My kid has moved into his dorm, and my friends are waiting for the teary, heartbroken depression to set in. I can’t promise it wont happen, but if feels unlikely. I do miss him. Despite the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the ongoing reality of Flint, Michigan, and the horror of #NoDAPL protest conditions, among a hundred other examples, I am guilty of taking for granted that when I turn the handle, the water will be clean and abundant. Until the wildfires. It only took a week of boil conditions to make me realize how precious water is. While we were under boil orders, I second guessed every utensil, every plate. ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3. 15% of artist fees go to 2 charities per competition. 7.5% to the curator’s choice of charity and 7.5% to the first place winner’s chosen charity. Adriaan Van Der Plas has chosen the charity Clean Water Action.

CURATOR: Founder Adriaan Van Der Plas was once himself an outsider, having left his hometown of Vienna, Austria in 1973 to immigrate to New York City. Around this time, artist Konstantin Bokov was preparing to make the same transition. Inspired by the works of Van Gogh and unable to show his art in the political climate of the USSR, he decided to leave the Ukraine for New York city. The two became acquainted in 1993, when Bokov approached Adriaan at his former art pushcart concept in the South Street Seaport district, “Art a la carte”.

Adriaan became an avid collector of his work, recognizing the sincerity by which the work was able to portray New York’s spirit and materiality. With the opening of the Van Der Plas gallery on 156 Orchard Street, Adriaan made it the gallerys mission to bring contemporary outsiders into the public eye.

Sleep is not my friend. As a lifelong insomniac, and I have tried EVERY remedy –prescription, herbal, oils, sounds, aroma. Lack of sleep promotes depression. For me, depression often takes the form of extended weeks or months of “the blues” marked by an remarkable lethargy and a sort of emotional paralysis. It is more common in winter, so I am actively combating insomnia every February. This year, I am having moderate success by not snacking late at night (my apologies to the massive hit sustained by the popcorn industry) & getting half an hour of moderate exercise each morning. Creativity is the ultimate therapy & this next Call is a great chance to work out some pent up “blues”. Investigate….

I lived in the USVI for a couple of years, and my house used only cistern water. Rainfall kept the supply flowing for most of the year, but a couple of months prior to the rainy season we’d have to pay to have the cistern fill… about $500. That was 20 years ago. I try to internalize this memory every time I pay my $85 water bill. Well, that and I can actually cook with the tap water at my current home. It is all a matter of taste, right? I know that for every food there is someone who believes its tastes better than all other foods, but I still can’t quite resolve myself to the notion that some foods aren’t just objectively bad. Warhol is famous for, among other things, depictions of a soup. That same soup is the foundation for thousands of green bean casserole recipes. SOMEone believes it to be “Mmm mmm good”, but I am not one of the some. I don’t have a lot of food limits, aside from Century eggs and boiled okra, but just no.
