not crazy

I am a culinary cheapskate, of sorts.  I try to limit the cost of a home-cooked meal’s protein to $2 to $4–total, not per pound.  It comes from years of having no choice; however, I have these budgetary restriction to partially thank for my culinary creativity.  You try having chicken, turkey, eggs or pork 4 days in a row; it will make you creative too.  Now I will still buy a lux bottle of vinegar for $15, but I have priorities, ha. This next call is for the LUX Center, but it isn’t necessarily the theme.  Take a look…

The spirit of culinary improvisation is alive and well at my house.  Exact ingredients are unheard of, and trips to the grocery store are always necessary.  Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and red wine vinegar instead of rice wine vinegar will do in a pinch.  We’ll see how the enchiladas turn out tonight, ha.  This next Call is for a show located in the heart of improvisation, and I love the theme too.  Take a look…

The Surrealist Influence
on Contemporary Photography

Learn more about The Surrealist Influence show in Austin at The Hideout Theatre!“Surrealism started out as a philosophical movement in the 1920s.  The Manifesto, written by André Breton laid out the goals of the surrealist group which was comprised of writers, philosophers and artists.  Freud was a huge influence on the movement with his practice of interpreting the meaning of dreams.  That idea played out visually amongst the group which left us with rich visual oddities from artists such as Dali, Magritte, Ernst, Miro and Man Ray.

“I feel the surrealist artists impacted my own methods of creating, and encouraged me to look within to find a deeper significance with my art.  Now  I am looking for other photographers who have followed a similar path and others who have felt a kindred connection to the surrealist artists or movement.” –Lanie McCormick, Curator

Dragées remind me of Las Vegas. We all have a responsibility to know how our food ends up on our plates.  I’ve seen the slaughter videos (horrifying BTW), and I still eat beef.  I have witnessed a chicken lose his head (disturbing), and I still eat chicken.  But I have to say, I’m not cooking live lobster or crab.  My husband is allergic to shellfish, so it doesn’t come up all that often, but I’m not going to fight my food.  Lobsters and crab have a documented history of fighting the cooking process.  Not this girl.  Thanks, but no.  This next Call is looking for your brand of rebellion.  Lobsters and crabs are not eligible to apply…

CALL for ENTRIES: The Art of Rebellion

Learn more about the Gowanus Print Lab in Brooklyn NY!2011 has been a year of rebellion.  This year has seen long-standing monarchs overthrown in Egypt and Libya and mass protests for calling change in the economic-political power structure in Europe and the United States, most notably in Occupy Wall Street.

Dissent at this level has not been seen since the late 1960’s, where protesters developed both nonviolent and more radical protest techniques that are still used in today’s struggles.

Young people in particular are standing up and using their voice, and in times of social turmoil and political upheaval art can be used as a powerful and emotional communicative tool.
