celebratory EDIBLES

Do you make food resolutions?  No, I don’t mean diets.  Do you make promises to eat healthier or cleaner?  Or maybe to cut some food that makes you itchy, grouchy or gas-y?  Yeah, me neither.  Not anymore.  My eating habits go with the flow.  I eat a lot of whole, fresh foods, punctuated by occasional, terribly-crappy junk food, and it seems to work for me, ha.  This year, I am resolved to drink more bubbly.  I love Prosecco.  I like the sense of celebration, and I want to spend more time celebrating the little stuff.  What is your go-to drinkable or edible celebratory treat?  Chocolate? Guac?  Join me for my year of Yay!  We deserve it.

My last major change was the abandoning of all dairy except whole milk options, and a complete, mid-career left turn in mediaYikes.  Until my change of media a couple of years ago, I was working, almost exclusively, as a xerographist.  There is no Xerography Association, locally, nationally or internationally, to my knowledge.  So, I never had the ability to take advantage of media-specific membership.  Now that I am a watercolorist, I have more options.  However, because I embroider over my paintings, my work is typically considered mixed media by painters and painting by fiber artists.  I’m not sure if I’ll ever find a watercolor or fiber art society to call home.  Do you have a media association that you love?

One of the benefits of association shows is the prestige.  Because they are almost always juried by working master artists, the recognition of your work is meant to be a stamp of approval on your dedication to developing your skills, plus, they often have large cash prizes.  There are frequently multiple show opportunities throughout the year as well as educational & critique options that can’t be found anywhere else.  THOSE are all great arguments for the next Call, but I’m not an oil painter.  If you are, this is a great show.

swirl & DRIZZLE

Kitchen creativity is all about the art of substitution.  I find that I am okay with juice instead of syrup in many dishes, but in savory dishes, I find oil replacements frequently leave me missing something.  Have you had an olive packed in oil versus an olive packed in oil?  There is no comparison.  I’ll take a drizzle of sesame oil over almost anything.  This next Call is all about the oils.  Take a look…

BUTTER

Why doesn’t food taste like it did when you were a kid?  It isn’t just sentimental remembrance.  It is because food isn’t made the same way or with the same ingredients, even at HOME.  I want to encourage you to experiment with the simplest of foods.  Try a simple saute of ANY organic vegetable in grass-fed butter, or if you don’t do dairy, try unrefined coconut oil.  It isn’t a new way of cook.  In fact, it is the most traditional way.  All vegetables used to be organic.  All butter used to be from grass-fed cows.  I’m suggesting that we’ve forgotten how good traditionally raised and prepared food is.  Try it again.  This call is also for the traditional.  Take a look…

It is ramp season in the Smoky Mountains.  I am thrilled to have a locally-grown, fresh vegetable of any sort after the winter of snow & ice we just endured–even if it gives us all dragon breath.  If you aren’t familiar, ramps are spring onions with a strong garlic smell and onion flavor.  They are called “spring leeks” elsewhere.  We’re using them in salads, soups, casseroles and atop nearly every dish consumed in my house right now.  You name it, we’re finding a way to eat them.  Another sign of Spring is this next Call.  Maybe this one is for you…

JUROR:  Greg Scheibel has always felt a strong connection to the outdoors. Throughout his life he has spent a great deal of time hiking, fishing, backpacking, and closely observing his surroundings, which has led to a deep appreciation for the remote locations and unspoiled beauty of the West, which is the main inspiration for his paintings. Greg paints on location as much as possible, trying to capture an honest record of the values, color, and feel of an area. The emotional connection to nature which is the result of these field studies, is the foundation for all of his work.

Swiftcurrent Falls Glacier Park by Greg ScheibelYears of drawing, pouring over art books, collecting and studying paintings of artists he admired, and a general accumulation of life’s experiences contribute to what he puts into his paintings. Although still relatively new to the professional art world, he began selling his work in 2005 and became a full time artist in 2007, he shows his work in some of the West’s finest Galleries and has been invited or juried into a number of prestigious shows. He has received several awards for his work, and scholarships from the Scottsdale Artists School, an Award of Excellence from the OPA on 3 occasions, and was recently awarded Signature Membership in that organization.  He has been listed as an ‘Artist to Watch’ in Southwest Art Magazine, and featured in Western Art Collector.

JUROR:  Kim Casebeer was born & raised in Kansas.  As part of a fourth generation farm family, she has been connected to the land for a long time.  Kim still lives in Kansas and draws her inspiration from the simplicity of the Flint Hills, an area of wide open ranch land.  “It’s a simple landscape,” she says.  “It’s not grandiose.  You have to spend some time and let it speak to you.”  These days Kim also feels at home painting in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming and Texas.  “I think the simplicity of the Kansas landscape has helped me find the essence of other places.  I’m able to focus on what’s important in a composition.  It’s as much about what’s not in the painting as what is.”

Work by Juror Kim Casebeer!Kim received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kansas State University in 1992.  She worked as a graphic designer and art director in order to pay the bills, while spending evenings and weekends painting until 2002, when she was able to make the leap to full-time artist.  Kim has continued to study with artists such as Albert Handell, W. Scott Jennings, Michael Albrechtsen, Scott Christensen and Matt Smith.

Kim has work in many private, corporate and museum collections throughout the United States.  She is represented by American Legacy Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri; Grapevine Gallery in Oklahoma City; Hueys Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico; K. Newby Gallery in Tubac, Arizona; Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson, Wyoming; and Strecker-Nelson Gallery in Manhattan, Kansas.
