It is root vegetable season again. It isn’t all just potatoes and carrots. Root veggies are one of my only opportunities to have fresh food all the way through the winter. I’ve been preaching about turnip roots for years; try them as a substitute, if only in part, for mashed potatoes. Or celeriac is delicious. Rutabagas are divine, albeit stinky. How about kohlrabi? The girls-eat-salad debate continues. Stock photography makes it appear that women can barely nibble a leaf without laughing. Men in movie bars disparage women who eat salads for their sexier steak-eating counterparts. Body-shamers think women should only eat salad while movie intellectuals think kale salad is for silly hipsters. I am uncertain how gender really applies to food. I only know that after a weeks on the road, there is little better than hand-torn greens and back yard veggies from the farmers’ market topped with a homemade dress. My husband agrees. My next kitchen will not have cabinet doors. My need for symmetry & years of practice in downsizing lend to neat kitchen cabinets. There are exceptions: storage containers whose lids hide like socks in a dryer and the lazy Susan corner cabinet that probably has unflavored gelatin from 2010 hiding in the shadows. I drink everyday–bottles & bottles of water. As my alter ego, I perform 4 to 5 days per week, and on stage, I suck down approximately 24 ounces of water every 45 minutes to keep my voice in check. So, let’s talk about the bottles. I know that disposable bottles are not ideal due to the waste issue, but I am paranoid about being able to be certain that I am really getting disposable bottles truly clean. I have searched for a reusable bottle that has a large enough opening (for proper cleaning) but is both very compact (has to fit on a mic stand) and non-descript (so it doesn’t stick out in every picture). JUROR: Gary Braasch is an environmental photojournalist and writer who documents nature, environment, biodiversity and climate change around the world. He has been a nature photographer for more than 40 years, and is internationally known for dramatic, artistic and science-based nature photography. His images and assignment articles have been published by Time, LIFE, New York Times Magazine, Discover, Smithsonian, National Geographic, Scientific American and the United Nations among many others.

Most of his work is on conservation or natural history subjects, the coverage of which gained Gary the Ansel Adams Award from the Sierra Club in the U.S., and the Outstanding Nature Photographer citation from the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA). He was a founding Board Member of NANPA and a founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.

He received the Ansel Adams Award from the Sierra Club and the Outstanding Nature Photographer citation from the North American Nature Photography Association. In 2010 he was named as one of the Forty Most Influential Nature Photographers by Outdoor Photography magazine.

I am not currently a vegetarian, but I think I could be without that much difficulty. It is a personal choice that I have examined over the years. As Jon & I head toward a more agrarian lifestyle, I recognize that I am unwilling to take the life of an animal living on my farm (chickens, rabbits & goats). Instead, I leave that job to my husband who has less of a debate with it than I do. Does that mean I should not be willing to eat them–since I couldn’t kill them? This is my current philosophical internal dialogue. These animals offer my family the best way to get protein, but the chickens & goats can produce protein in the form of eggs & milk without it resulting in their demise. Should we choose NOT to kill them? I know both sides of the argument. Do I choose not to eat it if I cannot kill it? Living off the land is labor-intensive & complicated. As my husband I began planning for gardening our own little plot of land, my head swims with seed varieties, planting schedules, crop rotation, organic pest control, bee pollination & seed preservation. The advantages of having an agricultural degree is all too clear now. And then there is the livestock–goats and sheep and chickens.
