The featured food at my house this week is Jona Gold apples ($.89/lb). Last month is was asparagus ($1.99/lb).  This whole month it has been apples, partly because of our proximity to an orchard, and partly due to price.  We’re heading toward Winter, and I’ll be eating $1 butternut squash for at least 2 months. It is all about eating what’s in season. It is cheaper, healthier, and yummier. Think of it as a seasonal treat.  This next Call is all about the upcoming season, and it’s a treat too!  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for 2013 Exhibitions from Flow Art Space (Minneapolis, MN). Great news…NO COMMISSION, no really.  This is a rare opportunity in a fairly new gallery. The deadline is just around the corner…

Let’s talk about frozen corn.  I have heard all the arguments about frozen vegetable being the next best thing to fresh.  But what I want to know, is WHY would any restaurant serve frozen corn on the cob during the time when in-season fresh corn is cheaper than frozen?  Are we really too lazy to shuck corn, folks?  Really?  Please don’t be too lazy to enter this show from a state that knows a lot about corn.  Take a look…

I collect food-specific dishes.  Weird, I know.  I have ceramic turtles for wasabi, three-legged lava rock bowls for salsa, futuristic pods for olives, individual berry bowls, and there will be more.  (Maybe these egg cups).  Always the proper tool for the job, you could say.  This next Call is really ALL about the collectors.  See if this one is right for you…

Here’s an interesting Call for Entries from the Sylvia White Gallery in Ventura, California for the 2013 Collectors’ Choice.  I am intrigued, this is a great opportunity for a few of you, but the challenge is in figuring out if YOUR work is something this anonymous group of collectors want.  Investigate for your self…

Chocolate

Shockingly, there are many things I love more than food.  My family, art, and friendships that survive through time and distance.  One of those friendships for me is with one Bernadette Vielbig, sculptor.  She’s a talented artist and a nut of the first order.  I’ve never known her to not challenge an art boundary.  She’s my art/girl crush.  I might just love her more than chocolate, maybe.  Here’s your chance to love her too...from a distance, stalkers.

Check out this Call for Participants in Armchair Travel with Bernadette by Bernadette Vielbig.  Participating will cost you at least $1, but I’ll make it worth your while.  Investigate…

“In spring of 2012 I will be traveling to Amsterdam, Berlin & Prague for work related research.  The research I am doing for my day job is already funded – travel, accommodations, transfers –  I have decided to take advantage of my research time there to expand it to my gallery practice.  You may pledge to ‘Armchair Travel with Bernadette’ to anywhere in these three cities.  I will need you to send me a digital file minimum 100dpi – 8 x 10 jpg headshot that I will print & bring with me and photograph in your destination of choice.  After I return I will edit and print copies of our adventure together to be displayed in November at the Saranac Art Projects gallery, an artist run coop located in Spokane, WA.

Learn more about Armchair Travels with Bernadette! The exhibit will consist of the patron lists, thank you letters, travel shots of us together and an ‘Armchair Installation’ where gallery visitors can relax and read about your pledges, travel books, peruse my travel sketchbooks, and photograph themselves with a ‘flat me’ to be printed & posted daily during the run of the exhibition.  Most of the travel photos will be  renegade actions.   Any funds received through Kickstarter will go towards, paper, inks, framing, installation expenses,  press mailers, fees, & transportation to and from the gallery site of the work.” –Bernadette Vielbig

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all

DEADLINE:  Ongoing through March 25, 2012 @ 3am ET.

Anyone who pledges $2 gets a free entry into the $2 Art Contest.  Any artist who pledges $25+ USD will get a 135px × 100px ad (designed by me) and linked to their website for 6 months.  Any artist who pledges $50+USD will get a 275px × 100px ad (designed by me) and linked to their website for 6 months.   Deal?  Deal.

I understand that the taste of food is subjective.  It is all opinion. It is about your viewpoint.  I love the spicy, pungent flavors of Indian food, but I don’t care about the milder flavors of sushi or grilled chicken one way or the other.  But then again, I love the subtlety of almonds and don’t care for the pistachio’s “pow.”  Go figure.  This next Call wants to see it from YOUR viewpoint.  Take a look…

I love Cuban food.  The first time I ate Cuban food was in a strip mall in Goose Creek, SC just outside Charleston …no kidding.  With a strong military influence in the area before the shut down of the military base and the naval yard, international influence on food was pretty common.  The best Cuban food I ever tasted was in Miami and is responsible for my love affair with plaintains.  This next Call offers you an opportunity to sample some of the best food in the world during your time at this opening…

CALL for ENTRIES: Scroll Bowl V

I’m told the Super Bowl is in January.  I say, “I’m told” because a football would have to hit me square between the eyes to make me aware of when the season begins or ends for any sport.  Yep, I’m just not that girl.  Interestingly enough, the idea of the Super Bowl does conjure image of very specific foods for me despite the fact that I’ve never been to a Super Bowl party.  Hmmmm… Chicken Wings anyone?

This next Call for Entries is for the Scroll Bowl V sponsored by Magazine 22.  The only similarity between this Call for the Scroll Bowl V and the Super Bowl?  They are both in January and both have Bowl in the name, but I had to start somewhere, eh? *Editor’s note:  4 hours after this post went live, the venue and date changed.  See edits below noted in green italics…

CALL for ENTRIES:  Scroll Bowl V

Submit to Scroll Bowl V today!

SCROLL BOWL V will be the featured event at The 22 Magazine Launch Party, on April 2nd, 2011.  Harnessing the ancient power of scroll storytelling, some of world’s finest creators gather to show off their work on large and small rolls of parchment.  Scroll art is one of the oldest forms of storytelling, and the folks at The 22 Magazine want to make the experience of viewing a scroll more accessible to everyday life.

Check out the Scrollie Viewer on YouTube!MEDIA:  There are many different ways to approach art on scrolls, and they ask artists to push those limits-linear storytelling to abstract ideas.

Larger format works are shown on their huge SCROLLIE VIEWER, but they also appreciate smaller format or long scrolls that hang on the wall.  Solo, group collaborations, video or performance pieces are acceptable.  How each artist attacks the “page” is what makes these events fun.

WHERE:  The Scroll Bowl V will take place at Frost Street Art Space in Williamsburg (Brooklyn), an exciting new gallery and screening venue that provides live online streaming of events!  Click here for videos of the space.

From the organizers:  “What this [change of venue] means for the artists is 1) A week long show instead of one night  2) documentation of the actual event via 4-7 installed cameras  3) live streaming of the event online and  4) more space and much nicer venue. ”

Submit to Scroll Bowl V today!HOW TO SUBMIT:  All submissions (in the form of images or links) can be sent to the22magazine@gmail.com. Please put “SCROLL BOWL SUBMISSION” in the subject line.

DEADLINE:  December 30, 2010 or until the show is full.  New deadline March 16, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY:  Artists in any location are welcome to submit.  Although they cannot fund anyone’s travel expenses,  the folks at The 22 Magazine will be happy to present your scroll for you if you cannot make it to the event.
