Another Valentine’s day has come and gone without a gourmet candlelit dinner.  In fact, I had fried chicken from deli section of my grocery store and waffle fries.  Romantic, eh?  Well, maybe my idea of romance is a bit different than you would expect.  I spend a lot of my life taking great care of the nutritional value and creativity of my meals.  Love means making it okay to eat fried chicken (not baked) in my pajamas while watching Biggest Loser.  No really.  This next Call is a new twist on love-themed shows.  Is this one for you?

Check out this Call for Entries from ARTs East New York (Brooklyn) for Her Love Made Visible.  This is a great organization, and did I mention that there is no entry fee and only 10% commission?  Take a look…

OPEN CALL: The Soap Factory

something good

I almost moved to Kentucky because of a pickle/tamale factory. Have I told you this story? I know, I should search my posts before I write. Yeah, yeah, yeah.  So, for once it ISN’T about the pickles or tamales.  Nope.  I looked into the Paducah Artist Relocation program and fell in love with a pickle/tamale factory in need of rehab.  I love factory spaces for art.  This next Call is how I relieve myself of the anxiety of not taking the pickle/tamale factory. I submit every year.  Eventually they will let me in.  You wait and see…

Check out this Open Call  from The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN).  The Soap factory is looking for work for group exhibits, AND they offer installation support, travel, accommodations, and a stipend to those selected to exhibit.  Did I mention NO ENTRY FEE?

Surprised!

Salt and pepper are the basics of all seasoning.  Given nothing else, you can still do wonders with this pair.  However, while menu-planning for an upcoming cabin vacation with my family, I have had to take sodium content into mind for my mother’s sake.  WOW!  What an eye opener.  One-half a frozen average-size pepperoni pizza (3 slices of 6) has her recommended sodium intake for 2.5 days.  I suppose that too much of a good thing really does exist.  This next call involves the basics of art…sketching.  Take a look!

Check out this Call for Entries from the Pontus Prize for Art (London) for Sketching Competition 2011.  There is no entry fee, but you’ll have to give up the sketch.  The bonus?  A possible $4000 commission.  Do your homework…

Be wary of free food.  I get invited to lots of business receptions and charity auctions.  The food isn’t terrible, just forgettable.  Forgettable food is simply a waste of time.  Don’t you have something better to do (or eat) than another Krab dip (the K is always the give away) or cheese ball?  Me too.  Here’s hoping the reception for this next Call results in better reception food.  Fingers crossed…

Check out this Call for Entries from The Art Gallery at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, CO for 4×6/6×4 Postcard Sized Art.  This is a charity event that requires you to donate the work, but it is also a great way to get an academic line on your resume and possibly find new collectors.  Investigate for yourself…

I will eat snails, but peaches give me the willies.  Illogical, I know.  It is about the fur.  I eat kiwi and coconut because it is clear they are meant to be peeled.  But fresh peaches have human-like hair growing that peeling seems a little cannibalistic.  I hear your snickering; don’t judge me.  I’ll eat my peaches canned or just settle for nectarines, thank-you-very-much.  This next Call is all about the fur… in a good way.  Take a look!
