My grandmother loved fairy food.  She would boil sugar and vinegar together for what felt like forever (15 minutes) and then add baking soda at the last minute.  Magically, it seemed, the concoction would turn almost orange.  Once cooled, it had this beautifully buttery flavor.  Sugar + vinegar = fairy food.  Try it.  In the meantime, this next Call is all about the fairies.  Maybe a fairy kitchen?  This one is creative fun…

JUROR:  All submissions are eligible for the “People’s Choice Award,” which will be voted on by guests throughout the summer.

She currently sits on the boards of the environmental organization the Reuse Alliance and the arts organization Pentacle.

Coconut fiber, banana silk & pineapple leather are being used to create the latest and most fashionable textiles.  So, if Gaga’s meat dress isn’t your groove, try banana silk.  The next Call wants the wearable version of your art–from clothing to jewelry, but it doesn’t have to be edible. I’m such a fan of found-object assemblage, trash art & recycled materials.  I understand the debate over archival materials, and I embrace a movement toward outdoor ephemeral sculpture in parks and outside museums & universities.  However, I do often find my self frustrated when an artist chooses to use a recycled materia regardless of of whether it really works.  I don’t like the gimmick of it all.  But the sculptural work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Dimosthenis Prodromou finds itself at one with newsprint.  If feels like a natural progression of the paper’s lifecycle.  It appears both solid, but soft & light.   A ready-made pallet…

ARTIST of the DAY: Emily Shane

In a Walmart world where most everything can be had for $10 or less, how do we avoid reinforcing a culture that regards everything is disposable?  How do we discourage casual consumerism and reinforce long-term responsibility of ownership?  Value.  Buy what you LOVE.   Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Emily Shane upcycles much-loved cast-offs of days past.   I LOVE the texture AND how illustrative this work is of falling down the reading “rabbit hole”. I live amongst the big trees, copious wildlife and dizzying views of the Great Smoky Mountains.  Nature HERE seems rough and rugged and and indomitable. It is easy to forget the delicate wonder and our responsibility to protect it.  Nothing could be clearer in the work of Anne ten Donkelaar, today’s Artist of the Day. (continues below)

“Weeds become poetry, each unique twig gets attention,
nature seems to float.” 

“A damaged butterfly, a broken twig, a bumblebee, some strangely grown weeds: I find all these unique discoveries in my path and then take them home to my studio. Here, I take my time to explore the objects and try to work out how I can show each one to it’s best advantage. My finds inspire me. Upcycling is close to my heart.  As with many, my obsession with the reuse of discarded objects resulted from the collecting of “art supplies”.  Consider the previous quotes as air quotes from my bemused husband.  Collecting fueled my love for upcycling AND assemblage.  Today’s Artist of the Day, Freya Jobbins has such a smart sense of irony & humor.  This work is a delightful comment on consumerism and the untouchable nature of the creative object. I love technology; I do. 

Technology is what allows AAAD to offer free resources to artists.  But I have days when I look around the restaurant or library (or my own livingroom) and I wonder at the blue glow of electronic devices on nearly every face in the room.  Is this where & what we want to be?  Have we weighed the positives & negatives of the constant immersion? Today’s Artist of the Day , Maurice Mbikayi, has given us his perspective in a series of works that are definitely worth investigating. (continues below)
