How many of you have a potted rosemary bush?  Mine is blooming a gorgeous array of little lavender flowers.  Did you know the flowers are edible?  If you love the taste of rosemary but find the texture & taste a little to strong for delicate foods like fish, try using the flowers instead.  They are softer in both mouth feel & potency and even make a beautiful garnish when flash fried.  This next call is looking for flora, and it doesn’t have to be edible.  Take a look…

GREENS are the new black

The greens are emerging.  Many of you know that I live in Gatlinburg and wildfires recently swept the area.  Firefighters stopped the fire a mere 6′ from my doorstep.  The forest surround my home is charred.  But all of this unseasonably warm February weather (76°F today) has prompted the most tender of green leaves and unexpected happy daffodil heads to appear.  It is just another reminder that Spring is around the corner bringing with it the soft first lettuce leaves.  I can’t wait.  This next Call is in search of emerging artists; lettuce need not apply.  Take a look…

an imperfect PLACE for food

My kitchen table drama is ongoing.  It is a 45″ round pedestal-style table with a black, faux-milkpaint finish.  Black shows every speck, and that’s worse when your driveway is gravel (or, in my case, not a great housekeeper).  Every time I clean the table, the stain of of the finish comes off a little more and the chairs are a misery.  It gets used as a makeshift desk, studio worktable & only an occasional serving surface, so I can’t bring myself to get rid of it.  My mother’s solution was to quilt a new set of wedge-shaped placements.  All better, right?  Gotta love her optimism.  This next Call won’t make everything better either, but it is a lovely improvement.  Plus, it is a ongoing deadline…

Check out this Open Call for Entries from The Woven Tale Press for unsolicited submissions.  No entry fee for this opportunity.  Writing submissions are welcomed as well.  Art publication is worth the effort, and I’ll keep publishing them until we find the right one for you.  Take a look…

Miserable failure is the only path to culinary success.  It is true.  There are no short cuts.  You have to try and try again, analyzing results and altering methods along the way.  The first few dozen times I soft boiled an egg, made a hollandaise or cheese sauce, the results were less than desirable, but I am grateful for my desire to learn how. I didn’t turn out to be a chef but it increased my perspective.  The same holds true for this Call. This media might not be in your skill set, and it may never be your first choice.  But, pursing the idea or learning a new skill may give you a new perspective on your own media.  You CAN be successfully project driven, just try…

GETTING a SHOW: Updated Resource

Getting a Show: Avoiding the Pitfalls & Pratfalls by RLGibson

ArtAndArtDeadlines.com began as a way to keep track of shows worth entering for artists, friends and peers– beginners, emerging & established. And over the years, I have found that established artists still make many the same mistakes I see from beginners, over and over again. As a gallerist, juror & critic, I am regularly asked why I choose one artist’s work over another.  There is never just one reason, but there are a handful of regular mistakes that influence my decisions NOT to choose work.  The obvious first issue: the art must be good, or at least promising–that should be the most important fact.  But to tell the truth, there’s a gallery or a show out there for most art– the sumptuous & the sour.  But, because the world is full of banana peels, we’ve newly updated one of our artist resources…

CALL for PROPOSALS: Solo Show Opportunity

Learn more from the Brentwood Arts Exchange about the Call for Exhibit Proposals!DINNER FOR ONE
and one alone

I don’t share well.  I don’t share anything well, but food is the worst.   I am not proud of it.  Maybe it is an only child thing.  I can logically know that a dish will be too much for me, but I will still not agree to share instead.  If I agree to a lets-get-one-of-each-and-share deal, we have to quite literally cut them in half upon arrival & exchange the halves.  Otherwise I spend the meal obsessing about whether or not my husband will eat more than his half.  I fall short of counting french fries–but just barely.  So, my submission to this next Call will likely be a solo one (although my better self sometimes triumphs); however, you are welcome to contemplate sharing.  Take a look…

My kitchen is now tiny.  My family has been downsizing year by year in prep for permanent tiny living.  My kitchen/dining are is 10′ square.  Not small by NYC efficiency standards.  For a cabin in the woods serving a family of 3 foodies, it IS small space for a double sink, full-size stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, kitchen table, 4 chairs, & dog bowls.  We adapted an under-the-stairs closet as a pantry, created a custom overhead pot rack to free up cabinets space and hung a small folding step stool on the wall to allow easy access to cabinet top space.  It is working.  In fact, I might be able to work in LESS space.  Who knew my space adaptive efforts would be both useful AND a stylish upgrade to my mountain-top kitchen?  But can I apply those skills to this next Call?  Just maybe…
