celebratory EDIBLES

Do you make food resolutions?  No, I don’t mean diets.  Do you make promises to eat healthier or cleaner?  Or maybe to cut some food that makes you itchy, grouchy or gas-y?  Yeah, me neither.  Not anymore.  My eating habits go with the flow.  I eat a lot of whole, fresh foods, punctuated by occasional, terribly-crappy junk food, and it seems to work for me, ha.  This year, I am resolved to drink more bubbly.  I love Prosecco.  I like the sense of celebration, and I want to spend more time celebrating the little stuff.  What is your go-to drinkable or edible celebratory treat?  Chocolate? Guac?  Join me for my year of Yay!  We deserve it.

My last major change was the abandoning of all dairy except whole milk options, and a complete, mid-career left turn in mediaYikes.  Until my change of media a couple of years ago, I was working, almost exclusively, as a xerographist.  There is no Xerography Association, locally, nationally or internationally, to my knowledge.  So, I never had the ability to take advantage of media-specific membership.  Now that I am a watercolorist, I have more options.  However, because I embroider over my paintings, my work is typically considered mixed media by painters and painting by fiber artists.  I’m not sure if I’ll ever find a watercolor or fiber art society to call home.  Do you have a media association that you love?

One of the benefits of association shows is the prestige.  Because they are almost always juried by working master artists, the recognition of your work is meant to be a stamp of approval on your dedication to developing your skills, plus, they often have large cash prizes.  There are frequently multiple show opportunities throughout the year as well as educational & critique options that can’t be found anywhere else.  THOSE are all great arguments for the next Call, but I’m not an oil painter.  If you are, this is a great show.

swirl & DRIZZLE

Kitchen creativity is all about the art of substitution.  I find that I am okay with juice instead of syrup in many dishes, but in savory dishes, I find oil replacements frequently leave me missing something.  Have you had an olive packed in oil versus an olive packed in oil?  There is no comparison.  I’ll take a drizzle of sesame oil over almost anything.  This next Call is all about the oils.  Take a look…

“Here Kitty Kitty” (oil & charcoal on paper) by Susan Grace

“I find that I am an obsessive observer of signs but am increasingly skeptical that I perceive them in the ways intended by those who produced them.” Susan Grace

I am moving my home and downsizing again.  This is the last step on the way to making my family more mobile.   I have temporarily returned to goal-specific formal secondary education, and have just met the end of residential parenting.  My world is shifting.  I look around me for comfort in the familiar, in signs and symbols that the sun will appear once again in the morning.  And, while the sun has yet to disappoint me, it is hard not to feel isolated when you interpret all the signs differently than those around you.  I feel as a stranger in a strange land, like the title of that famous sci-fi novel.  When I read the statement of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Susan Grace, I new I’d found a kindred spirit.  Read the statement, browse the work.  Maybe we aren’t strangers after all.

“I want a calm understanding to be felt, despite what may never be known. I want us to find more possibility in the intangible, and allow for it to come into its own.” —Tracie Cheng

______________

We grow up hearing “anything’s possible”. But is it really?  Possibilities vary from person to person.  Privilege aside, doesn’t the individual’s talents and tendencies shape what is truly possible?  I believe we find our possibilities where we look for them.  I struggle with faith but find the need for absolutes stifles creativity. The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Tracie Cheng suggests possibility in the intangible which requires faith in some form.  Maybe it is dichotomy, not contradiction.
