Alter Ego

Self-portraiture is often used to explore and manipulate identity. There is a performative aspect to this genre. By turning the camera on oneself the photographer is brought out from behind their lens, and able to choose how they would like to the world to see them.

The photographer invites judgment and critique on not only their artistic message, but also their appearance and demeanor. For this exhibition, The Kiernan Gallery seeks self-portraits that provide insight into the “second self” that appears when artist becomes subject.

JUROR: Stephen Sheffield, a native of the Boston area, is an alumnus of Cornell University, where he obtained a BFA in painting and photography. He received his MFA in photography from the California College of the Arts, in Oakland/San Francisco, studying under Larry Sultan and Jean Finley.

His photographs, often self-portraits depict both everyday and unusual events, all framed by his unique, and occasionally dark, sense of humor. His masterful storytelling, use of traditional silver, alternative processes, mural printing, and large-scale photo assemblage bring to his work a unique and cinematic mood.

Stephen has exhibited nationally for over 20 years, and has a number of large and small-scale commissions in, Boston, Cambridge and Brooklyn NY. He has worked out of his studio in Boston’s Fort Point for over 18 years. Stephen is represented locally by the Panopticon gallery, and runs the advanced black and white silver photography major at the New England School of Photography in Boston.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. But, they DO still have incentive to sell your work. The Kiernan Gallery was founded by an emerging artist, and recognizes the importance of selling work; they believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.

This exhibit is aimed to be a celebration of the many definitions of family; how the societal constructs defining family are ever evolving and changing. You know that old saying, “You can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.” They are looking to choose your unchosen!

JUROR: Chris Verene has been photographing three generations of his family, since 1984, in Galesburg, Illinois, a small town in the Midwest. Verene has been called a natural storyteller, focusing on the whole intimate truth of human narratives.

Last year Verene’s work was exhibited at The Tate Modern, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and The Walker Art Center. His new photography book, “Family,” will accompany a traveling solo exhibition throughout the United States in from 2010-2013. Verene lives and works in New York City, and is currently working on stills and a feature documentary motion picture entitled, “The Self-Esteem Salon.”

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. The holy grail of culinary education is the Cordon Blue, and more recently, the Culinary Institutes of America. I attended Johnson & Wales for a year and continue to be grateful for all that I learned. I put me on the path to being the food-lover that I am. And honestly, without the foodie side of me, I’m not sure this blog would have made it. It gave me a brand, a platform if you will, to set AAAD apart from all the art deadlines out there. JUROR: After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

She has exhibited widely including solo shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lishui Festival in China, the Tagomago Gallery in Barcelona and Paris, and the Wallspace Gallery in Seattle and Santa Barbara. In addition, her work is held in a number of museum collections.

Her photographs have been featured in publications including PDN (cover), the PDN Photo Annual, and Silvershotz magazines. In 2012, Aline received the Rising Star Award through the Griffin Museum of Photography for her contributions to the photographic community.

Aline founded and writes the blogzine, Lenscratch, that celebrates a different contemporary photographer each day and offers opportunity for exhibition. Aline has curated and juried exhibitions for a number of galleries, organizations, and on-line magazines. Though she was nominated for The Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 and for The Santa Fe Prize in Photography in 2009 by Center, she considers her children her greatest achievement.

It is partially a gift of the subject itself, how varied the genre of landscape photography can be. Combine the extremes of the land each of us has walked, with the variety of visions each of us chooses to communicate, and we’re bound to witness just how rare our earth can be.

They are looking to see a range of what landscape images can be: macro details to vast panoramas, conceptual narratives, abstractions, document, or relational gestures. They hope to feature varied points of view from every crook and bend, angle and junction, on the globe. With your unique images, Darkroom Gallery will honor the extents of this Rare planet we call Earth.

JUROR: It is no wonder William Neill has developed a deep, spiritual connection with nature, being a resident of the Yosemite National Park area since 1977. His award-winning photography has been widely collected and exhibited in museums and galleries.

His work has been published in several books, and a retrospective collection of his finest landscape photographs was published by Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown & Co, in 1997, entitled Landscapes of the Spirit. Several periodicals have published his images, and Neill writes a monthly column “On Landscape”, for Outdoor Photographer magazine. Neill’s corporate clients include: Sony Japan, Bayer Corporation, Canon USA, Nike, Nikon, The Nature Company, and Sony Music/Classical.

