an imperfect PLACE for food

My kitchen table drama is ongoing.  It is a 45″ round pedestal-style table with a black, faux-milkpaint finish.  Black shows every speck, and that’s worse when your driveway is gravel (or, in my case, not a great housekeeper).  Every time I clean the table, the stain of of the finish comes off a little more and the chairs are a misery.  It gets used as a makeshift desk, studio worktable & only an occasional serving surface, so I can’t bring myself to get rid of it.  My mother’s solution was to quilt a new set of wedge-shaped placements.  All better, right?  Gotta love her optimism.  This next Call won’t make everything better either, but it is a lovely improvement.  Plus, it is a ongoing deadline…

Check out this Open Call for Entries from The Woven Tale Press for unsolicited submissions.  No entry fee for this opportunity.  Writing submissions are welcomed as well.  Art publication is worth the effort, and I’ll keep publishing them until we find the right one for you.  Take a look…

HERO

What would we do without the iconic dishes that make up the safety net?  You know the ones…everyone likes some version of it.  They tend to be my “go to” meals on nights when I have to plan in advance.  Since I don’t know what anyone will be in the mood for, I hit the highlights.  Tonight is spaghetti night.  No matter who is coming, I can cover vegetarian, vegan & gluten-free if need be.  This Call is all about iconic art categories.  Please investigate this one.  If you work in 2-D, there is probably a way to make this work for you

Check out this Call for Entries from Art of Brands (a new AAAD sponsor) for Iconic Images.  There is no entry fee, and this could be a great way to earn money from your art.  Take a look…

*Editor’s Note:  So many of you have talked to me about selling your work w/o being bogged down running a gallery or about art fairs or gallery representation.  I know you often leave the conversation not feeling like nothing is accessible.  I like THIS opportunity.  If you work in 2-D, don’t dismiss this Call.  Some of you might consider simply doing what you already do but direct some content to suit this purpose.  It won’t be for everyone, but I think it is a valid option for a lot of you.

I am a culinary cheapskate, of sorts.  I try to limit the cost of a home-cooked meal’s protein to $2 to $4–total, not per pound.  It comes from years of having no choice; however, I have these budgetary restriction to partially thank for my culinary creativity.  You try having chicken, turkey, eggs or pork 4 days in a row; it will make you creative too.  Now I will still buy a lux bottle of vinegar for $15, but I have priorities, ha. I am not fond of food buffets, generally speaking.  I can’t ever get past the image of myself as a cow being herded along a trough.  Then there is the germy thing.  But, I have been proven wrong on occasion.  The buffet, as a concept, I appreciate though.  Think of art venues as a buffet of options; they come in every shape and size in both the most conventional and the least likely locations.  This next call gives you an opportunity to try something new.  Investigate the menu…

Today, I miss peanut butter.  When I was pregnant, peanut butter was a wonder food.  It had just enough protein, sugar and fat to transform my mood, one tablespoon at a time.  In celebration of my in-laws 50th Anniversary, I am headed on vacation to a much warmer clime…just in time for Christmas.  You know what is not great about a warm vacation at Christmas?  Being in a bathing suit at Christmas… when I should be eating peanut butter cookies and peanut butter pie and everything else that won’t run from me.  Oh well, my pregnancy days are long over, so I’m gonna lay off the peanut butter for a couple of months.  This next Call involves a completely different kind of womb.  Take a look…
