Recently I called eggplant sexy, and I am still receiving email about that one.  So chew on this one: brussel sprouts are sexy too.  There.  I said it. I mean it. You don’t have to like it…or them.  The only thing that makes me hesitate to say my veggie self portrait would be a brussel sprout is, of course, they are green and round.  I strive not to be green or round. This next call is all about portraits. And I still think eggplant is sexy, folks…

Up Close & Personal

Portraits tell a story, depict a character, reveal emotion, demonstrate sensitivity and illustrate an intimate connection with your subject.

The greatest challenge and most important element in a successful portrait is an intimate connection with the subject. The ways in which you explore this connection, going beneath the surface and finding what is the essence of the portrait determines its success as a representation of your subject.

Explore different styles and methods of making revealing portraits that reflect not just the subject but you the photographer as well.  Demonstrate the sensitivity necessary to move beyond literal renderings to more intimate portraits. Create images that go below the surface and penetrate deeply into a subject’s character.

JUROR: Andrea Mellard is Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs at AMOA-Arthouse in Austin, Texas.   The newly merged museum provides rich environments for a wide range of audiences to investigate and experience excellence in modern and contemporary art.  The museum accomplishes this through innovative exhibitions, education, interpretative programs and direct access to the creative process.  Andrea Mellard draws on an interdisciplinary background to connect visual art to contemporary culture.  She has been on staff for seven years and curating for since 2009.

Previously, she was a curatorial and research assistant at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History for a three-year long cultural history project on Memphis, Tennessee. She holds an M.A. degree in American Studies from The University of Texas at Austin and an Interdisciplinary Humanities degree for California State University at Monterey.

People tell me the wackiest food facts.  I love hearing them, and I usually assume I am being told the truth.  But, just to be certain, I always verify the facts if I can.  Recently someone told me that the black and white cookie, that I alway think of as German in orgin, IS actually German, but it is called an Amerikaner.  There has to be some cyclical humor in the fact that an American who thought she was a fan of German cookies is really only a fan of cookies that Germans refer to as American cookies.  Funny.  This next call is all about Black and White, too.  Take a look…

Black & White: Absence of Color

The world’s first photographic images were made in shade of gray, black, and white, and the black and white photograph continues to be an important palette for photographers today. The beauty of a well-printed black and white photograph is undeniable—it is striking, unearthly, and can be life changing.

Some of the world’s most memorable photographs are black and white—the rich blacks, glowing whites, and silvery grays of a strong, black and white photograph leave a lasting impression on the mind. For photographers, those deep blacks hold a special significance, as it is the black tones that reveal themselves first in photographic chemistry and communicate the magic, mystery, and possibility of the photographic process.

Black and white photographs can have painterly, etching-like qualities, which were celebrated by photography’s inventors and early adopters. Photography as art was first championed with The Photo-Secessionists who celebrated the pictorial aspect of the black and white image. Today photography is widely accepted as an art form and as a key medium within contemporary and conceptual art.

The choice of using black and white versus color is the photographer’s choice, and the reasons for that choice can be personal, theoretical, or aesthetic. This call for entry—Black and White—The Absence of Color—looks to grays and blacks and whites to tell the story and make the picture that color would often muddy.

JUROR:  Bevin Bering Dubrowski is Executive Director of Houston Center for Photography, a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 offering year-round exhibitions, workshops, publications, outreach programs, lectures, and classes.  HCP’s mission is to increase society’s understanding and appreciation of photography and its evolving role in contemporary culture, and produces 15 – 20 exhibitions annually on and off-site, balancing work by regional and internationally acclaimed emerging, mid-career, and established artists.  Bevin curates exhibition for HCP and is also editor of spot magazine, a bi-annual journal of photography that includes artist portfolios, interviews, exhibition and book excerpts, and highlights on HCP members’ work.

Learn more about the MPLS Photo Center!Prior to joining HCP as Executive Director, Bevin founded the photography division of Bering & James and served as gallery director.  Bevin is also a practicing photographer and received her BA in Art History and Visual Arts from Emory University. Bevin has reviewed portfolios for FotoFest, Lens Culture/ FotoFest Paris, Photo Nola, and Photo Lucida.  She has also recently served as a juror for Critical Mass and the Lens Culture International Exposure Awards and serves on the FotoFest Art Board.