Perhaps most important to the task of jurying Rare Earth, is Neill’s extensive experience in close observation of others’ work – he has been an instructor of photography for 32 years. Mr. Neill is looking forward to the opportunity to see your work, for the purpose of curating what will be an awe-inspiring exhibition of landscape photographs.

As I may have mentioned a few hundred times, we try to be very careful about what we eat. Braising has become my alternative technique for cooking almost anything. A TINY smidgen of olive oil in a non-stick pan allows me to caramelize veggies and meats, then I de-glaze the pan with a little water that helps steam the food to the proper temperature. No frying needed. This next show wants to see you alternative methods. Might have to enter this one myself…

Alternative process photography today is a hybrid of historical techniques and contemporary ideas. Old is new again and the resurgence of non-silver processes has led to The Kiernan Gallery’s second alternative process exhibition.

Whether it is in reaction to digital, or a hybrid process aided by the technology, these techniques remain as evocative as ever, bringing a unique style to present-day ideas. For Methods (Alternative), The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that use any alternative processing technique for any idea you wish to express.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photographic media may include but is not limited to: Albumen, Bromoil, Cyanotype, Daguerreotypes, Gum Bichromate, Platinotypes, Salt Prints, Temeraprints, Tintypes, Wet Plate Collodion. Hybrid or Combination images incorporating conventional (including digital) processes with hand-crafted applications are also eligible. Conventional techniques such as Silver Gelatin, Digital, and C-prints are not eligible.

JURORS: Sam Barzilay is the Creative Director of United Photo Industries, a Brooklyn-based art-presenting cooperative. He is also the co-founder of Photoville, a new pop-up destination that made its debut on the Brooklyn waterfront in the summer of 2012. Prior to launching UPI, Sam was the Director of the New York Photo Festival. In his dual capacity as curator and festival organizer, he has curated photo exhibitions and lectured on current trends in contemporary photography as far afield as China, Greece, and Japan. Over the past few years, Sam has also served as juror, editor, and reviewer for the Prix Pictet, Les Recontres d’Arles, Houston FotoFest, the New York Photo Awards, Artists Wanted, the Google Photography Prize, and the FotoVisura Grant, among others.

Ellen Fleurov is the Executive Director of Silver Eye Center for Photography. The founding curator of photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, Ellen has curated over 85 exhibitions for American and international museums, galleries, and photography festivals. She is a frequent guest lecturer, grants panelist, exhibition juror, and previewer for Houston FotoFest; Photolucida and Critical Mass, Portland, OR; Atlanta Celebrates Photography; Society for Photographic Education; and InVision Festival, among others.

AWARDS:

On top of Mt. LeConte, a few miles away (& above) my house, there is over two feet of snow. It fell in OCTOBER (pictured left). I hiked to Mt. CALL for ENTRIES:
Rare Earth

It is partially a gift of the subject itself, how varied the genre of landscape photography can be. Combine the extremes of the land each of us has walked, with the variety of visions each of us chooses to communicate, and we’re bound to witness just how rare our earth can be.

They are looking to see a range of what landscape images can be: macro details to vast panoramas, conceptual narratives, abstractions, document, or relational gestures. They hope to feature varied points of view from every crook and bend, angle and junction, on the globe. With your unique images, Darkroom Gallery will honor the extents of this Rare planet we call Earth.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR:

It is no wonder William Neill has developed a deep, spiritual connection with nature, being a resident of the Yosemite National Park area since 1977. His award-winning photography has been widely collected and exhibited in museums and galleries.

His work has been published in several books, and a retrospective collection of his finest landscape photographs was published by Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown & Co, in 1997, entitled Landscapes of the Spirit. Several periodicals have published his images, and Neill writes a monthly column “On Landscape”, for Outdoor Photographer magazine. Neill’s corporate clients include: Sony Japan, Bayer Corporation, Canon USA, Nike, Nikon, The Nature Company, and Sony Music/Classical.

Perhaps most important to the task of jurying Rare Earth, is Neill’s extensive experience in close observation of others’ work – he has been an instructor of photography for 32 years. Mr. Neill is looking forward to the opportunity to see your work, for the purpose of curating what will be an awe-inspiring exhibition of landscape photographs.

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the Darkroom Gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 30×48″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work and retain all rights to their photographs. For commission details, go to the bottom of the Submission Rules page!
