something usually suffers.  I’ve eaten many a soggy crust pizza because of this dilemma.  Well this next Call comes from a gallery whose very name involves a melting point reference.  Intrigued?

Check out this Call for Entries from Eutectic Gallery (Portland, OR) for ceramic work.  The fee is fairly standard, but they take both single artists AND pairs.  Take a look…

I am now officially one of those old codgers that complain about the price of potatoes to the grocery cashier and bitch about the prices of soft drinks to my waitress.  Ugh.  I cannot believe I have turned into THAT person, but I have.  My Dad would be so proud.  But, I don’t feel alone due to the number of artists I listen to lament the price of entry fees.  This next Call doesn’t have one.  Woohoo!

power

Never underestimate the power of food.  Grapefruit is now known to interfere with over 70 medications, and many antibiotics have warnings about orange juice.  And I am certain that somewhere there are geneticists trying to modify both of these fruits to fix the problem–which is scary, but I digress.  The world is your buffet, but you have to make your choices carefully.  This next Call looks like a good call to me.   But, take a look for yourself…

CALL for ENTRIES: Gold

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!GOLDEN
taters

Gold has been used to adorn everything, including food, for years.  At least once per month, some entertainment magazine show features a sundae with gold leaf that costs $1500+, but there are cheaper ways too, like edible spray paints.  But personally, I choose my golden food in a well-roasted Yukon gold potato.  Or maybe a baked chicken.  This next Call wants to see your take on all things golden.  The deadline is a week away…so hurry.

Check out this Call for Entries from Beers Lambert (London) for the Gold exhibit.  There is no entry fee, and many of you living stateside probably still need an international show on your resume.  Take a look…

Read the Full Call from Beers Lambert! CALL for ENTRIES:  Gold

Gold remains an enigma within the history of art and culture, and while much has been analyzed regarding its use, existence, and symbolism in art and culture, any historical discourse regarding the use of gold in art history has remained relatively stagnant in contemporary culture. Still, artists from the Byzantine period to Michelangelo and even Damien Hirst have made countless works with gold as the sole source, means, and directive of the work. Today, however, the use of gold in modern or contemporary art (while prevalent) is often used cheekily, consciously referencing the medium’s historical and overwrought allegorical signifiers, or self-awarely pointing out the kitsch connoted therein.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  All media adopts gold as its raison-d’être will be considered, including: two-dimensional, three-dimensional, installation, video, performance, new-media and other traditional and non-traditional media.

DEADLINE:  December 3, 2012

NOTIFICATION:  It is the applicant’s responsibility to check the site in throughout December and January 2013, when results will be posted online. Only successful applicants will be contacted by email.

ENTRY FEE:  None

The featured food at my house this week is Jona Gold apples ($.89/lb). Last month is was asparagus ($1.99/lb).  This whole month it has been apples, partly because of our proximity to an orchard, and partly due to price.  We’re heading toward Winter, and I’ll be eating $1 butternut squash for at least 2 months.
