SQUASH

Who knew squeaky food existed?  Not me.  If you steam summer squash, the outer skin squeaks against your teeth.  I love squash, but the squeak gives me the willies.  The smaller the summer squash, the less the squeak.  Apparently I can only handle the pipsqueaks, hehe, like this next Call.  Take a look…

with my satay, please

Food has interrelation–be it natural or forced.  In the US, peanut butter is only naturally related to grape jelly, but it is fantastic with raspberry jam.  PB&J has a distinct meaning apart from its separate components.  My immediate connection with peanut butter is peanut sauce, but my connection to PB&J is childhood comfort.  Odd, eh?  This next show is about the interrelation of work, one deriving meaning from the other.  I like this theme…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Northbrook Public Library (Northbrook, IL) for their annual juried show, called Social Media Artshow this year. The entry fee is reasonable. Social Media Artshow 2013

Art is the original social media: it reaches out and draws together, trying to make connections. It incites discussion and draws meaning through relationships. We are looking for works that are either created in a series or multiple elements (like diptychs) that generate meaning through their interrelation, or works that react to existing famous artworks. The mathematics are simple: one is quotidian and two is exponential.

ELIGIBILITY: The show is open to artists 18 years and older.

MEDIA: 2 and 3 dimensional art executed within 3 years of entry date and not previously been displayed in the library.

Road trip food rocks.  Even bad food results in a good story about bad food.  You can’t miss a burger at The Varsity in Atlanta or a frozen hurricane at Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans.  But, don’t dismiss the hole in a wall on a back road with one blinking light and a frog legs special either.  This next Call will have you reminiscing about your road trips too.  Take a look…

UMMYYUMMY

I am not a fan of baby talk.  I don’t like it when adults talk to children in that voice and I certain don’t like to hear grown women use that tone.  However, as an adult, I seem to have developed a Suess-ian fondness for making up words where there is no need outside of making them rhyme.  I have not excuse.  None.  And, I’m thinking that my unnecessarily made up, substitute name for fried chicken, “chicky wicky” (yes, I wish I were kidding) will not make it into the dictionary as some verbal creation inevitably do–like the name of this show.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Without A Map

There is a $35 entry fee; however, the Northbrook Public Library (sponsor of the show) does not take a commission on sales.  Woo hoo!

I frequently expound the virtues of showing in more academic and/or public venues like universities and libraries.  These are opportunities for you to show in a respected space and often find a different audience.  Give it a try.  Here’s the call:
