Learn more from the Haggus Society!CORNY
construction

I cannot escape corn. It is in everything from maltodextrin to corn syrup; you can’t escape.  And since 80-90% of that corn is genetically modified, I’m not thrilled.  While remodeling a room recently, we were cutting luan (a type of plywood) for a wall application, and what did I smell?  Burnt corn.  I would bet large sums of money that the glue that holds those layers of veneer together is made with corn.  Okay, I’ll stop bitching about corn now.  Need to bitch about something?  This next show is your perfect opportunity.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for the B*tchfest from The Haggus Society (Los Angeles, CA). $12.50  entry for up to 10 images & 20% commission can’t be beat.  Show some love for B*tchfest, PLEASE…

From the atrocities of various (and perpetual) war zones, to the workplace, courtrooms, behind closed doors, and even congress, women aren’t treated with or given the dignity and equanimity they deserve.

BAKED GOODS

I have produced my fair share of leaded pastries–from puck-like biscuits to unintentionally unleavened breads.  I thought it was just me, but I found out that part of the problem was my oven.  if your baking powder doesn’t full work until 425°, and your oven lacks the last 50º because it isn’t calibrated correctly, then you’re going to fail. It doesn’t matter if your oven is 25 years or 5 days old; a digital oven thermometer can save your baking. Trust me.  This next Call offers a little more digital magic.  Take a look…

AMBER WAVES

Wheat is in EVERYTHING.  Even marshmallows are often off-limits because of a common form of flour-coating to prevent clumping.  Even if I weren’t allergic to wheat, why would I want it in everything?  It is in all of your soups, your nacho cheese and even in your caramel-colored roast beef.  It really pisses me off.  Just saying.  This next Call wants to know what YOU have to bitch about.  Take a look…

CUT YOU

I used to be the queen of the hand cut garnish and/or decorative knife skills.  I think tournée-cut potatoes simply taste better; I do.  But, my recent cooking laziness has forced me to return to a more fresh-cut approach, like carambola (star fruit).  I’ve looked at them decoratively for so many years, I’d forgotten how delicious they really are.  I have not forgotten how delicious the magazine hosting this next Call is however.  I’m thrilled to have them as a sponsor, and I wash bowled over when I received my last hard copy.  Simply beautiful (and tasty)

JUNK

I write a whole lot of crap about food.  Most of it is just an off the cuff note about whatever is going on in my kitchen. But it is NEVER meant as a judgment about the way YOU eat. One of FB friends updated her status yesterday with a comment about how people who eat cheese, fruit and veggies cold, as opposed to room temp, have clearly given up on life and are just eating garbage.  Really?  I am sorry my cold strawberry has flagged me as a useless garbage eater.  So, I want to be clear.  No judgement from me.  Do I want you to eat creme-filled snack cakes? No.  Do I love you any less for it?  No, I’m just a little jealous.  This next Call is an for an all hung exhibit.  No judgement there either…

Check out this Call for Entries from Art via Post for a Mail Art exhibit, book and website.  There is no entry fee, and it is all hung.  If mail art doesn’t excite you, think of it as a way to work through your artist block.  Don’t miss this chance to participate…
