So, the move is complete.  My husband & I have downsized our home by half as the next step in our being completely mobile.  I am currently referring to my home as “box city” for reasons that I imagine are obvious.  Part of the move included purging my life of all the “stuff” weighing me down, including kitchen gadgets and single-use appliances.  The lack of stuff has necessarily affected my cooking as well, encouraging simplicity, whole foods & clean eating.  It is a new place, a new space & an opportunity for a fresh perspective.  This next Call, although un-themed, reinforces the idea of a unique sense of place.  Take a look…

Before moving to Tempe, Garth was the Curator of Artistic Programs at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia & spent 7 years as a Professor at College of the Redwoods in Eureka, CA. He is a self-described craft activist who explores crafts influence & relevance in the 21st century.

AWARDS:  $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror’s Awards. At the juror’s discretion, additional non-cash Honorable Mention awards may also be presented.

My child volunteered me to make tamales for his entire Spanish class.  He then neglected to schedule being home to assist me. (Fear not; I didn’t strangle him.) JUROR:  Teal Blake credits his authenticity as a western artist to “simply being fortunate enough to work & ride alongside” his “friends & muses.”  He has been featured in such magazines as Western Horseman, Western Art & Architecture, Southwest Art, Ranch & Reata, and The Cowboy Way.  Teal has garnered repeated honors in the Bosque Art Classic, plus the Joe Beeler CAA Foundation Award and 1st Place Watercolor at the Phippen Museum.  In 2014 joined the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America, quickly proving himself at CAA shows, winning silver in 2015 & gold in 2016.

Pineapples are showing up in mass at every grocer right now.  I can’t eat enough to take advantage of the availability, so I was contemplating making jelly or jam.  As you may know, pineapple fights the jelling process, so you have to use nearly twice as much pectin to make it work –which defeats the purpose of buying on sale.  Maybe I can freeze the cleaned pineapple and wait for gooseberries come into season.  These little treasures have huge amounts of pectin and can be made into jelly without ANY additional pectin.  This next Call wants your little treasures, but they must be monstrous…

There is a fine line between golden goodness & fried brown sameness.  I have an aunt who won’t eat “lacy” eggs or “dirty” biscuits, her phraseology for anything browned, but she only eats meats well done. Are we not to judge people on appearances?  Or are we not to judge the aspects of appearance beyond our control?  Where is the line?  Genetics may predetermine my body type, but I can modify or pierce anything I choose.   Genetics may determine the symmetry of my face, but aren’t we all just one YouTube video away from highlighted, strobed cosmetic bliss?  I have only questions about physical identity these days.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Amy Feigley-Lee, speaks to the projection of physical self into the world, specifically the tension between feminine norms and the reality of occupying space in this world as a woman.  I love the cohesion of her work, regardless of media.  This portfolio is a joy to navigate.
