Remember having “eyes bigger than your stomach”? That was the automatic response to an overly large-portioned plate at my childhood dinner table. It was then immediately followed by a lecture reminding me of children thought to be starving in a far away country that seemed, well, other worldly to a five year old. The truth would have been more effective. There were starving children in my own country, my own state, my own town, probably my own neighborhood. I was fortunate not to want for food as a child. But today, my eyes are always bigger than my stomach. I always take on more than I can easily digest, gastronomically and otherwise, and yet I always find myself both hungry to pile on more–even while suffering the indigestion of my last turn at the proverbial table. Here at AAAD, we believed that the food metaphor is a perfect vehicle to inspire you to feed your creative self. We shun the demeaning cutesy-ness of the bohemian “starving artist” image as it numbs us to the real struggle of hunger & starvation worldwide. Starvation, in a literal way, robs humanity of being human and ends even the possibility of a creative self. For SMALL PLATES, AAAD wants your views on hunger —physical, spiritual, political, emotional and/or creative. Food references are optional.

The SMALL PLATES will be exhibit will both open & close on May 6, 2016 as a part of the First Friday festivities at The Balcony Gallery, located in The Emporium Center in Knoxville, TN –a one-day show.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists —any age, any gender, any location.

THEME: Hunger—physical, spiritual, political, emotional or creative. Food reference optional.

MEDIA: Open to all media that will fit in a 9”x12” envelope (aka 229 mm x 305 mm or No. 10 ½), including but not limited to: painting, drawing, fiber, collage, digital, photography, graphic design, illustration, pen and ink, printmaking, etc.

DEADLINE: April 18, 2016

NOTIFICATION: Ongoing by April 19, 2016

ENTRY FEE: $5 for up to 5. Entry fee waived for members in good standing of The Haggus Society.

CURATOR: R.L. Gibson (yours truly), a working artist, also serves as the editor of artandartdeadlines.com (AAAD). Trained in classical, French culinary techniques, Gibson created AAAD as a food-themed resource to motivate artists to create their own community, standards & artistic opportunities. In addition to producing her own solo & collaborative art, Gibson has served as a gallerist, juror, teacher & arts administrator for nearly two decades.

AWARDS: To assist resume building, designations of Best of Show, 1st, 2nd & 3rd Place will be awarded; however, cash prizes will NOT be awarded. Award designations will be chosen from the physical work and will be judged based on artistic merit and interpretation of the theme. If not chosen for the gallery exhibit, please note that at the curator’s discretion, ONE image from EVERY artist will go into the online exhibit* with a link to the artist’s website. *Editor’s note: So if you follow all the rules, you can at the very least add the online exhibit to your resume, even if you are not selected for the physical exhibit.

SALES: All work will be considered for sale unless marked NFS. A commission of 30% will be taken on all sales. Please note, 20% commission on cash/check sales and 25% commission on credit card sales is held by Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville. The additional 5-10% commission is retained by AAAD. Unsold artwork will be returned and payment for sold artwork will be made within 30 days of the close of the exhibit.

MREs now have a strong secondary market–doomsday preppers. I don’t think that most people relish the idea of eating pre-packaged, processed military rations. They have improved great (or so I’ve been told); pizza is even on the horizon. However, I would think that preserving seeds, building hydroponic systems and farming fish would be better long-term solutions than MREs. SALES: By participating in this project, artists are donating their work to AFSC to use in the traveling exhibit, in digital replicas of the work available for download for free. Work will be fully credited to the artists, with contact information included.

I tried one many years ago and remember the flavors of lemon, banana and cucumber, but because they are exceedingly rare, I can’t find one locally. 3×3 Magazine is entering its ninth year judging the world’s best contemporary illustration judged by some of the world’s top art directors, designers and illustrators.

Unlike many shows they have no boundaries, their entrants come from every part of the globe. They are still one of the best values around when it comes to entry fees and publication fees. And they continue to improve their entry process.

And unlike most show annuals that are on the bookshelves 3×3 Magazine’s annuals are prominently displayed on the newsstands in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and parts of Asia where they are affordable to art directors and art buyers who may or may not be interested in illustration. There has been dramatic growth in the number of outlets stocking the 3×3 Magazine annual and the sales to art directors.

It is their mission to demonstrate the benefits of using illustration, this annual is their showcase.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all illustrators, art directors, graphic designers, editors, publishers in all countries for commissioned and non-commissioned work produced and/or published during the calendar year 2013.

DEADLINE: March 31, 2014

ENTRY FEE: Single entries are $35 and Series (3–5 images only) are $60. They accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express. Publication fees are $90 which help cover the high cost of printing and distributing the annual and development of the app. Honorable mentions, $50.

JUDGES: Marieke Griffioen, Design Director, Edenspiekermann, Amsterdam; Paul Gonzales, Deputy Design Director, Los Angeles Times; Tim J. Luddy, former Design Director, Mother Jones and illustrators Klaas Verplancke, Belgium & Mark Smith, United Kingdom.

Embracing Our Differences invites artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students to participate in its annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity.

The Embracing Our Differences exhibit will be displayed throughout the months of April and May 2013 at Island Park along Sarasota’s beautiful bay front.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. National and international submissions are encouraged.

DEADLINE:
January 6th, 2014

NOTIFICATION:
Winning selections
will be announced online at embracingourdifferences.org by mid-March, 2014.

ENTRY FEE: None.

45 artists will be selected for the exhibit.

Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 850,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 39 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks. At the judges’ discretion, an additional 6 “honorable mentions” may be selected.

SELECTION PROCESS: Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “Embracing Our Differences.”

The art-work will also be evaluated on how it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size – 16′ wide by 12.5′ high.

Artists are encouraged to use
bold saturated colors and strong lines.

Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals.

They came up with an awesome idea – a set of six glasses uncannily shaped like beer cans – but they’re looking for an artist to create a catchy design. NOTIFICATION: The judges will then select one Grand Prize Winner who will be notified by September 18, 2013.

ENTRY FEE: It seems there is no fee.

JURY PROCESS: UncommonGoods (Letterpress design team, 1Canoe2, and UncommonGoods Product Development Associate, Tiffany Jyang) will select a number of entries to move on to the semifinal round based on skill, style, and originality. On September 4, semifinalists will be added to the Community Voting App where UncommonGoods’ community will vote for their favorite entries and leave comments and feedback. (UncommonGoods’ team will acknowledge positive votes only; negative votes will not be considered.)

AWARDS: $500 + 5% royalties. At the end of the voting period, UncommonGoods will present the 5 entries with the highest positive votes to a panel of judges. The winning entry will also be announced through UncommonGoods media channels.
