My 14 year old TAKES HIS LUNCH everyday.  No joke.  He is allergic to wheat, and public school lunches, aside from having wheat hiding everywhere, are not to his liking.  I have ruined his ability to eat fake food.  So, his lunches are often a little like homemade Lunchables™ with a little of this and a little of that.  But the last time I had to fly, I encounter the most bizarre concept–Lunchables™ for adults.  Well, not literally; at least I don’t THINK Oscar Mayer® is making in-flight foods.  Maybe a little tapas lunch of your own making will help you tackle this gravity defying Call.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for Take Flight from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, Virginia). The entry fee is very reasonable, and I’ll bet you already have lots of work that works with this theme…

Take Flight

Humans have always desired to take to the skies. Fascinated by flight, we construct machines to propel us into the air; from kites and hot air balloons to supersonic jets. We admire birds and costume ourselves with wings, imagining what it would be like to fly without assistance.

For Take Flight, The Kiernan Gallery seeks
images of and about defying gravity.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

not desert,
please

I make a trip to the grocery store everyday.  It isn’t my attempt to be more European or even an effort to buy as fresh as possible.  No, something just comes up empty, out or missing every single day.  It drives me crazy, but I should be grateful.  Have you heard of food deserts?  Imagine driving 1 1/2 to get to the closest grocery store.  I’m going to stop whining, and you take a look at this next call for landscape photography–deserts, not food deserts, included…

Check out this Call for Entries for Mainland from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, Virginia).  The entry fee is very reasonable, and the theme is a classic.  But this classic is challenging.  Set yourself apart…

The genre of landscape photography is as varied as the earth itself. Untouched wilderness offers as much rich photographic material as manicured parks and farms. From mountains to coastlines, desert to tundra, our relationship with the land is complex and personal. For Mainland, The Kiernan Gallery seeks photographs that examine the wide variety in climate, topography, and development on our planet.

little piece of
my heart

I am craving tapas, and I am too lazy to do it myself.  I love the idea of little tidbits of a large variety of foods from savory to sweet.  I also love the sharing that is inherent in this sort of eating.  It always feels like we are sharing a chef’s whole portfolio of tricks and treats with those we love the most.  This next Call will allow you to show YOUR whole portfolio, and I am happy to share it with my readers…the ones I love most.  Too sappy for Thursday; I know…

Check out this Call for Entries for The Portfolio Show from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, Virginia). The is about a third lower this year than last.  So this is an excellent opportunity to show a full body of work for not much more than the average 3 image submission. If the shoe fits…

Portfolio Show

Every photograph tells a story. When part of a body of work, the photograph takes on a new meaning, becoming part of a bigger and more complete narrative. A portfolio allows the photographer to explore the complexities of their subject, providing context that gives it richness and meaning greater than the sum of its parts. The Kiernan Gallery is pleased to announce its second annual portfolio showcase, juried by renowned photography critic Vicki Goldberg.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

DEADLINE:  May 23, 2012

Goldberg has received numerous awards for writing, including the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award, the Royal Society’s Dudley Johnston Award, and the Long Chen Cup (China).  Ms. Goldberg, who has taught courses at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York, the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City, the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Institute of Boston, lectures internationally and writes on photography for various magazines.

will make you cry

Much of the time I spend in my kitchen is with my critters hoping for a morsel of anything I am cooking.  They seem most attracted to the kitchen when I am cooking onions and garlic–two foods dogs can’t digest.  We always want what we can’t have, eh?  This next Call wants YOU, so don’t play hard to get.  Show them your creatures…

Check out this Call for Entries for Creatures from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, Virginia). The entry is very reasonable, and the juror is well-documented. Take a look…

Creatures

From beloved pets to exotic wildlife, animals hold a certain fascination for photographers. They serve us as faithful guardians, trusted steeds, and loyal family members. We invoke them to highlight human traits both good and bad, but also search for our humanity within them.

Photographing both the tame and the wild, we seek kinship that cannot be communicated with words. Whether as taxidermy for study, pets for companionship, or out in the wild, for Creatures, the Kiernan Gallery seeks photographs that depict our complex relationship with the animal kingdom.

glory

As I may have mentioned a few hundred times, we try to be very careful about what we eat.  Braising has become my alternative technique for cooking almost anything.  A TINY smidgen of olive oil in a non-stick pan allows me to caramelize veggies and meats, then I de-glaze the pan with a little water that helps steam the food to the proper temperature.  No frying needed.  This next show wants to see you alternative methods.  Might have to enter this one myself…

Alternative process photography today is a hybrid of historical techniques and contemporary ideas. Old is new again and the resurgence of non-silver processes has led to The Kiernan Gallery’s second alternative process exhibition.

Whether it is in reaction to digital, or a hybrid process aided by the technology, these techniques remain as evocative as ever, bringing a unique style to present-day ideas. For Methods (Alternative), The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that use any alternative processing technique for any idea you wish to express.
