Raw fish and seaweed tend to be very polarizing ingredients. Rarely do I meet someone who has a take-it-or-leave-it attitude about sushi. It tends to be love or hate every time. I understand why raw fish lacks appeal for so many. But, I find converting friends into sushi-lovers is often as simple as the surprise lunch. Up to 17 works will be chosen for installation in prominent locations in downtown Knoxville, TN.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to artists 18+, residing in U.S.

MEDIA: Open to sculpture suitable for outdoor installation.

DEADLINE: January 20, 2017

NOTIFICATION: February 10, 2017

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to 3

AWARDS: $3,000 Best of Show, $2,000 2nd Place, $1,000: 3rd Place $1,000, People’s Choice Award & $500: Two (2) Honorable Mention awards. In addition, all finalists whose works are installed will receive a stipend of $2,000 per sculpture—$1000 upon delivery to the site and $1000 upon removal. Read the full call for details.

SALES: Artists may sell their work during the exhibition period. However, the work must remain on site for the duration of the exhibition. Every effort is made to promote sales. All sales are handled by Dogwood Arts. The Dogwood Arts retains 30% commission.

My brain spins. And my mouth usually keeps up. I turned to my husband recently & asked, “Are your ears tired? I can’t seem to shut up.” I struggle to quiet my mind, hence twenty years of insomnia. Some days I require a sole project or a single object upon which to focus to have a more solitary soundtrack in my head. I find the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Mark Castator, requires me to concentrate on the forms within the form which is oddly calming. (continues below)

ENTRY FEE: $25 for up to 6 ($6 ea. add’l)

JURORS: John Lopez, Metal Sculpture Artist. Sculptor John Lopez was born and raised in Western SD. His western & rodeo theme bronzes have been well received & have sold all over the country from CA to NY. For the past 10 years, John has been working on The City of Presidents project in Rapid City SD, creating bronze sculptures of the presidents. In the midst of a successful career in bronze sculpting, Lopez discovered scrap iron sculpting. See Blonde pictured above right.

James Van Nuys, a realist painter & sculptor, is one of the finest interpreters of the SD landscape. Van Nuys was born in Whittier, CA and has lived intermittently in Rapid City,SD most of his life. He attended Wilmington College, graduating with a double major in art & music. Shawn Wilson, owner of the new Shaviq Gallery, designs beautifully unique jewelry consisting of natural stone, repurposed wire, bright colors of glass, broken jewelry, old buttons, dead watches, even tea bag tags.

SALES: The gallery will retain 35% commission
