such sweet NECTAR

Pancakes are an uncommon treat at our house.  Even the best of store bought syrup shouldn’t be kept as long as the periods between pancake occurrences at our breakfast table.  So, my husband now makes our pancake syrup.  Someone suggested he substitute agave nectar for the sugar in the recipe.  Wow.  It isn’t a 1:1 substitution.  Agave nectar is much sweeter than honey or refined sugar.  I can’t handle it.  We’ll stick to the water, sugar, molasses & vanilla standard, thanks.  This next Call is just sweet enough to intrigue.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Applicants from Just Shift for an Artist Residency at The Edge. One of 3 residencies can be completed virtually.  If you meet the requirements, be sure to apply even if you don’t want to travel to California.  Great opportunity…

of truth

Popcorn is now complicated.  I used to enjoy it from the theatre or from the microwave.  But in the continuing effort to eat real food, my husband now insists on popping it from the kernel on top of the stove.  We ran out two days ago, and after briefly considering experimenting with the .gif suggesting you can pop it on the cob in your microwave (don’t do this, btw), we opted for a bag of microwaveable popcorn left from a recent hotel stay.  Just no. Because Styrofoam, no. The next Call is Popped, sort of, & they don’t want Styrofoam either.  Deadline is NOW…

ARTIST of the DAY: Oriol Malet

musical GEN(i)US

I find artist inspiration in unexpected places.  Lately, I’ve had a rash of commissions that have come musicians –from punk to folk.  My brain processes the sound aesthetically and the imagery just appears.  I appreciate the opportunity to exercise my creative brain differently. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Oriol Malet finds much of his motivation in jazz. (continues below)

Red Books (left) & White Cat (right) by illustrator Oriol Malet!

Malet assures us that he does not take his references from graphic design but from literature and music. Oriol’s drawings derive more from the work of Boris Vian or Charles Mingus than from any visual artists.  He has been studying music for five years on the drums he has played all his life. Now, in addition, in honor of his devotion to jazz, he has begun to play the trumpet.

testing BOUNDARIES

In addition to being the Editor of AAAD, I spend a considerable amount of time consulting with artists individually on branding their work, unifying their message & the philosophical packaging of their work for consumption.  Technology is vehicle that allows delivery of work that is complete in contrast with that very technology.  I appreciate the push to expand my knowledge, to remain relevant, to drag a few artists wit me. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Alicia Tormey finds her own motivation in testing boundaries. (continues below)

“An insatiable curiosity drives me to constantly experiment while testing the boundaries of this medium. The mystery of not knowing what’s going to happen next has the power to hold my attention for long stretches of time. The unpredictable nature of encaustic and the open flame of a torch captivates me and pulls me along for a never ending ride.” —Alicia Tormey

yours FOREVER

In a Walmart world where most everything can be had for $10 or less, how do we avoid reinforcing a culture that regards everything is disposable?  How do we discourage casual consumerism and reinforce long-term responsibility of ownership?  Value.  Buy what you LOVE.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Emily Shane upcycles much-loved cast-offs of days past.   I LOVE the texture AND how illustrative this work is of falling down the reading “rabbit hole”. Reader’s Digest Condensed Book covers are my the base material for my mixed-media assemblages.  I’m inspired by their vintage look and texture, the rich colors, engaging patterns & surprising beauty –all of which are usually hidden under dust covers!  Now fading from the American gestalt, RDCBs speak to the baby-boomer generation as a bygone slice of middle-class life that will never return.”  Emily Shane

ARTIST of the DAY: David Marinos

never ALONE

One of the joys of editing AAAD is the artists that I meet. Some seek advice or publication, but most often, they seek connection.  Creativity is often isolating, but all of you have taught me that an art community is where and what and who you make it. Today’s Artist of the Day, David Marinos, will be 18 years old tomorrow.  My birthday wish for David is that he not know artistic isolation although his work already displays an understanding.

ARTIST of the DAY: Greg Sand

CHRISTMAS future

I watched Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” again last night.  I think the familiarity of the story along with the endless tongue-in-cheek remakes and knock-offs have taken the edge of the concept.  But what if?  What if your life was absent of you?  The work of Greg Sand, today’s Artist of the Day, reminds me of the reality of that concept.  Every vintage portrait over which I have longed in consignment and thrift stores has met their end.  Sobering.  Another thoughtful display of empathy– empathy for those connected to these unknown souls. (continues below)

Once Removed #1 (left) & Once Removed #4 by Greg Sand
Once Removed #1 (left) & Once Removed #4 (right) by Greg Sand

“The series Once Removed consists of antique portraits in which the subject is missing. In all of the images, only the photographer’s backdrop and chair–next to which the sitter once stood–remain. The photographs are now about the absence of the subject rather than about the subject itself. Hopefully the viewer ponders the removal of the person and concludes, given the obvious age of the portraits, that the subject is dead.

‘By giving me the absolute past of the pose…
the photograph tells me death in the future… I shudder…
over a catastrophe which has already occurred.’

“These words from Roland Barthes’s ‘Camera Lucida” describe how I feel when I view a photograph as old as the ones used in this series. I feel a connection to the person, followed by a dread of what is to come, followed by a sense of grief at what has already transpired. The removal of the subject–who is very much alive in the photograph–forces the photograph to more truthfully depict the present reality in which the subject is no longer alive.” — Greg Sand

MILK

I’m not really a milk drinker –never have been.  I use it in cooking and to make cheese, but by the glass is uncommon.  It has in recent years, though, become helpful in the winter months.  In the winter, my writing for AAAD & creating my own art (both visual & performing) keeps me indoors most of the time.  A lack of sunshine for extended periods of time is often accompanied by a general malaise –the winter blues.  Milk isn’t a miracle drug, but the boost of Vitamin D does seem to help.  This next Call wants your perspective on blue.  Take a look…
