Music dictates food and scheduling in my household.  As musicians ourselves, we spend a lot of time grabbing food before a gig.  Too much of the wrong type of food (read Mexican), makes for unpleasant belching through most of the first set, but insufficient food (read salad) makes for a grouchy guitarist and missed chords.  I keep telling you folks…Food makes the world go ’round; you’ll believe me eventually.  This next Call is all about the music, not the food.  Love this opportunity...

From tribal drumming to radio DJs, advertising jingles to Italian opera, music is important to every culture. Even though it is more accessible than ever before, our thirst for rhythm and melody continues unabated.

Show them your record collections, instruments, and portraits of musicians and fans. Show us stadium concerts, jam sessions, and street performers from distant nations. Most of all, show us what music means to you. For Encore: A Look at Music, The Kiernan Gallery seeks photographs of and inspired by music.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

Egiziano has worked with some of the most talented photographers in the commercial photography business. She has been a recipient of a Society of Publication Designers award every year since 2005.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase.  A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

Package design truly affects my food purchases.  From clusters of naturally adorable clementines in a little wooden crate to the little pink pig on my favorite Brown Mix, No Pudge FudgeNote: These are the best brownies I have EVER eaten in my life.  My family is addicted, and I appreciate that just calls for yogurt–we prefer to use Greek yogurt with a little extra vanilla.  I’m not certain if my background in graphic design makes MORE or LESS susceptible.  This next Call is all about Design.  You’ve got the eye; now it is your turn to show it off!

There are principles of good design that when used properly, will make a good image much better, and a great image dynamite.  With an understanding of how to apply these principles in making your images, you’ve got a excellent chance at elevating even dull subject matter to visually enticing, and in some instances, simply persuasive.

Does your image use point, line, color, form or shape, space, texture, and/or pattern to effectively communicate your intent?  Does the image portray a sense of unity, balance, proportion, rhythm/repetition/similarity, hierarchy/dominance/emphasis/figure to ground.  Let’s also add a few of the gestalt principles into the mix:  Closure (our tendency to see and assume something which is not technically there/to fill in the missing pieces), Continuance (our tendency to follow a visual or suggested path), and Proximity (the two-dimensional relationship of objects to each other within the frame).  If you have images that clearly illustrate one or several of the above mentioned elements and/or principles of design, they would love to see them.

JUROR: Joe Baraban has been photographing since the age of 24, where he took a job as a Medical Photographer at the Methodist Hospital in Houston (there aren’t many of us who can brag about a field entry like that!) . He became Freelance soon thereafter, and over the next forty years built a commercial portfolio including work for clients from Coca Cola to Hennessy, Cessna to Boeing, and IBM to Microsoft.  His resume also includes most of the Fortune 500 companies.  He has photographed the full line automotive brochures for Acura, Saturn, and Range Rover, not to mention campaigns for Jaguar, Ford, Toyota.  Although he’s rather famous in the auto industry, you’ll see his work spans portraiture, travel, industrial, and general commercial with a visual voice clearly seated in eye-popping design.

Savor the firsts.  Nothing every tastes quite as good the second time around.  I still remember my first taste of pomegranate.  And the first chocolate cake that came from my Easy Bake Oven remains unrivaled.  For some reason we always assume that things get better with time, but I find that, at least with food, nothing ever beats the first taste.  This next Call requires the photo-equivalent of the Easy Bake.  Interested?

This competition is open to artists working with plastic cameras with plastic lenses (click the link if you are looking to buy one).  The more obsolete, flawed, and lo-tech, the better. Images should be taken with cameras with limited controls, such as Diana, Holga, Lubitel, Lomo, Banner, and Ansco cameras. Beautiful prints from less-than-gorgeous cameras – that’s what we’re looking for! This is RayKo’s largest exhibition of the year with artists from all over the globe submitting work, and hundreds of attendees at the reception.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: All work must be original & taken with a plastic camera & plastic lens.

Ann regularly participates as a juror and reviewer for a multitude of organizations.  She has also taught at the Maine Media Workshops since 1994.

Whether by road, sea, rail, air, or other means, vehicles are both essential and ubiquitous in our daily lives. Photographers have documented transportation history, as NASA launched rockets, Ford assembled cars, and the Wright brothers took flight. As modes of transportation, photographers observe the intersections of cultures on public transit and the isolation of solitary commuters on the highway. Modes of transit spawn communities, and photographers have documented biker gangs and houseboats.

Journeys are photographed out of windows of speeding vehicles; blurred, voyeuristic, and fleeting. The vehicles themselves are cultural icons and status symbols: sailboats, muscle cars, Harley-Davidsons, and fixed gear bicycles. For In Transit, The Kiernan Gallery seeks images from and of the vehicles that move us.

JUROR: Jock Montgomery has worked as a professional guide and expedition leader – and of course as a photographer – in some of the most beautiful spots in the world. Straight out of college, Jock moved to Nepal to train raft guides and lead trekking, river running and mountain biking trips in Nepal, Tibet, India and Bhutan. He has taken more than 70 groups on a variety of trips in the Himalayas, as well as co-lead numerous kayaking expeditions with first descents in Nepal, Bhutan and India.

After 12 amazing years in Katmandu, Jock is now based in Bangkok, Thailand, with his French wife and co-explorateur Annie Miniscloux where he is in demand as a commercial and editorial assignment photographer. He was the sole photographer for Menam Chao Phraya, River of Life and Legend, a 252-page coffee-table book about Thailand’s principal waterway. He speaks Nepali fluently and is conversant in Thai.

