I am early for almost nothing.  As I have gotten older, I am far better at being on time, but I still JUST make it most of the time.  As you might imagine, this doesn’t make for great breakfast.  Luckily, my spouse is the king of egg breakfast.  We go through DOZENS of eggs each week.  So the early bird…gets to cook in my house.  This next Call offers benefits for being early.  So, don’t procrastinate…

While ceramics have been used for both practical and aesthetic reasons for thousands of years, the medium has experienced an amazing renaissance among artists in the past decade. Today ceramics are integrated into contemporary art.  Art In Clay II: Figuratively Speaking is about figurative sculpture in clay representing a range of work from representational to abstract, traditional to experimental.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all U.S. artists 18 years+

MEDIA: Open to clay work.  The artwork cannot be functional –production work and commercially manufactured pieces are not acceptable.  Mixed media is acceptable as long as clay is the dominant component of the piece (at least 75%).

JUROR:  Lilly Wei is a NY-based art critic, writer & independent curator whose focus is contemporary art. Wei has an MA in art history from Columbia University, NY.  Wei contributes to many publications in the US & internationally and has written for Art in America since 1984.  She is a contributing editor at ARTnews & has written numerous articles, reviews, interviews, essays and monographs on contemporary and modern artists.

AWARDS: Gold $500, Silver $250, Bronze $100 & five Certificates of Merit

INGREDIENTS

My true goal with food is the same with art: to see you be brave.  But being brave has to be based on knowledge, not whim.  This is true of both food AND art.  I would never have you enter a show without doing at least some preliminary research into the venue, gallery, organization or publication.  So I want to encourage you never to let a food enter your mouth without a little preliminary research into ingredients or origin.  Do me a favor, if I can’t get you to quit eating food with labels, at least read the label.  There are scary things hidden in lots of foods. My kid loves quiche.  He requests it for every special occasion–from birthdays to graduations.  The secret is 6 eggs to 2 cups of heavy whipping cream for a deep dish, and don’t talk to me about the fat.  Really.  He rarely cares what’s in it, but when I’m looking for brownie points, I throw in bacon and/or pepperoni.  I do it for the look on his face.  How strange it is to see him look lovingly at a brunch food.  This next Call is looking for your strange figurations–and not just the faces.  Take a look…

SlowArt Productions presents the thematic exhibition: Strange Figurations. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery from September 11 – October 4, 2014.

ELIGIBILITY:
All artists 18+

MEDIA: Open to all interpretations of Strange Figurations. Including surreal, visionary & extraordinary figurative art.

DEADLINE: June 30, 2014

NOTIFICATION: No later than July 30, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to 4, $5 ea add’l. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, September 11 – October 4, 2014. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #22, Fall 2015 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display.
