The women in my family have a grudge against the snap of a fresh green vegetable. My mother has canned green beans for her sisters for the last half-dozen years. Her process for canning requires a certain amount of cooking plus heat-sealing the jars which compromises the texture. It is the first day of Fall, and I am still nursing my garlic chives from Spring. I received a gift of a 6″ starter of garlic chives from a farmers market vendor. And, instead of re-potting, I just sat it in a dish in my window sill and kept clipping and watering. Miraculously, it is still here –testament to an excellent offering from an excellent farmer. I am grateful for the apples, but I am missing fresh local veggies already. My local orchard serves as my farmers market most weeks. With their cold storage program, I can get local apples for most of the year, but the veggies they offer are limited as of November. Aside from winter squash, the only thing LOCALLY fresh I’ll have until spring are potatoes, onions and maybe a hot house bell pepper or two. My grocery bill is absurd. I’m not having dinners of foie gras & truffles. In fact, most of our meals are vegetable laden. I try to stop by the farmers market at my local apple orchard. This week, it was $25 for apples, onions, 4 sweet potatoes, 3 bell peppers & 2 eggplant. As you might imagine, I then proceeded to spend a fortune at the grocery store to supplement my farmers market finds. I have a family of only three people + my four-legged child. I buy in-season, cost-conscious items. I consider myself a master food shopper, and I can barely hang on to a healthy menu. Intelligent Objects is an open call for those artworks that act as independent agents & explore the cross-section of analog & digital media. In this age, toasters communicate over the internet & robots vacuum our floors, this exhibition explores those artistic objects which appear to be responsive to our existence, or at least demand an empathy if not an emotion, that we give to sentient beings. The art in this exhibition need not be kinetic or sculptural, it is open to any combination of traditional & new media. JUROR: George Fifield is a media arts curator, writer, teacher and artist. He is the founder and director of Boston Cyberarts Inc., a nonprofit arts organization that produced the Boston Cyberarts Festival as well as film and video presentations and symposia at numerous organizations throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. For thirteen years, Fifield was also Curator of New Media at the DeCordova. He is an independent curator of New Media with numerous projects in the United States and abroad. Fifield has taught at a number of institutions on New Media subjects. He is adjunct professor at the Digital + Media program at Rhode Island School of Design.

AWARDS: Two artists will be awarded a joint exhibition at CAW in 2016. All selected entries will be included in an online gallery on the CAW website.
