I have a secret love for rapini. You may know it as broccoli raab or broccoletti. People assume it is just fancy broccoli and often cook it that way, hence the reason I hide my love of it (until now). Rapini is more closely related to a turnip than broccoli with the same tendency toward bitterness or stringy-ness if under cooked or overcooked. Don’t ever buy, cook or serve rapini that isn’t a gorgeous shade of green. (You won’t enjoy the yellow, trust me.) Don’t under cook it or spare the garlic & olive oil. It is all a matter of taste, right? I know that for every food there is someone who believes its tastes better than all other foods, but I still can’t quite resolve myself to the notion that some foods aren’t just objectively bad. Warhol is famous for, among other things, depictions of a soup. That same soup is the foundation for thousands of green bean casserole recipes. SOMEone believes it to be “Mmm mmm good”, but I am not one of the some. I don’t have a lot of food limits, aside from Century eggs and boiled okra, but just no. I believe the concept of “edible” is abstract, not just subjective. Technically, anything that doesn’t kill you is edible. Well, really, you can still eat things that WILL kill you. So, I suppose if you are physically able to consume something, it is edible. So, maybe the notion of “eatability” is the abstract one. Why would someone pay a fortune to eat a fertilized duck egg? Because they are yummy? Doubtful. But, the precedent for eating eggs and eating ducks has been set, so I understand why it would occur to someone to try. But coconut?