Spontaneous food creation is my favorite kitchen activity.  There is nothing more exciting than finding a use for dijon mustard when it is the last seasoning you have left because you haven’t had time to make it to the grocery store this week.  By the way, dijon mustard makes an excellent oil-free way to thicken homemade salad dressings. This next call asks you to submit your best spontaneous, unrehearsed  photography for exhibition.  I love this idea…

Off the Cuff: The Spontaneous and Unrehearsed will demonstrate the complex and varied roles photography employs as a witness and an accomplice in seeing the world. Relating to both the genres of street photography and performance art, these images may collectively portray chance encounters, improvisations, decisive moments in the height of action, and documents of occurrences. Without premeditation, the photographer captures what arises – acting as the mediator between the photograph and events as they unfold.

Juror Toby KampsA graduate of the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art and the Getty Museum Leadership Institute, Kamps has written on contemporary art and artists for numerous exhibition catalogues and magazines. In 2008, The Old Weird America won the award “Best Thematic Museum Show Nationally” from the International Association of Art Critics (AICA/USA).  Prior to his CAMH appointment, Kamps was Senior Curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Maine College of Art, Portland; and Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

History has never been my favorite subject.  However, I recognize how important a sense of history is in our everyday lives.  Everytime I make potato pancakes …and inevitably burn, mangle or drop them …I smile knowing Julia Child got there before me.  This next Call gives you a reason and purpose to reflect upon your history…at least about half of you.

Learn more about the MPLS Photo Center's Picturing Life as a Woman!Women have been actively involved with photography since the medium’s inception in 1839.  The barriers to their participation were lower than in the other arts, and recognition often came faster.  Yet women and their photographs have not been as visible as they should have been in view of their numbers and past influence.  Only in fairly recent exhibitions and critical writings have women’s work in photography received due consideration.

Learn more about Picturing Life as a Woman!Diane Arbus, Roni Horn, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith and thousands more women use their cameras as instruments of revelation – often about themselves. In the process they challenge assumptions about what it means to be and be seen.

ELIGIBILITY:  This International Call for Entry invites women from around the world to submit photographs that demonstrate a smart, critical take on women with cameras in this day of a more open and subtle notion of gendered identity.

Submissions are only limited by your imagination and may cover a broad range of challenging, personal, emotional, and political issues facing women today.  Their work-life, home, family, friends, relationships, life partners, homosexual, heterosexual, politics, equal rights, stereotypes, causes, roles and wishes.

Black and White Photography

I live in an area with a long-standing artisan crafts tradition, and I overhear a lot of conversation about how digital and “new-fangled” media will be the end of art as we know it.  As you might imagine, as a Xerographist, I couldn’t disagree more.  Artist Jerry Portelli and I even went so far as to create a series of square pieces in celebration of the pixel.  So, I find this call from the MPLS Photo Center fascinating.  Take a look…

Black & White Photgraphy Call for Entries from the MPLS Photo Center

Black & White Photography at MPLS!“Black and white are the colors of photography. To me they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is forever subjected.” – Robert Frank

What does “black and white” mean to contemporary photographers in the digital age? When Robert Frank made this observation, black-and-white film and silver prints were photography’s most commonly used materials. Nearly a half century later they are approaching “alternative media” status. Or are they? Are the implications and meanings of black and white still central to photography’s unique nature as a visual medium?

Submissions to this juried exhibition are limited only by your imagination and your photographic eye. Portraits, fashion, editorial, landscapes, documentary, conceptual – all of these genres, and others not named, are open for consideration.

MPLS Photo Center

Prints should take whatever form they need to in order to represent the continuum of tones, including gray tone, warm tone, cool tone, sepia, or other monochromes that comprise your photographs. Whether the initial recording was made on film or pixels is immaterial. However, in the final assessment, prints will be judged on their merits. Qualities of form, content, and relation to traditions of black-and-white printing and visualization will be sought in the pool of submissions.

re:photographica blogAbout the Juror:  As the founder, principal, and sole employee of re:photographica, George Slade has delved into matters related to the photographic arts for nearly thirty years. Although he started these inquiries as a photographer, his work over the past twenty years has been focused on curating, consulting, and commenting on others’ images. He was the artistic director of Minnesota Center for Photography (2003-2008) and the director of the McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships for Photographers Program (1998-2008). His writings have been published widely; he received a 2007 award from the Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers grant program. Web sites like Flickr and Facebook, and digital imaging in general, are drawing him back into the making side of photography. On Quodlibetica, his photographs accompany Kristin Makholm’s “Five Memos on a New Museum.”
