CALL for ENTRIES: Embracing our Differences 2020

Learn more about the Embracing our Differences 2020 Call from Coexistence!

KALE yeah!

How many kale lovers are among you?  I read an article recently that suggested that so many people dislike kale because of its bitterness that there are varieties being bred to tame the flavor.  Apparently people want to like kale but don’t know how.  Tell me that’s not a metaphor for the divisive nature of politics in the world today. Wow.

I’ve made my peace with kale.  I found a balance that allows the bitter to be a complement to my diet.  I get the health benefit, the flavor, and the value of cheap-but-trendy green veg.  I have not, however, made my peace with the politics of hate.  We can co-exist, but that requires embracing our differences, and that is among the reasons I promote the Embracing our Differences call each year.  If you’ve ever entertained the idea of adding public art to your resume, here’s an opportunity.  The theme is open to really wide interpretation.  You only need to take a look at their gallery of previous winners to understand that Coexistence is truly looking for YOUR point of view.  It could be your work that opens the eyes of someone that sees this exhibit.  Take the time to do you homework.  Is this exhibit for you?

Check out the Call for Entries for the Annual Embracing our Differences 2020 Exhibit in Sarasota, FL. Your work on a billboard, no entry fee & $3000 in awards. Plus, this is a great way to try on public art for size. Don’t miss this opportunity…

faster FOOD

After three weeks on my subscription food plan, and I am thrilled, (NOT a sponsored post), and the beet pesto OMG.  The impact on my available studio time has been fantastic… no more lunch prep.  My creative energy is less interrupted, and I am grateful.

In addition to food experiments, I have been testing out new paints and papers and brushes.  Exciting.  Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t, but I learn something new everytime.  To that end, this is an abbreviated post about an opportunity to win art supplies.

hold the SHRIMP

The people with whom I eat most often have lots of food allergies –milk, shellfish, wheat.  So how does a food co-exist with food allergies?  The secret is parallel thinking.  For example, I need to make chili paste for Thai dishes, but my husband is deathly allergic to shellfish.  Who might love Thai food, but naturally wouldn’t eat shrimp?  Vegetarians.  Vegetarian chili paste is made with shiitake mushrooms as the substitute for shrimp. Problem solved.  This next Call is about coexistence, diversity & inclusion on a much larger scale.  Take a look…

one EGG or two?

Simplicity can be a gift.  Sometimes what I want to eat has less to do with a craving and more to do with the ease of preparation.  When I’ve had a productive day, a drawn-out night of cooking weighs me down.  Sometimes an egg sandwich is just an egg sandwich; sometimes an egg sandwich is a gift.  This next Call see the transformative effect of art on our reparative health as a gift.  Take a look…

just say YES

I don’t understand the Sunday “cheat day”.  I have lots of health conscious friends that believe Sundays are for eating anything you want, no matter how processed, fatty or sugar-laden.  They are looking for a respite, I suppose, from the restrictive day-to-day food habits they practice.  But, I’m an adult, and I don’t need a cheat day.  I am going to eat what I want when I want and deal with the consequences.  Life is short; I want everyday to be a respite from deprivation.  So there.  This next Call offers you a respite from the world and time to concentrate on your art.  Take a look…

GREEN filler

I am the queen of comfort food.  I know that the secret to award-winning mac ‘n’ cheese is Dijon mustard. I know that a light coat of olive oil under the sauce prevent pizza crust from getting soggy while baking.  I know a dust of cayenne makes the chocolate sauce on your sundae sing.  But this week, my only comfort is salad.  Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and then vacation.  I have eaten everything that won’t run from me –none of it on the light side.  Different food for different feels (and fills).  This next Call wants your take on food and sustenance.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Brutal Beauty

Learn more about Brutal Beauty 2018 from the Lexington Art League! OVERCOOK me not

The worst crime against food is over-cooking, in my opinion.  Meat gets tough; veggies get mushy.  It all ends up tasteless.  Plus, the longer you cook food, the more nutrients are lost.  Vitamin C is particularly sensitive to heat. I keep finding more and more benefits to a raw food diet.  This next call wants to see your view of the human form, the nude in raw form.  I like this twist on a figurative call, AND they pay return shipping…

There are reasons, philosophical to medical, both against & in favor of the consumption of some things.  But more often that not, it just comes down to personal taste.  I hear people complain about the flavor of cilantro on a seemingly non-stop basis, but I can’t imagine a cilantro-less world.  Some people are never going to eat cilantro; I am not going to stop eating it.  This next Call is like cilantro, you’re going to love it or hate it, but it is still going to be your choice –no one’s forcing you.  So, take a look, or not…