AWARDS: For this exhibition, juror Jock Montgomery will select up to 30 images for display in the main gallery, and up to an additional 40 to be included in the online gallery. All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced.

I am not a fan of red velvet cake. Someone will be at my door any moment to evict me from the South, but I am just don’t get it. Most of the red velvets I have tasted are lightly cocoa-flavored cakes with the plastic-y overtone of excessive amounts of artificial red coloring. I wonder if beetroot can be used to color with adding the flavor of beetroot? Hmmm. Iwill be patient. Someone will come up with one I love eventually. As a fine art photographer, author, and educator, he has counseled one-on-one, hundreds of photographers on their work, technique, and careers through personal reviews, and many more through his workshops, books, and multi-media outlets. As publisher of LensWork, he has reviewed thousands of submissions over the last 20 years. He brings a studied eye, to say the least, to his Jury task for our exhibition “Red.”

Brooks Jensen, together with Maureen Gallagher, are Co-Editors of LensWork Magazine, LensWork Extended, and LensWork Daily, an online resource for news, technology, commentary, and discussion through blogs and podcast. The self-portrait: Is it your compulsion? Your obsession? An impulse?

Was it out of necessity (the mandatory Photo 101 exercise, a portrait for the office newsletter, or because you needed to self-promote)? Is it the autobiographical record you decided was best told in image?

Sometimes we have to step in front of the lens – we can’t seem to communicate what we want to others, or maybe we’re just the most convenient choice for a model (the least expensive, for sure). Even if we got there by default, there is no one better able to translate our vision to the camera than ourselves. Perhaps you were experimenting with persona or striving for a personal perfection? Were you desperately seeking Self?

She balances her always imperative personal imaging pursuits with a large number of commercial clients. She is published widely, has won numerous awards, and retains a reputation as an instructor/mentor that leaves waiting lists worldwide.

Each of you who submits your self-portraits will be able to vote for up to four images (including one of yours if you’re that confident!). No anxiety here…images will be anonymous, labeled with titles and medium only if provided by their authors. You will not know who you are voting for, and your peers will not know who you voted for. Only those who make a submission will have access to vote. Though you are not required to vote, by submitting your images, you give the other submitters the right to view (and vote for) your images. The 50 to 60 images that get the most votes will be showcased in our gallery and online.

Why not have linner?  It seems that our weekend days often start with a late dinner that means no one is hungry at lunch.  We end up having what we call “linner”–a cross between lunch and dinner.  The best part?  It frequently means no one is hungry enough for dinner so we end up snacking all night.  this next Call want to know whats for dinner. What will it be?

“Dinner or Supper?  What a dilemma.  I have called the evening meal ‘dinner’ for as long as I can remember and ‘supper’ just dropped from my vocabulary.  My mother reminded me of the use of ‘dinner’ when my uncle invited us over to partake.  In my head, we were going at 6PM.  Well no, he meant noon.  Dinner for him was lunch for me and supper for him was dinner for me.  Whatever!  It all boils down to one thing.  Food.  And hopefully the company of good friends and loved ones.” — from the A. ENTRY FEE: A non-refundable entry fee of $25 for the first 5 images and $5 for each additional image is required. The Paypal link is on the Entry Form.

JUROR: Barbra Riley has been developing curriculum and teaching classes in photography, design, book arts and watercolor painting at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi for over 3 decades as well as curating exhibitions for the Islander and Weil Gallery, conducting workshops in historical photographic processes, bookbinding and watercolor painting and leading classes and workshops abroad.

Riley’s photographs and paintings have been included in exhibitions from Washington, D.C. to California.  Her work is scheduled for exhibition at the Open Photography Salon in Arles, France during the The Rencontres d’Arles, July 2-September 23.

Nationally, she is represented in the corporate collections of Chase Bank, New York, Kaiser-Permanente and Price Waterhouse, California.

AWARDS: Forty five to fifty images will be selected for exhibition and a Blurb full color catalogue of the exhibit with all the accepted entries will be available for purchase.  Awards are $325 for Juror’s Award, $250 and an exhibition catalogue for Director’s Award, five Honorable Mentions each receiving an exhibition catalogue and $100 for Visitors’ Choice Award.

SALES: A Smith Gallery will retain 40% commission out of the sales price.

Still Life

From Dutch masters’ paintings to contemporary photography, the still life has played an important role in art history. This genre grants the artist complete control over their subjects, allowing unparalleled ability to select details and manipulate the scene.

Still lifes often employ symbolism, where the objects assume their own character and identity. An entire story can be told with the arrangement of a few items; toys, dolls, and household goods become surrogates, and natural life is given a persona. For Still Life: The Art of Arrangement, The Kiernan Gallery seeks evocative and symbolic still life images.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of accepted work via email approximately eight days after the submission deadline.

Learn more about Juror Jason Landry!JUROR:  Jason Landry is the Owner/Director of Panopticon Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts. Established in 1971, Panopticon Gallery is one of the oldest fine art photography galleries in the United States specializing in contemporary, modern and vintage photography.

Landry brings over 20 years of business management and fine art photography experience to the gallery. He regularly attends portfolio review events and photography art fairs both nationally and internationally, has juried group exhibitions, and has lectured at regional and national art colleges and universities.

Landry received an MFA in Visual Arts from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and a BFA in Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He and his wife Anne are avid photography collectors and he is a Corporator on the Board of Directors for the Griffin Museum of Photography.

AWARDS: For this exhibition, juror Jason Landry will select up to 30 images for display in the main gallery, and up to an additional 40 to be included in the online gallery. All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced.

SALES: Artists exhibiting at the gallery may offer their work for sale. The Kiernan Gallery retains 30% of the sale price as commission.
